Application of a systemic herpes simplex virus type 1 infection in the rat as a tool for sunscreen photoimmunoprotection studies.

The application of a novel model for sunscreen photoimmunoprotection studies was assessed using a systemic infection of rats with herpes simplex virus type 1 (HSV-1). Rats were irradiated daily with 1 minimal erythemal/oedematous dose of UVB for 7 consecutive days on their shaved backs with or without application of a broad-spectrum sunscreen (containing TiO2) with a sun protection factor of 10. Subsequently, rats were infected intranasally with HSV. UV exposure prior to HSV infection induced increased severity and incidence of clinical signs of disease, suppression of cellular immune response

Topical Sunscreens: A Narrative Review for Contact Sensitivity, Potential Allergens, Clinical Evaluation, and Management for their Optimal Use in Clinical Practice.

Topical sunscreens decrease the quantity of ultraviolet (UV) light from the sun reaching the skin by either blocking or scattering it and help protect the skin from dyspigmentation, photoaging, DNA damage, and photocarcinogenesis, especially in photosensitive individuals. The significant role played by visible light and infrared light in skin pigmentation and photoaging has been recognized in recent years. The majority of broad-spectrum sunscreens protect against UV-B (290-320nm) and UV-A (320-400nm) radiation. Allergic reactions to sunscreens were relatively uncommon compared to their widespr

Sunscreen allergy and its investigation.

Allergic reactions to sunscreens are relatively rare. However, as the public become more conscious of the dangers of excessive sunlight exposure, the use of sunscreens is increasing. They are also being incorporated into general cosmetics on a more frequent basis. Sunscreens contain a variety of potential sensitizers which may lead to contact and/or photocontact allergic dermatitis, and as pharmaceutical companies continue to manufacture and incorporate new UV filters it is crucial that we remain up to date and aware of these agents to include in patch and photopatch testing batteries. Further

Methoxy substitution in the α-carbon of lignin side-chain inhibits its condensation for light-colored lignin extraction.

Lignin is a natural macromolecular within woody plant. Its integrally isolation is a challenging because the conventional preparation causes its dark brown. Herein, we reported a method for extracting light-colored lignin using a mixed solvent of 1,4-dioxane and methanol in acidic conditions, achieved by introducing methoxy groups onto the α‑carbon of lignin side chains via nucleophilic substitution. The reaction declined the condensed structures of the extracted lignin so that the color of the product was light-yellow in the whiteness index of 68.2 (CIELAB color parameters L*, a* and b* value

Contact allergy to topical corticosteroids and sunscreens.

Topical corticosteroids and sunscreens are extensively used formulations, both as over-the-counter products and as prescription medicines. Topical corticosteroids are increasingly being recognized as causes of allergic contact dermatitis. Because of their anti-inflammatory property, contact allergy to these agents may be difficult to suspect and prove. With corticosteroid allergy, there are special issues in patch testing that need to be considered: Screening tests need to be done with budesonide and tixocortol pivalate, and delayed readings are essential to pick up all positive cases. Prevent

Photoallergic contact dermatitis. Results of photopatch testing in New York, 1985 to 1990.

BACKGROUND: Over a 6-year period, 187 patients with a history of photosensitivity were photopatch tested using standard techniques. Seventy-six patients were male and 111 were female. Most patients were white (151 patients). Two thirds of the patients were between the ages of 31 and 60 years. OBSERVATION: Testing revealed a total of 63 positive reactions: 14 plain contact, 41 photocontact, and eight combined contact and photocontact in 37 (20%) patients. Careful history taking resulted in a diagnosis of clinically relevant photoallergic contact dermatitis in 54% of these 37 patients or 11% (2

Antimalarials.

The antimalarials, chloroquine, hydroxychloroquine, and quinacrine, are used primarily for malaria; but they can be beneficial for cutaneous lupus erythematosus (LE), polymorphous light eruption, solar urticaria, and porphyria cutanea tarda. Antimalarials bind to deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA) which prevents DNA and ribonucleic acid (RNA) polymerase reactions and DNA heat inactivation; and they inhibit the LE cell phenomenon, antinuclear antibody reactions, and suppress lymphocyte transformation. By competing with calcium ion, they stabilize membranes and have an anesthetic effect. Their anti-inf

Influence of the absorption behavior of sunscreens in the short-wavelength UV range (UVB) and the long-wavelength UV range (UVA) on the relation of the UVB absorption to sun protection factor.

The absorption of filter substances in sunscreens, reducing the incident ultraviolet (UV) radiation, is the basis for the protecting ability of such formulations. The erythema-correlated sun protection factor (SPF), depending mainly on the intensity of the UVB radiation, is the common value to quantify the efficacy of the formulations avoiding sunburn. An ex vivo method combining tape stripping and optical spectroscopy is applied to measure the absorption of sunscreens in the entire UV spectral range. The obtained relations between the short-wavelength UV (UVB) absorption and the SPF confirm a

Photocontact allergy to oxybenzone: ten years of experience.

Intolerance of sunscreen agents has often been reported in the literature. This mainly comprises photosensitization to sunscreens such as oxybenzone. The aims of this study were to establish the incidence of photocontact allergy to oxybenzone and its relationship with the use of other cosmetics. From 1982 to 1992 we performed photopatch tests on 283 patients with suspected photodermatosis. Forty-six patients (16%) had positive reactions: 61 positive photopatch tests and 9 positive patch tests. Photocontact allergy to sunscreens was divided into 2 main groups: 35 cases to oxybenzone and 17 case

Measurements of the protective effect of topically applied sunscreens using in vitro three-dimensional dermal and skin equivalents.

For preventing or minimizing acute and chronic skin damage caused by UV radiation, the use of sunscreens is probably the most important measure. To screen the protective efficacy of new sunscreen molecules or formulations against UV rays, we evaluated as in vitro testing methods the use of two three-dimensional models, a dermal equivalent (DE) and a skin equivalent (SE). The DE is composed of a porous collagen-glycosaminoglycans-chitosan matrix populated by normal human fibroblasts. The SE is comprised of a fully differentiated epidermis realized by seeding keratinocytes onto the DE. In this s

Photoprotection: a review of the current and future technologies.

Exposure to ultraviolet (UV) radiation is associated with a variety of harmful effects ranging from photoaging to skin cancer. UVB (290 to 320 nm) directly damages the cellular DNA leading to the formation of the 6-4 cyclobutane pyrimidine dimmers, and UVA (320 to 400 nm) indirectly damages the DNA via the production of oxygen radical species. In this review, we focused on the technological and scientific aspects of photoprotection using sunglasses and clothing while attempting to dispel some of the misconceptions. In addition to the basic knowledge relating to sunscreens, we reviewed the curr

The effects of UV filters on health and the environment.

Sunscreens are an important means of protection against sunburns, dyspigmentation, photoaging, and photocarcinogenesis. Sunscreens come in a variety of formulations that can protect against ultraviolet B (UVB) radiation, both UVB and ultraviolet A (UVA) radiation (broad-spectrum sunscreens), and UVB, UVA, and visible light (tinted broad-spectrum sunscreens). In the USA, there is currently a paucity of FDA-approved broad-spectrum filters on the market. Studies have identified the presence of multiple UV filters in water sources globally. Many laboratory studies have implicated the potential imp

Non-sunscreen photoprotection: antioxidants add value to a sunscreen.

The association between ultraviolet radiation (UVR) exposure and both skin cancer and photo-aging is well documented. In addition to the conventional organic-chemical and physical-mineral type sunscreens, other non-sunscreen protective strategies have been developed. These include topically applied botanical extracts and other antioxidants as well as topical DNA repair enzymes. Standard terms of photoprotection such as sun protection factor (SPF) do not accurately reflect the photoprotection benefits of these materials. For example, in spite of minimal SPF, tea extract containing polyphenols s

Clinical study of Asian skin changes after application of a sunscreen formulation containing grape seed extract.

BACKGROUND: Asian skin undergoing chronological aging, accumulates signs of photoaging mediated by prolonged exposure to ultraviolet (UV) radiation. Although sunscreens are effective in preventing signs of photoaging, polyphenol-rich extracts, for example, grape seed extract (GSE) can provide additional protection through the broad spectrum of biological activities. AIMS: To access the effectiveness of a sunscreen formulation containing GSE as an important cosmetic ingredient for the improvement of age-related changes in Asian skin using noninvasive evaluation techniques. METHODS: Noninvasiv
