Predicting bacteraemia in maternity patients using full blood count parameters: A supervised machine learning algorithm approach.

INTRODUCTION: Bacteraemia in pregnancy and the post-partum period can lead to maternal and newborn morbidly. The purpose of this study was to use machine learning tools to identify if bacteraemia in pregnant or post-partum women could be predicted by full blood count (FBC) parameters other than the white cell count. METHODS: The study was performed on 129 women with a positive blood culture (BC) for a clinically significant organism, who had a FBC taken at the same time. They were matched with controls who had a negative BC taken at the same time as a FBC. The data were split in to a training

Screening and classification of anti-angiogenic VEGFR2 inhibitors with supervised machine learning, deep learning and molecular docking and molecular dynamics simulation.

Vascular Endothelial Growth Factor Receptor 2 (VEGFR2) is a critical therapeutic target in cancer due to its role in pathological angiogenesis and tumor progression. Despite available FDA-approved VEGFR2 tyrosine kinase inhibitors (TKIs), challenges like resistance, off-target toxicities, and low discovery success rates persist, necessitating more efficient and scalable approaches to identify novel inhibitors. We trained five machine learning (ML) and two deep learning (DL) models on a dataset of 17,750 compounds derived from three public databases (e.g., PubChem, ChEMBL, and BindingDB). The b

Inflammatory subgroups of schizophrenia and their association with brain structure: A semi-supervised machine learning examination of heterogeneity.

OBJECTIVE: Immune system dysfunction is hypothesised to contribute to structural brain changes through aberrant synaptic pruning in schizophrenia. However, evidence is mixed and there is a lack of evidence of inflammation and its effect on grey matter volume (GMV) in patients. We hypothesised that inflammatory subgroups can be identified and that the subgroups will show distinct neuroanatomical and neurocognitive profiles. METHODS: The total sample consisted of 1067 participants (chronic patients with schizophrenia n = 467 and healthy controls (HCs) n = 600) from the Australia Schizophrenia R

Supervised and unsupervised machine learning for automated scoring of sleep-wake and cataplexy in a mouse model of narcolepsy.

Despite commercial availability of software to facilitate sleep-wake scoring of electroencephalography (EEG) and electromyography (EMG) in animals, automated scoring of rodent models of abnormal sleep, such as narcolepsy with cataplexy, has remained elusive. We optimize two machine-learning approaches, supervised and unsupervised, for automated scoring of behavioral states in orexin/ataxin-3 transgenic mice, a validated model of narcolepsy type 1, and additionally test them on wild-type mice. The supervised learning approach uses previously labeled data to facilitate training of a classifier f

A supervised machine learning-based methodology for analyzing dysregulation in splicing machinery: An application in cancer diagnosis.

Deregulated splicing machinery components have shown to be associated with the development of several types of cancer and, therefore, the determination of such alterations can help the development of tumor-specific molecular targets for early prognosis and therapy. Determining such splicing components, however, is not a straightforward task mainly due to the heterogeneity of tumors, the variability across samples, and the fat-short characteristic of genomic datasets. In this work, a supervised machine learning-based methodology is proposed, allowing the determination of subsets of relevant spl

A pilot study for investigating the feasibility of supervised machine learning approaches for the classification of pedestrians struck by vehicles.

This research focuses on the application of Artificial Intelligence (AI) methodologies to the problem of classifying vehicles involved in lethal pedestrian collisions. Specifically, the vehicle type is predicted on the basis of traumatic injury suffered by casualties, exploiting machine learning algorithms. In the present study, AI-assisted diagnosis was shown to have correct prediction about 70% of the time. In pedestrians struck by trucks, more severe injuries were appreciated in the facial skeleton, lungs, major airways, liver, and spleen as well as in the sternum/clavicle/rib complex, wher

The Neuroimmune and Neurotoxic Fingerprint of Major Neurocognitive Psychosis or Deficit Schizophrenia: a Supervised Machine Learning Study.

No studies have examined the immune fingerprint of major neurocognitive psychosis (MNP) or deficit schizophrenia using M1 macrophage cytokines in combination with chemokines such as CCL2 and CCL11. The present study delineated the neuroimmune fingerprint of MNP by analyzing plasma levels of IL-1β, sIL-1RA, TNFα, sTNFR1, sTNFR2, CCL2, and CCL11 in 120 MNP versus 54 healthy controls in association with neurocognitive scores (as assessed with the Brief Assessment of Cognition in Schizophrenia) and PHEMN (psychotic, hostility, excitation, mannerism and negative) symptoms. MNP was best predicted by

Automated Cryo-EM and Supervised Machine Learning Enable Reproducible Characterization of Extracellular Vesicles and Co-Isolating Particles.

Cryo-electron microscopy (cryo-EM) is the only technique capable of visualizing the lipid bilayer of extracellular vesicles (EVs), enabling their distinction from non-EV particles. However, the application of cryo-EM for EV sample characterization has been limited by a combination of low imaging throughput and complex image analysis of the structurally diverse EVs. To address these challenges, we developed a workflow combining automated cryo-EM image acquisition with supervised machine learning (sML)-assisted particle detection and classification. Automated image acquisition facilitates the ro

Cancer-Associated Fibroblasts Influence Survival in Pleural Mesothelioma: Digital Gene Expression Analysis and Supervised Machine Learning Model.

The exact mechanism of desmoplastic stromal reaction (DSR) formation is still unclear. The interaction between cancer cells and cancer-associated fibroblasts (CAFs) has an important role in tumor progression, while stromal changes are a poor prognostic factor in pleural mesothelioma (PM). We aimed to assess the impact of CAFs paracrine signaling within the tumor microenvironment and the DSR presence on survival, in a cohort of 77 PM patients. DSR formation was evaluated morphologically and by immunohistochemistry for Fibroblast activation protein alpha (FAP). Digital gene expression was analyz

Disease Delineation for Multiple Sclerosis, Friedreich Ataxia, and Healthy Controls Using Supervised Machine Learning on Speech Acoustics.

Neurodegenerative disease often affects speech. Speech acoustics can be used as objective clinical markers of pathology. Previous investigations of pathological speech have primarily compared controls with one specific condition and excluded comorbidities. We broaden the utility of speech markers by examining how multiple acoustic features can delineate diseases. We used supervised machine learning with gradient boosting (CatBoost) to delineate healthy speech from speech of people with multiple sclerosis or Friedreich ataxia. Participants performed a diadochokinetic task where they repeated al

Accounting for age in prediction of discharge destination following elective lumbar fusion: a supervised machine learning approach.

BACKGROUND CONTEXT: The number of elective spinal fusion procedures performed each year continues to grow, making risk factors for post-operative complications following this procedure increasingly clinically relevant. Nonhome discharge (NHD) is of particular interest due to its associations with increased costs of care and rates of complications. Notably, increased age has been found to influence rates of NHD. PURPOSE: To identify aged-adjusted risk factors for nonhome discharge following elective lumbar fusion through the utilization of Machine Learning-generated predictions within stratifi

Predicting likelihood of psychological disorders in PlayerUnknown's Battlegrounds (PUBG) players from Asian countries using supervised machine learning.

Multiplayer Online Battle Arena (MOBA) has become one of the most popular genre of online video games played by gamers worldwide. Previous studies have exhibited that excessive engagement in games can lead to Internet Gaming Disorder (IGD). Internet Gaming Disorder has been associated with psychological disorders like impulsivity, anxiety and Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD). In this study, we propose an approach to use the game and player statistics along with self-esteem measure of a PlayerUnknown's Battlegrounds (PUBG, a MOBA game) player to predict whether he/she suffers fro

Explainable artificial intelligence in forensic DNA analysis: Alleles identification in challenging electropherograms using supervised machine learning methods.

Challenging samples in capillary electrophoresis (CE)-based short tandem repeat (STR) analysis often produce artefactual signals that cannot be completely filtered out by expert electropherogram (EPG) reading systems, complicating allele interpretation. Previous studies have demonstrated the potential of artificial intelligence (AI) to address this issue by accurately distinguishing allele signals from artefacts in EPGs. Traditional machine learning models offer significant advantages in enhancing the interpretability and transparency of AI models used in DNA analysis, particularly in criminal

BiliQML: a supervised machine-learning model to quantify biliary forms from digitized whole slide liver histopathological images.

The progress of research focused on cholangiocytes and the biliary tree during development and following injury is hindered by limited available quantitative methodologies. Current techniques include two-dimensional standard histological cell-counting approaches, which are rapidly performed, error prone, and lack architectural context or three-dimensional analysis of the biliary tree in opacified livers, which introduce technical issues along with minimal quantitation. The present study aims to fill these quantitative gaps with a supervised machine-learning model (BiliQML) able to quantify bil
