The use of animal models in preclinical investigations for the development of a surgical mesh for pelvic organ prolapse.

INTRODUCTION AND HYPOTHESIS: Polypropylene (PP) mesh for the treatment of pelvic organ prolapse (POP) has raised substantial concerns over long-term complications, leading to its ban in multiple countries. In response, emerging materials are being explored as alternatives for prolapse surgery. Preclinical animal models have historically played a pivotal role in validating medical devices, prior to clinical trials. Successful translation of these materials necessitates the identification of suitable animal models that replicate the female human pelvis and its biomechanical properties. Preclinic

THE USE OF SURGICAL ADHESIVE AND SUTURE FIXING MESHES TO THE ABDOMINAL WALL: AN EXPERIMENTAL STUDY IN RATS.

AIM: Proper fixation of the surgical mesh determines the success of a herniorrhaphy. Understanding the inflammatory response and the mechanical properties of the mesh helps to define whether a fixation method is superior. This study aimed to evaluate the healing of defects in the abdominal wall of rats, comparing the repair of macroporous polypropylene meshes fixed with surgical glue and polypropylene thread. METHODS: In 20 Wistar rats, a defect was produced in the abdominal wall, with the integrity of the parietal peritoneum. For correction, the meshes were fixed with surgical glue (2-octyl

Comparative study of safety and efficacy of synthetic surgical glue for mesh fixation in ventral rectopexy.

BACKGROUND: Ventral mesh rectopexy (VMR) is a surgical option to treat rectal prolapse with pelvic floor dysfunction (PFD). Using synthetic surgical glue to fix the mesh to the anterior rectal wall after ventral dissection could be advantageous in comparison with sutured or stapled fixation. This study aimed to evaluate the safety and efficacy of synthetic surgical glue for mesh fixation compared with suture mesh fixation in VMR. METHODS: This observational cohort study is a retrospective analysis conducted in a University Hospital Pelvic Surgery Center. All consecutive female patients (n = 1

Cost analysis of surgical treatment for pelvic organ prolapse by laparoscopic sacrocolpopexy or transvaginal mesh.

OBJECTIVES: The objective of this study is to compare direct costs of repairing pelvic organ prolapse by laparoscopic sacrocolpopexy (LS) against vaginal mesh (VM). Our hypothesis is the correction of pelvic organ prolapse by LS has a similar cost per procedure compared to VM. MATERIAL AND METHODS: We made a retrospective comparative analysis of medium cost per procedure of first 69 consecutive LS versus first 69 consecutive VM surgeries. We calculate direct cost for each procedure: structural outlays, personal, operating room occupation, hospital stay, perishable or inventory material and pr

Surgical Planning and 3D-Printed Mesh Implant for Effective Bone Gap Management: A Case Report.

INTRODUCTION: Critical-size bone defects in distal tibial open wounds pose a formidable challenge, requiring interventions that can address osseous reconstruction with less number of surgeries. Current treatment modalities may fall short in achieving optimal outcomes, with respect to early weight bearing due to the inability of the graft to sustain weight, graft-related infections, non-union in large defects, donor site morbidity, and non-availability of bone grafts due to earlier harvest. This case report explores the potential application of a 3D-printed mesh implant to this complex clinical

Surgical Management of Temporomandibular Joint Ankylosis with Mersilene Mesh Interpositional Arthroplasty: A Case Series Study.

Ankylosis of the temporomandibular joint (TMJ) is one of the most prevalent TMJ disorders in patients who have experienced trauma. Due to the high risk of recurrence, gap arthroplasty without interpositional material has been gradually discontinued as a treatment for TMJ ankylosis. After arthroplasty surgery, various interposition materials have been used to prevent a recurrence. Reporting on the effectiveness of TMJ bony ankylosis treatment using Mersilene mesh interpositional arthroplasty is the purpose of this study. This was a retrospective study carried out on five patients of TMJ ankylosi

Five-year follow-up of laparoscopic bladder neck suspension using synthetic mesh and surgical staples.

We report long-term follow-up of 40 patients who underwent a laparoscopic adaptation of the Burch procedure between May 1990 and December 1992. This procedure, in which synthetic mesh and surgical staples are used in place of sutures to effect the suspension, was previously described by the principal author and colleagues for use in the treatment of genuine stress urinary incontinence (J Laparoendosc Surg 1993;3:563-566). Minimum 5-year follow-up has been obtained for 34 of these patients either by office visit with the principal author (27 patients) or by telephone interview with the patient

Latent disentanglement in mesh variational autoencoders improves the diagnosis of craniofacial syndromes and aids surgical planning.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: The use of deep learning to undertake shape analysis of the complexities of the human head holds great promise. However, there have traditionally been a number of barriers to accurate modelling, especially when operating on both a global and local level. METHODS: In this work, we will discuss the application of the Swap Disentangled Variational Autoencoder (SD-VAE) with relevance to Crouzon, Apert and Muenke syndromes. The model is trained on a dataset of 3D meshes of healthy and syndromic patients which was increased in size with a novel data augmentation technique
