Orthognathic surgery using pre-bent titanium plates and cutting guides has been shown to enhance surgical precision in positioning the maxilla. This technical note introduces an innovative approach that utilizes mixed reality to pre-bend titanium plates and simulate surgical guides with osteotomy lines and drilling holes, thereby aiding in the localization of the maxilla. Postoperative computed tomography showed a discrepancy of <2 mm in comparison to the preoperative virtual design. The virtual surgical planning for orthognathic surgery was dynamically transferred to the surgical procedure in

BACKGROUND: One limitation of orthognathic surgery is the narrow surgical field, which makes it difficult to view the operative site directly. Thus, many perioperative complications can occur. In this study, we evaluated the usefulness of computer-aided navigation techniques in orthognathic surgery.
METHODS: We enrolled 10 patients (3 men and 7 women) with facial deformities who were treated between July 2010 and February 2011. A Le Fort I osteotomy, sagittal split ramus osteotomy, and reduction malarplasty were performed with guided navigation.
RESULTS: All 10 patients were treated successf

In recent years, surgical navigation systems have shown remarkable development and allow real-time navigation of the surgical field, including locations of anatomical structures and lesions. This ability allows procedures to be performed with a high degree of accuracy. In cases of medication-related osteonecrosis of the jaw (MRONJ), proper removal of sequestrum or necrotic bone is essential for postoperative healing. However, the boundary between necrotic and healthy bone is difficult to determine in preoperative images, and there are no clear standards regarding the extent of bone resection f

BACKGROUND: Intraoperative computer navigation will soon play an important role in procedures performed on the anterior and lateral skull base. Electromagnetic systems compared to optical systems offer some advantages such as small hardware dimension and free unimpaired mobility of the surgeon.
PATIENTS AND METHODS: The NEN navigational system (Nicolet Electromagnetic Navigation System) was used in 22 patients who underwent microscopic/endoscopic surgery for polypoid rhinosinusitis. It is the prototype of a new system, which localizes the surgical probe via the measurement of pulsed electroma

In orthognathic surgery, the positioning of the bone segments has a significant impact on the postoperative occlusion, temporomandibular joint, and facial morphology. Within the field of digital surgical planning, the placement of these bone segments represents the transfer of the virtual surgical plan (VSP). Computer-aided design/computer-aided manufacturing-assisted bone segment positioning devices have demonstrated high localization accuracy, but they require complex guide systems. The mixed reality technique described here, based on pre-bent titanium plates, facilitates the transfer of the

BACKGROUND: Previous studies reported good outcomes of acetabular cup placement using portable navigation systems during THA. However, we are aware of no prospective studies comparing inexpensive portable navigation systems using augmented reality (AR) technology with accelerometer-based portable navigation systems in THA.
QUESTIONS/PURPOSES: (1) Is the placement accuracy of the acetabular cup using the AR-based portable navigation system superior to that of an accelerometer-based portable navigation system? (2) Do the frequencies of surgical complications differ between the two groups?

BACKGROUND If a tooth fragment is displaced into the floor of the mouth during mandibular third molar extraction, surgical retrieval can be challenging because the fragment cannot be directly visualized in the operative field. Several studies have described the use of navigation systems or endoscopic techniques individually. However, to the best of our knowledge, no reports have described their combined use for this condition. CASE REPORT A 37-year-old man underwent extraction of a left mandibular third molar at a dental clinic in May 2021, during which a root fragment was displaced into the f

Beginning with basic stereotactic operative methods in neurosurgery, intraoperative navigation and image guidance systems have since become the norm in that field. Following the introduction of image guidance into spinal surgery, there has been a dramatic increase in its utilization across disciplines and pathologies. Spine tumor surgery encompasses a wide range of complex surgical techniques and treatment strategies. Similarly to deformity correction and trauma surgery, spine navigation holds potential to improve outcomes and optimize surgical technique for spinal tumors. Recent data demonstr
