Carriage rate of CPE, ESBL-producing coliforms and MRSA in community settings in Suriname.

BACKGROUND: Colonization by antimicrobial-resistant bacteria can cause difficult-to-treat infections, yet their carriage prevalence in Suriname is unknown. This cross-sectional study assessed intestinal community carriage and the molecular epidemiology of pathogens of public health importance, including carbapenemase-producing Enterobacterales (CPE), ESBL-producing coliforms (ESBL-c) and MRSA. METHODS: Faecal samples were collected from 310 non-hospitalized patients between October 2024 and February 2025 and analysed using selective culture and WGS. RESULTS: The prevalence of ESBL carriage w

Sexually transmitted infections on the border between Suriname and French Guiana: A scoping review.

PURPOSE: The Maroni basin -delineating the border between Suriname and French Guiana- presents sociocultural, geographical and economic circumstances that have been conducive to the circulation of sexually transmitted infections and to delays in diagnosis and care. Given the scarcity of published data, we aimed to describe different sexually transmitted infections along the Maroni and to gain a broader understanding of the epidemiologic situation. METHODS: We conducted a scoping review of the efforts to approach the problem of sexually transmitted infections in this complex border area. Tempo

Applicability of the WHO maternal near-miss tool: A nationwide surveillance study in Suriname.

BACKGROUND: Maternal near-miss (MNM) is an important maternal health quality-of-care indicator. To facilitate comparison between countries, the World Health Organization (WHO) developed the "MNM-tool". However, several low- and middle-income countries have proposed adaptations to prevent underreporting, ie, Namibian and Sub-Sahara African (SSA)-criteria. This study aims to assess MNM and associated factors in middle-income country Suriname by applying the three different MNM tools. METHODS: A nationwide prospective population-based cohort study was conducted using the Suriname Obstetric Surve

Improved referral and survival of newborns after scaling up of intensive care in Suriname.

BACKGROUND: Scaling up neonatal care facilities in developing countries can improve survival of newborns. Recently, the only tertiary neonatal care facility in Suriname transitioned to a modern environment in which interventions to improve intensive care were performed. This study evaluates impact of this transition on referral pattern and outcomes of newborns. METHODS: A retrospective chart study amongst newborns admitted to the facility was performed and outcomes of newborns between two 9-month periods before and after the transition in March 2015 were compared. RESULTS: After the transiti

Maternal mortality audit in Suriname between 2010 and 2014, a reproductive age mortality survey.

BACKGROUND: The fifth Millennium Development Goal (MDG-5) aimed to improve maternal health, targeting a maternal mortality ratio (MMR) reduction of 75% between 1990 and 2015. The objective of this study was to identify all maternal deaths in Suriname, determine the extent of underreporting, estimate the reduction, audit the maternal deaths and assess underlying causes and substandard care factors. METHODS: A reproductive age mortality survey was conducted in Suriname (South-American upper-middle income country) between 2010 and 2014 to identify all maternal deaths in the country. MMR was comp

The impact of COVID-19 on heart failure admissions in Suriname-A call for action.

INTRODUCTION: During the height of the COVID-19 pandemic, there was a worldwide reorganization of healthcare systems focusing on limiting the spread of the virus. The impact of these measures on heart failure (HF) admissions is scarcely reported in Low and Middle Income Countries (LMICs) including Suriname. We therefore assessed HF hospitalizations before and during the pandemic and call for action to improve healthcare access in Suriname through the development and implementation of telehealth strategies. METHODS: Retrospectively collected clinical (# hospitalizations per patient, in hospita

Cleansing the world of the germ of laziness: hygiene, sanitation, and the Javanese population in Suriname.

In 1915 the Rockefeller Foundation took its hookworm eradication campaign to Suriname, but was soon disappointed because of opposition from its main target group: the Javanese. Moreover, authorities and planters objected to the construction of latrines because of the costs and their belief that the Javanese were "unhygienic". In describing the labor migration from Java to Suriname, I show that this "lack of hygiene" was closely related to the system's organization. I argue that uncleanliness was the consequence of harmful socio-economic and ecological conditions. Secondly I suggest that even t

[Hypercalcemia due to adult T-cell lymphoma in a man from Surinam].

A 48-year-old male patient from Surinam presented with anorexia, nausea and weight loss. An extreme hypercalcaemia of 5.08 mmol/l was found. Further diagnostic investigations showed that this patient had a HTLV-1 positive adult T-cell leukaemia/lymphoma (ATL/L). This is often associated with multilobularly nucleated lymphocytes, bone destruction and hypercalcaemia. Skin localisations are frequently observed. The combination of cytomorphology, immunophenotyping, HTLV-1 seropositivity and clinical findings points to the diagnosis. The patient was treated with 6 courses of chemotherapy consisting

Neotropical echinococcosis in Suriname: Echinococcus oligarthrus in the orbit and Echinococcus vogeli in the abdomen.

This paper reports two cases of neotropical echinococcosis caused by Echinococcus oligarthrus and E. vogeli, neither of which has been reported from Suriname. Case 1, a six-year-old boy, presented a 15 x 25 mm retro-ocular cystic tumor (observed by ultrasound, computed tomography scan, and magnetic resonance imaging) causing exophthalmia, chemosis, palpebral ptosis, and blindness of the left eye. Of two tentative diagnoses, Echinococcus cyst or dermoid tumor, the former was shown to be correct at surgery when a clear liquid and detached protoscoleces were aspirated. Rostellar hooks of the prot

Mercury exposure of maroon workers in the small scale gold mining in Suriname.

Suriname is experiencing a revival of small scale gold mining activities, with about 10,000 to 15,000 workers involved in 1996. The estimated production in 1995 is at least 10,000 kg crude gold. Gold is extracted with mercury and methods used are comparable with those described for gold mining in the Amazon Basin. Since no data exist on the internal mercury exposure of workers in Suriname a study was performed. A group of mercury-exposed Maroons, who are principally involved in the mining located in the tropical rainforest, is compared with nonexposed Maroons living in a non-gold mining area.

Exposure to total and methylmercury among pregnant women in Suriname: sources and public health implications.

Previous research has found that women and children living in rural, interior communities in Suriname have high concentrations of mercury in hair. Freshwater fish from these areas also have high concentrations of mercury. Artisanal and small-scale gold mining operations in parts of the country use elemental mercury to extract gold from soils and sediments. Total mercury and methylmercury concentrations have been determined in hair and blood from pregnant women across the country. Pregnant women from interior communities have significantly higher concentrations of both total and methylmercury i

HIV-1 Genetic Diversity and Drug Resistance Mutations Among Treatment-Naive Adult Patients in Suriname.

The molecular epidemiologic profile of HIV-1 in Suriname was determined through protease (PR) and reverse transcriptase (RT) sequences obtained from HIV-1 strains collected from 100 drug-naive HIV-1-infected persons. Subtype determination revealed that most viruses were of subtype B (94.9%) in both PR and RT genomic regions, followed by B/D recombinants (5.1%). Analysis of drug resistance mutations showed only one transmitted dug resistance mutation (TDRM) (V75M) in a single strain. The genetic data obtained can serve as a baseline for Suriname to monitor emerging mutations. This study reveals

Malaria Elimination in Suriname, Timor-Leste and Georgia: Strategic Lessons for Sub-Saharan Africa.

BACKGROUND: Malaria remains a major cause of morbidity and mortality worldwide, with over 263 million cases and 597,000 deaths estimated in 2023, of which 94% occurred in Sub-Saharan Africa. Despite this heavy burden, several low- and middle-income countries have recently succeeded in eliminating local malaria transmission. OBJECTIVE: This article describes and synthesises malaria elimination experiences in Suriname, Timor-Leste and Georgia, all three certified malaria-free by the World Health Organization in 2025, to identify strategic lessons and contextual factors that may inform eliminati

Plasmodium falciparum malaria in Suriname: how targeted interventions in marginalized populations led to elimination.

BACKGROUND: Plasmodium falciparum (Pf) was the primary malaria species in Suriname for many decades. Following the introduction of targeted and inclusive interventions malaria incidence in the country decreased. Pf ceased to be the primary prevalent species in 2007. The aim of this study is to describe the interventions and discuss the strategies that contributed to Pf elimination in Suriname. METHODS: National malaria surveillance data from 2000 to 2024 were analyzed, with a focus on Pf. Data were disaggregated to age and sex and country of origin. Interventions aimed at progressing from con

Geographic differences in exposures to metals and essential elements in pregnant women living in Suriname.

BACKGROUND: In Suriname, 20% of pregnancies end in adverse birth outcomes. While prenatal exposure to metals may lead to adverse health outcomes, exposure assessments in Suriname are scant. Environmental contamination from mercury (Hg) used in artisanal goldmining in the Amazonian Interior, and the uncontrolled use of pesticides in suburban regions are of particular concern. OBJECTIVE: This study assessed geographic differences in exposures to metals and essential elements in pregnant Surinamese women. METHODS: This study is a subset (n = 400) of the Caribbean Consortium for Research in Envi
