Efficacy of tulathromycin injectable solution for the treatment of naturally occurring Swine respiratory disease.

Tulathromycin, a novel triamilide antimicrobial, was evaluated for treatment of swine respiratory disease (SRD) in field efficacy studies involving 720 pigs in six North American swine herds. In each study, feeder pigs with clinical SRD were randomly assigned in equal numbers to a group treated with tulathromycin given as a single injection at 2.5 mg/kg of body weight or to a saline-treated control group. Four of the studies included a third group treated with ceftiofur sodium for 3 consecutive days at 3 mg/kg of body weight. Pigs were treated on day 0 and evaluated for treatment response on d

A review of spontaneous ulcer disease in domestic animals: chickens, cattle, horses, and swine.

The human species is perhaps unique for its high incidence of spontaneous, chronic ulcer of the glandular mucosa of the stomach and duodenum. Nevertheless, spontaneous ulcers, usually of the stomach, commonly occur in many domestic animals. Some of these lesions are chronic and they may occur in either the glandular or squamous-lined regions of the stomach. As with the human disease(s) the pathogenesis in domestic animals is multifactorial, poorly understood, and variable between and within species. Some parallelisms exist in aggressive and defensive factors, but parasitic factors, via gastrin

Factor VIII synthesis: hepatic and renal allografts in swine with von Willebrand's disease.

Transplantation experiments were utilized to study the possible sites of synthesis of von Willebrand factor (vWF) and factor VIII (F VIII) activities. Three normal kidney and two normal liver allografts were implanted into five swine with von Willebrand's disease (vWD) that survived for 1,6, and 7, and 4 and 9 days, respectively. The correction of the multiple hemostatic defects of vWD by organ transplantation was evaluated using the F VIII procoagulant activity, bleeding time, and platelet aggregating factor (PAF) levels; i.e., vWF levels. Normal kidney allografts produced no changes in the b

Recoding structural glycoprotein E2 in classical swine fever virus (CSFV) produces complete virus attenuation in swine and protects infected animals against disease.

Controlling classical swine fever (CSF) mainly involves vaccination with live attenuated vaccines (LAV). Experimental CSFV LAVs has been lately developed through reverse genetics using several different approaches. Here we present that codon de-optimization in the major CSFV structural glycoprotein E2 coding region, causes virus attenuation in swine. Four different mutated constructs (pCSFm1-pCSFm4) were designed using various mutational approaches based on the genetic background of the highly virulent strain Brescia (BICv). Three of these constructs produced infectious viruses (CSFm2v, CSFm3v

[Oral fluid PCR monitoring for Aujeszky's disease virus detection in a swine farm].

Aujeszky's disease virus infects pigs and causes latency in the absence of clinical signs, making its diagnosis very difficult. Due to the huge economic losses related to this disease, the Argentinian government has created and implemented a control and eradication plan to manage it. As part of the monitoring plan to assess the progress of the control and eradication plan for a positive status farm, oral fluid samples were obtained from animals at 40, 70, 90,120 and 130-160days of age, after one year of vaccination with a deleted and inactivated vaccine. These samples were processed using an a

Salmonella Infection in Pigs: Disease, Prevalence, and a Link between Swine and Human Health.

Salmonella is one of the most spread foodborne pathogens worldwide, and Salmonella infections in humans still represent a global health burden. The main source of Salmonella infections in humans is represented by contaminated animal-derived foodstuffs, with pork products being one of the most important players. Salmonella infection in swine is critical not only because it is one of the main causes of economic losses in the pork industry, but also because pigs can be infected by several Salmonella serovars, potentially contaminating the pig meat production chain and thus posing a significant th

Current status and future recommendations for feral swine disease surveillance in the United States.

USDA APHIS Wildlife Services (WS) responded to the threat of feral swine as a pathogen reservoir as early as 2004. To increase awareness and knowledge on that risk, WS began opportunistic sampling of animals harvested by its operational component to curtail swine damage to agriculture and property. Initially, pseudorabies and swine brucellosis were of most concern, as both serve as a potential threat to the domestic swine industry and the latter also possesses zoonotic implications. In 2006, classical swine fever, a foreign animal disease, became the main driver for feral swine pathogen survei

African swine fever interference with foot-and-mouth disease infection and seroconversion in pigs.

Initial oral infection of pigs with either highly virulent (L-60) or moderately virulent (DR-2) African swine fever virus (ASFV), followed in 3 days with exposure to foot-and-mouth disease virus (FMDV) (tongue inoculation and contact), failed to cause FMDV infection or seroconversion in 18 of 22 L-60-infected pigs and 13 of 34 DR-2-infected pigs. Of the 13 DR-2-infected pigs remaining free of foot-and-mouth disease (FMD), 2 pigs survived to 24 days without antibody to FMDV, despite constant contact with clinically infected pigs with FMD. Three other DR-2-infected pigs never developed FMD lesio

Experimental edema disease of swine (E. coli enterotoxemia). 3. Pathology and pathogenesis.

Experimental colibacillary (Escherichia coli) enterotoxemia as described in this report mimics natural edema disease both clinically and in gross pathology. The histopathology is characterized by accumulations of non-inflammatory edema and by arteriopathy. The smaller arterial and arteriolar changes recorded here are similar to those described in natural edema disease. The vascular changes described in recovered cases of experimental colibacillary enterotoxemia concur with those reported in so-called subacute and chronic edema disease. The arteriolar changes that occur in colibacillary enterot

Factors Associated With Biosecurity Preparedness for Foreign Animal Diseases Among Swine Farms in the United States Territory of Puerto Rico.

Successful responses to foreign animal diseases (FADs) such as African Swine Fever (ASF) in swine populations depend on the timely planning and implementation of effective biosecurity measures at the farm level. This study aimed to characterize biosecurity preparedness among swine farms in Puerto Rico and to identify geographic areas with higher biosecurity-related vulnerabilities across the island. Data were collected from 95 swine farms from seven regions using an adapted form of the enhanced biosecurity plan templates available from the Secure Pork Supply (SPS) Plan, a nationally recognized

Pathological lesions in swine at slaughter. VI. The relation between some mainly non-environmental factors, diseases, weight gain and carcass quality.

The influence of some diseases (lesions at slaughter) on daily weight gain and the relation between some mainly non-environmental factors and diseases, weight gain and carcass quality were studied in 12 herds running an all in/all out fattener production. The material consisted of 9800 baconers slaughtered in the period 1975–1977. The piglets were purchased when about 10 weeks old. The number of batches was 60. The investigation showed that 6 of the 12 diseases included in the analyses had a statistically significant influence on daily weight gain: pyaemia, atrophic rhinitis, severe and modera

A Novel Preclinical Model of Peripheral Artery Disease in Swine for Investigating Flow-Induced Angiogenesis.

INTRODUCTION: Peripheral artery disease (PAD) affects over 200 million people globally and remains a therapeutic challenge, particularly in patients who are not candidates for standard revascularization. While shear stress-induced angiogenesis holds promise as a novel therapeutic strategy, translational platforms to evaluate its efficacy are lacking. METHODS: We developed a large-animal model of PAD using familial hypercholesterolemic miniature swine fed an atherogenic diet to induce metabolic syndrome. Hindlimb ischemia was surgically induced by excising the right external iliac artery with

Impact of foot-and-mouth disease virus on memory T and B cell populations in swine.

Foot-and-mouth disease virus (FMDV) is a highly contagious picornavirus that poses a serious threat to the global livestock industry. This study aimed to investigate the impact of FMDV infection on the memory immune response in pigs and to analyze the role of type II interferon (IFN-γ) in this process. By comparing pigs artificially infected with FMDV and those vaccinated with inactivated FMDV vaccine, we found that FMDV infection significantly suppressed the development of memory T helper (Th) and B cell populations, affecting the memory immune response. Further experiments showed that pretre

African swine fever: A re-emerging viral disease threatening the global pig industry.

African swine fever (ASF) recently has spread beyond sub-Saharan Africa to the Trans-Caucasus region, parts of the Russian Federation and Eastern Europe. In this new epidemiological scenario, the disease has similarities, but also important differences, compared to the situation in Africa, including the substantial involvement of wild boar. A better understanding of this new situation will enable better control and prevent further spread of disease. In this article, these different scenarios are compared, and recent information on the pathogenesis of ASF virus strains, the immune response to i
