Risk factors for Campylobacter enteritis in Switzerland.

From February to December 1991, 167 sporadic cases of Campylobacter enteritis in Switzerland and 282 controls were enrolled in a case-control study using self-administered questionnaires. In the multivariate matched analysis, travel abroad was identified as the most important risk factor for an infection with Campylobacter (adjusted odds ratio [OR] = 21.2, 95% confidence interval [CI]7.6-56.2). Having foreign citizenship also increased the risk (OR = 6.7, 95% CI 1.3-34.5). Among food items consumed within five days before onset of illness, consumption of poultry liver was shown to be a risk fa

Alcohol and accidents in Switzerland--a critical review.

The analysis of alcohol-related traffic accidents points to a negative relationship between the average amount of alcohol consumed and the percentage of alcohol-related accidents. The data show that the officially registered problem-rates among drivers under the influence of alcohol depend primarily neither on consumption trends nor on general preventive factors, but, rather on the capacity for accident detection, the recording practices of the authorities and a less tolerant public opinion. Regional differences in the willingness to enforce control measures are related to varying cultural dri

[Triplets and quadruplets in Switzerland, 1985-1988].

To determine the incidence of multiple births and associated morbidity and mortality, we collected in a retrospective study all the multiple births (twins excluded) in Switzerland from 1985 to 1988. In all we followed 77 sets of triplets and 9 sets of quadruplets, representing an annual incidence of 1/3968 births for the triplets and 1/33,947 births for the quadruplets. The incidence of induced pregnancies increased in the period 1985 to 1988. The principal complications were premature contractions and preeclampsia. Only 56% of the children were born in a hospital with a neonatal intensive car

[The medical care of newborn infants in Switzerland].

Switzerland has one of the lowest neonatal mortalities in the world (5%) which has barely decreased during the last 10 years. The aim of care for newborn infants has therefore shifted from reducing mortality to reducing morbidity and increasing quality of life. Diseases which were frequent and severe some twenty years ago, such as rubella embryopathy and rhesus incompatibility, have almost disappeared today due to general prophylaxis. On the other hand, new, partly iatrogenic diseases, such as retinopathy of prematurity and bronchopulmonary dysplasia, considerably affect present morbidity of n

[Epidemiology of legionnaires' disease in Switzerland in 1988].

Both sporadic cases and outbreaks of legionnaire's disease have been reported. To date, no outbreaks have occurred but several case reports have been published in Switzerland. The newly organized surveillance system of notifiable diseases, introduced in 1987, makes it possible for the first time to analyze reported sporadic cases more precisely. In 1988, the laboratories reported a total of 32 cases with cultural or serologic proof of legionellosis. In 75% of cases patients were aged over 40 years, 78% occurred among males. The majority of them were known to be smokers. In 9 cases an underlyin

[Extent and evaluation of air pollution in Switzerland].

The measurements of atmospheric pollution carried out in Switzerland during the last years revealed that high concentrations are not only found in city centers but in suburbs as well. The emission limits which should be respected in order to protect health and environment are very often exceeded. The pollution through nitrogen dioxide is specially crucial as well as that of sulfur dioxide during the winter months. Ozone concentrations are remarkably high in summer--ozone being formed by photochemical reactions of nitrogen oxides and hydrocarbons--and can be transported far away, even in rural

[Elimination of measles, mumps and rubella in Switzerland].

The combined measles, mumps and rubella live vaccine nowadays available is very well tolerated and confers lifelong immunity. A complete immunization coverage among toddlers, schoolchildren and adolescents should nearly eliminate these three childhood diseases in a given population. The cost/benefit ratio of the immunization is for all three diseases rewarding in Switzerland. Reactions expected to the combined vaccine are mild and complications negligible in comparison to the diseases prevented. Starting in 1987 a nationwide campaign will begin in Switzerland; the aim is to vaccinate next to t

[How widespread is Q fever in Switzerland?].

There are very few reports in the literature on mass seroepidemiological studies of the prevalence of Q fever antibodies. Those to be found are mostly concerned with focal epidemics of Q fever. Out of more than 2000 serum specimens from blood donors analyzed at random in Switzerland in 1982 for Q fever antibodies, 3.5% gave seropositive results (CBR titer at least 1:10). In selected population samples, e.g. forestry workers or vets, the prevalence was distinctly higher (7.6% and 25.7%). Contact with sheep and the consumption of unboiled and not commercially processed milk proved to be mutually

The incidence of coeliac disease in children in Switzerland.

In the pediatric hospitals and clinics of Zurich, St. Gallen, Winterthur, Aarau and Lucerne, 488 cases of coeliac disease have been found in children born between 1960 and 1978. The diagnosis was established clinically and confirmed by intestinal biopsy in each case. The data of coeliac patients diagnosed before 1966 and after 1975 has proven to be unreliable for statistical evaluation and were omitted from our calculations. During the years 1966-1975, 354 patients with confirmed coeliac disease and 412733 live births were registered. This corresponds, for the symptomatic coeliac disease, to a

[Diphtheria epidemic in eastern Switzerland in 1974].

A diphtheria epidemic in the eastern part of Switzerland in 1974 and the measures which were taken for its management and eradication are described. In particular it is pointed out that at present diphtheria displays atypical clinical symptoms in Europe, a fact that renders the diagnosis very difficult in many cases. Therefore, it is important to perform a throat swab in every patient with suspected diphtheria; it is also necessary to explicitly require a search for C. diphtheriae. The early recognition and early treatment of diphtheria with penicillin or erythromycin is of the utmost importan

Mobilization of Mechanically Ventilated Patients in Switzerland.

PURPOSE: Growing evidence suggests that early mobilization benefits intensive care unit (ICU) patients. However, national practices and the culture of individual ICUs influence mobilization activities. MATERIALS AND METHODS: In a 1-day, Swiss point prevalence study conducted in 35 ICUs (representing 45% of all ICUs), the highest level of mobilization for mechanically ventilated patients was characterized using the validated ICU Mobility Scale, along with data collection for potential safety events and mobilization barriers. RESULTS: Among 161 mechanically ventilated patients, a total of 33%

Increasing incidence of canine leptospirosis in Switzerland.

A marked increase in canine leptospirosis was observed in Switzerland over 10 years with a peak incidence of 28.1 diagnosed cases/100,000 dogs/year in the most affected canton. With 95% affected dogs living at altitudes <800 m, the disease presented a seasonal pattern associated with temperature (r2 0.73) and rainfall (r2 0.39), >90% cases being diagnosed between May and October. The increasing yearly incidence however was only weakly correlated with climatic data including number of summer (r2 0.25) or rainy days (r2 0.38). Serovars Australis and Bratislava showed the highest seropositivity r

[First cases of besnoitiosis in cattle in Switzerland].

Bovine besnoitiosis has been diagnosed in neighboring countries but not in Switzerland so far. This disease occurs endemically in France and focal outbreaks have been reported in Germany and Italy. To determine if Besnoitia besnoiti is introduced into Switzerland through the import of breeding cattle from France, a systematic serological survey was performed. A total of 412 breeding cattle (from 114 farms) imported from France into Switzerland between 2005 and 2011, were serologically examined for antibodies against B. besnoiti using a commercial ELISA kit (PrioCHECK© Besnoitia Ab 2.0, Prionic

[Bovine fasciolosis in Switzerland: relevance and control].

In Switzerland, bovine fasciolosis is an economically important but often overlooked disease of dairy cows. The intermediate host of Fasciola hepatica in Switzerland is Galba truncatula, an amphibious snail living in humid habitats which are infected by miracidia from recently hatched Fasciola eggs. The definitive hosts include cattle, sheep, goats, horses, and free-living ruminants. Infection of these hosts occur from metacercariae, usually encysted on vegetation. Infection risk depends on the location of the habitat on the farm. There is a lower risk for the intermediate host to become infec

Two cases of feline leishmaniosis in Switzerland.

Two cats with Leishmania species infections were investigated. The first had been imported from Spain with a non-healing, ulcerated nodule on a hindleg. The presence of Leishmania species was detected by histopathology and pcr on samples of skin. The lesion was unresponsive to treatment with allopurinol for three months but the cat was treated successfully by removing the lesion surgically. The second cat had lived in both Spain and Switzerland, and had a history of recurrent skin lesions on its head and neck. A diagnosis of pemphigus foliaceus was made on the basis of histopathology, but Leis

[Suckling mortality in fattening rabbits in Switzerland].

The aims of this project were to determine mortality rate and aetiology of losses in suckling rabbits during the first 14 days of life. Post-mortem examinations were done on 1096 siblings from 8 conventional farms. Mortality rates varied from 0 to 17.0%. Main death causes were non-infectious and included stillbirth (13.9%), weakness due to reduced birth weight (3.0%), starvation (11.6%), runting (11.6%), cannibalism (0.5%) and scattering (7.9%). The last four causes mainly attributed to insufficient nursing by the doe. Only 21.8% of the losses were of infectious aetiology.

Incidence of Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease in Switzerland.

The incidence of Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease (CJD) in Switzerland increased two-fold in 2001, and figures from the first quarter of 2002 indicate that it continues to rise. Neither age at onset nor duration of disease were different from previous years. Genetic analysis of the 27 reported cases revealed only one disease-associated mutation in the prion gene. None of the recognised risk factors for acquired CJD were reported on the official notification forms. Glycotype profiling, histopathology, and immunohistochemistry indicate that none of the cases fulfilled the definition of variant CJD, whi

Outbreak of echovirus 30 meningitis in Switzerland.

This study includes 80 patients (38 children and 42 adults) who contracted aseptic meningitis in the summer of 1996 in Fribourg, Switzerland. Virological studies revealed an enteroviral infection in 65 out of 70 (93%) investigated patients. In 47 out of the 53 cases (89%) where a precise virus could be identified, the causative agent was an Echovirus 30. More than 50 patients lived in an area within a 5-km radius. The patients presented with the classic symptoms and signs of aseptic meningitis. In contrast, polymorphonuclear leukocytes predominated in the cerebrospinal fluid in the first 24 h

[Causes of prenatal foal loss in Switzerland].

In Switzerland during the foaling season 1988 and 1989 the cause of abortion in 60 foals was investigated. Special attention was paid to infections with equine herpesvirus 1 (EHV 1). Diagnosis were based on post-mortem, histopathological, bacteriological and immunofluorescence investigation. The results confirm data from other countries, that EHV 1 is the most prevalent viral (20%) cause of abortion, followed by various bacterial agents (12%). Other causes were umbilical torsion, twin pregnancy and malformations. In 18% of the cases the investigation of fetuses did not give any results as to t

Prenatal diagnosis of thalassemia and hemoglobinopathies in Switzerland.

During a 10-month period, 10 couples originating from Africa (3), the tropics (1) and the thalassemia-belt region (6), living in Switzerland, requested prenatal diagnosis of hemoglobinopathies. Hb SS (twice), Hb Bart's (Hydrops fetalis) and beta-thalassemia major were diagnosed either by gene mapping or by direct detection of the mutations in DNA amplified by the PCR procedure. Whenever it was possible to obtain fetal blood or tissue, diagnosis was confirmed. In one Vietnamese man, concomitant existence of alpha-thal 1 with beta-thalassemia resulted in an unusually high Hb level because of bal
