Presynaptic receptors for dopamine, histamine, and serotonin.

Presynaptic receptors for dopamine, histamine and serotonin that are located on dopaminergic, histaminergic and sertonergic axon terminals, respectively, function as autoreceptors. Presynaptic receptors also occur as heteroreceptors on other axon terminals. Auto- and heteroreceptors mainly affect Ca(2+) -dependent exocytosis from the receptor-bearing nerve ending. Some additionally subserve other presynaptic functions.Presynaptic dopamine, histamine and serotonin receptors are involved in various (patho)physiological conditions. Examples are the following:Dopamine autoreceptors play a role in

Temporoparietal frey syndrome: An uncommon variant of a common syndrome.

OBJECTIVES/HYPOTHESIS: To describe a previously unreported variant of Frey syndrome. Gustatory sweating is a common complication of parotidectomy and typically directly overlies the surgical site or parotid bed. In some instances, the sweating may occur beyond the parotid bed or involve tissue that was undisturbed during the procedure. STUDY DESIGN: Retrospective case series. METHODS: All cases of temporoparietal Frey syndrome in a single surgeon's experience were reviewed. RESULTS: Seven patients were found to have temporoparietal Frey syndrome. Three patients had concomitant first bite sy

Individual sympathetic postganglionic neurons coinnervate myenteric ganglia and smooth muscle layers in the gastrointestinal tract of the rat.

A full description of the terminal architecture of sympathetic axons innervating the gastrointestinal (GI) tract has not been available. To label sympathetic fibers projecting to the gut muscle wall, dextran biotin was injected into the celiac and superior mesenteric ganglia (CSMG) of rats. Nine days postinjection, animals were euthanized and stomachs and small intestines were processed as whole mounts (submucosa and mucosa removed) to examine CSMG efferent terminals. Myenteric neurons were counterstained with Cuprolinic Blue; catecholaminergic axons were stained immunohistochemically for tyro

Surgical anatomy of the internal carotid plexus branches to the abducens nerve in the cavernous sinus.

OBJECTIVE: Sympathetic branches to the abducens nerve derived from the internal carotid artery sympathetic plexus, while in the cavernous sinus, have been scantly described in the extant literature. Therefore, the present cadaveric study was performed to better elucidate this anatomy. PATIENTS AND METHODS: Eighteen cadaveric sides underwent dissection. RESULTS: The number of branches derived from the sympathetic plexus traveling with the internal carotid artery in the cavernous sinus was one on 11.1 %, two in 11.1 %, and three in 72.2 %. One side was found to have no branches (5.6 %). The me

Sesame lignans increase sympathetic nerve activity and blood flow in rat skeletal muscles.

Beneficial effects of sesame lignans, especially antioxidative effects, have been widely reported; however, its potential effects on autonomic nerves have not yet been investigated. Therefore, the current study aimed to investigate the effect of sesame lignans on the autonomic nervous system. The sympathetic nerve activity in rat skeletal muscle was measured using electrophysiological approaches, with blood flow determined using the laser Doppler method. Sesame lignans were administered intragastrically at 2 and 20 mg/kg, and after 60 min, the sympathetic nerve activity was observed to increas

The role of the paravertebral ganglia in human sympathetic neural discharge patterns.

KEY POINTS: The mechanisms affecting recruitment patterns of postganglionic sympathetic nerves remain unclear. The divergent and convergent preganglionic innervation patterns of postganglionic neurons and the presence of differently sized postganglionic nerves suggest that the ganglia may participate in modifying the discharge patterns of single sympathetic postganglionic neurons innervating the skeletal muscle circulation. Whether the ganglia affect the ordered behaviour of varying sized postganglionic sympathetic neurons in humans has not been studied. Trimethaphan infusion produced an order

Enkephalin modulation of neural transmission in the cat stellate ganglion: pharmacological actions of exogenous opiates.

Neural ganglionic transmission was studied in vivo in the cat, using closed chest anesthetized preparations. The right stellate ganglion and its branches were exposed retropleurally and prepared for electrical stimulation of pre- and postganglionic nerve fibers. The axillary artery was cannulated allowing direct administration of drugs in the arterial blood supplying the ganglion. Stimulation of postjunctional receptors could thus be obtained by local administration of selective agents. Local administration of nicotinic, muscarinic or histaminergic agents increased heart rate and blood pressur

Pre- and postganglionic vasomotor dysfunction causes distal limb coldness in multiple system atrophy.

BACKGROUND: The detailed pathophysiology of limb coldness in multiple system atrophy (MSA) is unknown. METHODS: We evaluated cutaneous vasomotor neural function in 18 MSA patients with or without limb coldness, and in 20 healthy volunteers as controls. We measured resting skin sympathetic nerve activity (SSNA) and spontaneous changes of the sympathetic skin response (SSR) and skin blood flow (skin vasomotor reflex: SVR), as well as SVR and reflex changes of SSNA after electrical stimulation. The parameters investigated were the SSNA frequency at rest, amplitude of SSNA reflex bursts, absolute

Sudomotor Dysfunction.

Disorders of sudomotor function are common and diverse in their presentations. Hyperhidrosis or hypohidrosis in generalized or regional neuroanatomical patterns can provide clues to neurologic localization and inform neurologic diagnosis. Conditions that impair sudomotor function include small fiber peripheral neuropathy, sudomotor neuropathy, myelopathy, α-synucleinopathies, autoimmune autonomic ganglionopathy, antibody-mediated hyperexcitability syndromes, and a host of medications. Particularly relevant to neurologic practice is the detection of postganglionic sudomotor deficits as a diagno

[Regional differences in the pineal gland of the cotton rat, Sigmodon hispidus. Light and electron microscopic observations].

The determination of volumes of the distal and proximal halves of the pineal glands of cotton rats (Sigmodon hispidus) and Sprague-Dawley rats revealed that the volume of the proximal half was far larger in cotton rats than in Sprague-Dawley rats. Light and electron microscopic examination of the distal, middle and proximal pineal regions in the cotton rat revealed the presence of regional differences in parenchymal cells, capillary endothelial cells and pericapillary spaces. Nuclear sizes of pinealocytes were larger in the distal region than in the middle and proximal regions. The diameter of

Laparoscopic retroperitoneal lymph node dissection: description of the nerve-sparing technique.

INTRODUCTION: Laparoscopic retroperitoneal lymph node dissection (RPLND) is associated with a more favorable postoperative recovery and decreased morbidity compared with open RPLND. To date, laparoscopic RPLND is used as a diagnostic tool for patients with clinical Stage I nonseminomatous germ cell tumor and as a diagnostic and therapeutic tool for patients with low-volume Stage II nonseminomatous germ cell tumor after chemotherapy. In an effort to further expand the therapeutic implications for laparoscopic RPLND, we describe a nerve-sparing technique for laparoscopic RPLND. TECHNICAL CONSID

Segmental distribution and central projections of renal afferent fibers in the cat studied by transganglionic transport of horseradish peroxidase.

The segmental and central distributions of renal nerve afferents in adults cats and kittens were studied by using retrograde and transganglionic transport of horseradish peroxidase (HRP). Transport of HRP from the central cut ends of the left renal nerves labelled afferent axons in the ipsilateral minor splanchnic nerves and sensory perikarya in the dorsal root ganglia from T12 to L4. The majority of labeled cells (85%) were located between L1 and L3. A few neurons in the contralateral dorsal root ganglia were also labeled. Labeled cells were not confined to any particular region within a dors

Cancer-induced Nerve Injury Unveils a Sympathetic-to-Sensory Nerve Axis in Head and Neck Cancer.

Oral squamous cell carcinoma (OSCC) is one of the most painful cancers, with patients frequently reporting spontaneous, neuropathic-like pain. While sympathetic and sensory nerves have been individually implicated in cancer progression, whether and how these systems interact to drive pain and tumor growth has remained unclear. Here, we integrate prospective human data with reverse-translational mouse models to reveal that cancer-induced nerve injury unveils crosstalk between sympathetic postganglionic neurons and trigeminal sensory afferents in the tumor microenvironment. Dramatically Amplified Thoracic Sympathetic Postganglionic Excitability and Integrative Capacity Revealed with Whole-Cell Patch-Clamp Recordings.

Thoracic paravertebral sympathetic postganglionic neurons (tSPNs) comprise the final integrative output of the distributed sympathetic nervous system controlling vascular and thermoregulatory systems. Considered a non-integrating relay, what little is known of tSPN intrinsic excitability has been determined by sharp microelectrodes with presumed impalement injury. We thus undertook the first electrophysiological characterization of tSPN cellular properties using whole-cell recordings and coupled results with a conductance-based model to explore the principles governing their excitability in ad

Effects of pre-ganglionic decentralization or post-ganglionic excision of the superior cervical ganglia on brain edema and heat stroke in rats.

The preventive effect of pre-ganglionic decentralization (Sympathetic trunk resectioN) or postganglionic excision (ganglionectomy) of the superior cervical ganglia on thermal injury induced brain edema or the development of heat stroke was assessed in rats. Brain edema was induced by cold or heat injury to the cortex in 24 rats. The results showed that decentralization, but not excision, of the superior cervical ganglia greatly inhibited the formation of brain edema which was subsequently induced. When heat stroke was induced by exposing 24 rats to an ambient temperature of 41 degree C, the la

[Nerve growth factor and the physiology of pain: the relationships among interoception, sympathetic neurons and the emotional response indicated by the molecular pathophysiology of congenital insensitivity to pain with anhidrosis].

Nerve growth factor (NGF) is a neurotrophic factor essential for the survival and maintenance of neurons. Congenital insensitivity to pain with anhidrosis (CIPA) is caused by loss-of-function mutations in NTRK1, which encodes a receptor tyrosine kinase, TrkA, for NGF. Mutations in NTRK1 cause the selective loss of NGF-dependent neurons, including both NGF-dependent primary afferents and sympathetic postganglionic neurons, in otherwise intact systems. The NGF-dependent primary afferents are thinly myelinated AΔ or unmyelinated C-fibers that are dependent on the NGF-TrkA system during developmen

Microneurography as a tool in clinical neurophysiology to investigate peripheral neural traffic in humans.

Microneurography is a method using metal microelectrodes to investigate directly identified neural traffic in myelinated as well as unmyelinated efferent and afferent nerves leading to and coming from muscle and skin in human peripheral nerves in situ. The present paper reviews how this technique has been used in clinical neurophysiology to elucidate the neural mechanisms of autonomic regulation, motor control and sensory functions in humans under physiological and pathological conditions. Microneurography is particularly important to investigate efferent and afferent neural traffic in unmyeli

Role of nitrosyl factors in the hindlimb vasodilation elicited by baroreceptor afferent nerve stimulation.

This study determined whether electrical stimulation (ES) of the baroreceptor afferent fibers in the aortic depressor nerve (ADN) produces hindlimb vasodilation in pentobarbital-anesthetized rats via the release of nitric oxide (NO)-containing (nitrosyl) factors from NO synthase-positive lumbar sympathetic nerve terminals. ES of the ADN (1-10 Hz for 15 s) produced frequency-dependent reductions in mean arterial blood pressure (MAP) and mesenteric and hindlimb vascular resistance (MR and HLR, respectively). The falls in resistance were substantially smaller in hindlimb beds in which the ipsilat
