Assessment of cows milk-related symptom scoring awareness tool in young Turkish children.

BACKGROUND: The diagnosis of cows milk protein allergy (CMPA) is not always easy. Cow's Milk-related Symptom Score (CoMiSS) has been developed to raise the awareness of CMPA among the primary health-care providers. In this study, we aimed to evaluate the validity of CoMiSS as a diagnostic approach of CMPA in infants in our country. METHODS: Infants with a CoMiSS of more than 12 points were included. An elimination diet was implemented in these infants for 4 weeks, and CoMiSS was reapplied. Infants with a reduction of ≥3 points in CoMiSS were considered responsive to the elimination diet, and

Dietary and symptom assessment in adults with self-reported non-coeliac gluten sensitivity.

BACKGROUND & AIMS: The mechanisms behind non-coeliac gluten sensitivity (NCGS) are not fully understood although clinical symptoms have shown to subside after wheat withdrawal. Self-prescription of a gluten-free diet (GFD) without medical supervision is common in NCGS subjects, resulting in dietary restrictions that can cause macro- and micronutrient deficiencies. The primary aim was to describe dietary intake, including FODMAP, in subjects with self-reported gluten sensitivity on GFD in whom coeliac disease (CD) and wheat allergy were excluded. Secondary, clinical symptoms and health-related

The Impact of Expectations and Framing on the course of Symptom Severity in Somatic Symptom Disorder-Ecological Momentary Assessment from the SOMA.SSD Study.

PURPOSE: Symptom expectations are considered contributing mechanisms for underlying persistent somatic symptoms in somatic symptom disorder. Expectation framing has been suggested as a promising technique to modify expectations. However, the short-term interplay between symptom expectations, expectation framing, and symptom severity in patients with somatic symptom disorder remains unexplored. METHODS: In this study, 217 patients with somatic symptom disorder participated in a 10-day smartphone-based ecological momentary assessment. Participants were randomized to one of two expectation frami

GM1-gangliosidosis: The caregivers' assessments of symptom impact and most important symptoms to treat.

GM1-gangliosidosis (GM1) is a rare neurodegenerative disorder leading to early mortality and causing progressive decline of physical skills and cerebral functioning. No approved treatment for GM1 exists. In this study-the first to explore priorities of parents of subjects with pediatric onset forms of GM1-we address a crucial gap by characterizing symptoms most critical to caregivers of children with GM1 to treat. Our two-part, mixed-methods approach began with focus groups, followed by interviews with a distinct set of parents. Interviews included a prioritization activity that used best-wors

Assessment of the Edmonton Symptom Assessment System depression item accuracy for classifying depression severity in individuals with cancer and pain.

Depression is prevalent in individuals with cancer-related pain, impacting quality of life and survival. The Edmonton Symptom Assessment System (ESAS) includes a single depression item (ESAS-D) used to screen for depressive symptoms in this population. While promising for detecting Major Depressive Disorder (MDD) in those with cancer-related pain, its ability to assess depression severity remains unclear. The Montgomery–Asberg Depression Rating Scale (MADRS) is a standard tool used by trained clinicians to assess depression severity and is used to classify individuals as having none, mild, mod

Symptom patterns and subgrouping of schizophrenic patients: significance of negative symptoms assessed on admission.

This study subgroups schizophrenic patients based on symptoms assessed on admission and examines the validity of the subgrouping using follow-up data and other clinical outcome variables. Schizophrenic patients (n=163) from consecutive admission received ratings on the positive and negative syndrome scale (PANSS) on admission and during a 1-year follow-up course. An exploratory graphic analysis on the admission PANSS derived four symptom dimensions: negative symptoms, disorganized thought, hostility/excitement and delusions/hallucinations. This yielded two subgroups of patients on admission, a

Symptom and quality of life assessment during season undergoing pollen immunotherapy: single center study.

BACKGROUND: Allergic rhinitis (AR) is an IgE-mediated inflammatory condition of the nasal mucosa. Allergen immunotherapy (AIT) is the only treatment that can modify disease progression and provide long-term symptom control. This study evaluated symptom burden and health-related quality of life (HRQoL) during the pollen season in pediatric patients treated with subcutaneous pollen immunotherapy (SCIT). MATERIAL AND METHODS: This prospective, cross-sectional study included children aged 6-18 years who received ≥12 months of AIT between 2014 and 2022. All had isolated pollen allergy and were tre

[Symptom burden in chronic kidney disease-nephrological assessment compared to patients' perspectives (SOMA.CK study)].

BACKGROUND: Individuals with nondialysis chronic kidney disease (ND-CKD) often report high somatic symptom burden, though traditional clinical approaches associate symptom burden only with advanced disease stages. OBJECTIVES: This study compared the symptom burden in ND-CKD as perceived by physicians and patients. MATERIALS AND METHODS: In a German-wide online survey, nephrologists identified the three most common symptoms and the mean symptom burden in CKD using an adapted version of the Chronic Kidney Disease Symptom Burden Index (CKD-SBI). Their assessments were compared with patients' se

Relationship between symptom assessment and cardiopulmonary exercise testing in patients with obstructive hypertrophic cardiomyopathy.

INTRODUCTION: In obstructive hypertrophic cardiomyopathy (oHCM), peak oxygen consumption (pVO2) by cardiopulmonary exercise testing (CPET) and patient-reported outcomes with Kansas City Cardiomyopathy Questionnaire (KCCQ), are increasingly utilized to assess efficacy in clinical trials. However, in clinical practice, treatments have historically been based on physician assessment of symptoms with New York Heart Association (NYHA) classification. We aimed to evaluate relationship between NYHA classification, pVO2 and KCCQ in oHCM. METHODS: Consecutive patients with oHCM undergoing CPET and KCC

Comprehensive Symptom Assessment of Patients With End-Stage Heart Failure Referred to Palliative Care.

BACKGROUND: Patients with end-stage heart failure experience a significant symptom burden that is often poorly controlled. Although palliative care can improve symptom management and reduce hospital admissions, many patients still die in acute care settings. The unpredictable course of end-stage heart failure complicates the identification of patients who would benefit from early palliative care referral. To address this challenge, an integrated cardiac supportive care service was developed to engage these patients early, optimise symptom control, and ensure timely access to palliative care.

Insights into endometriosis symptom trajectories and assessment of surgical intervention outcomes using longitudinal actigraphy.

Endometriosis is a common, chronic condition associated with debilitating pain, fatigue, and heterogeneous symptom presentation. In this exploratory study, 68 participants with confirmed endometriosis were monitored for up to three 4-6-week smartwatch cycles. We collected daily self-reports of pain and fatigue as well as retrospective questionnaires assessing quality of life, and we extracted daily measures of physical activity (PA), sleep, and diurnal rhythms from wrist-worn actigraphy data. We found that daily PA was strongly negatively correlated with self-reported fatigue (repeated measure
