[Auditory phenomena as differential diagnostics to tinnitus].

INTRODUCTION: In the auditory system, subjective tinnitus is known as phantom perception. Humans also report illusionary misperceptions of real listening impressions and complex scene-like acoustic fantasies without external hearing stimulus. The exact pathophysiological relationships of the auditory phenomena are still unclear. Important comorbidities include hearing loss, brain disease and mental disorders. METHODS: In a literature search in the PubMed database, publications were evaluated until March 2021 on the search terms tinnitus, palinacousis, pareidolia, synesthesia, aura, acoustic h

The relationship between mirror-touch synaesthesia and empathy: New evidence and a new screening tool.

People with mirror-touch synaesthesia (MTS) report tactile sensations on their own body when seeing another person being touched. Although this has been associated with heightened empathy and emotion perception, this finding has been disputed. Here, we conduct two experiments to explore this relationship further. In Experiment 1, we develop a new screening measure for MTS. We show that MTS is related to vicarious experiences more generally, but is not a simple exaggerated version of normality. For example, people with MTS report videos of scratching as "touch" rather than "itchiness" and have

Aphantasia: The science of visual imagery extremes.

Visual imagery allows us to revisit the appearance of things in their absence and to test out virtual combinations of sensory experience. Visual imagery has been linked to many cognitive processes, such as autobiographical and visual working memory. Imagery also plays symptomatic and mechanistic roles in neurologic and mental disorders and is utilized in treatment. A large network of brain activity spanning frontal, parietal, temporal, and visual cortex is involved in generating and maintain images in mind. The ability to visualize has extreme variations, ranging from completely absent (aphant

Feeling sounds after a thalamic lesion.

OBJECTIVE: The ventrolateral nucleus of the thalamus (VL), based on its connectivity with the cerebellum and motor cortex, has long been considered to be involved with motor functions. We show that the human VL also plays a prominent role in sensory processing. METHODS: Structural magnetic resonance imaging and diffusion tensor imaging were used to localize a small lesion restricted to the right VL in a patient with contralesional sensory processing deficits. Systematic assessments of anatomic brain organization and behavioral measurements of somatosensory and visual processing were conducted

Crossmodal synesthetic congruency improves visual timing in dyslexic children.

Consistent with the temporal ventriloquism effect, synesthetic correspondence between the features of visual size and auditory pitch has been shown to modulate the performance of visual temporal order judgment (TOJ) in typical adults. Here in the two main experiments we recruited seventeen dyslexic children and twenty typically developing children to perform a visual TOJ task and measured their ability of synesthetic correspondence between visual size and auditory pitch. In Experiment 1, participants were shown two consecutively presented visual discs that were temporally flanked by two synest

Phosphene Perception Relates to Visual Cortex Glutamate Levels and Covaries with Atypical Visuospatial Awareness.

Phosphenes are illusory visual percepts produced by the application of transcranial magnetic stimulation to occipital cortex. Phosphene thresholds, the minimum stimulation intensity required to reliably produce phosphenes, are widely used as an index of cortical excitability. However, the neural basis of phosphene thresholds and their relationship to individual differences in visual cognition are poorly understood. Here, we investigated the neurochemical basis of phosphene perception by measuring basal GABA and glutamate levels in primary visual cortex using magnetic resonance spectroscopy. We

Genetic and environmental contributions to the link between synaesthesia and neurodevelopmental and psychiatric features: a twin study.

Synaesthesia is a sensory phenomenon where specific inputs such as written letters or tastes automatically trigger additional sensations (for instance colours). The phenomenon is more common in people on the autism spectrum compared to the general population and seems also to be associated with other neurodevelopmental and psychiatric conditions and features. We assessed the associations between self-reported synaesthesia and eight psychiatric / neurodevelopment features in 18-year-old twins and estimated the genetic and environmental contributions to these associations using classical twin mo

Subtitled speech: the neural mechanisms of ticker-tape synaesthesia.

The acquisition of reading modifies areas of the brain associated with vision and with language, in addition to their connections. These changes enable reciprocal translation between orthography and the sounds and meaning of words. Individual variability in the pre-existing cerebral substrate contributes to the range of eventual reading abilities, extending to atypical developmental patterns, including dyslexia and reading-related synaesthesias. The present study is devoted to the little-studied but highly informative ticker-tape synaesthesia, in which speech perception triggers the vivid and

Development of synaesthetic consistency: Repeated autonomous engagement with graphemes and colours leads to consistent associations.

Synaesthetic consistency is the hallmark of synaesthesia and plays an important role in the definition and validation of synaesthesia. It has been hypothesised that the acquisition of initially unspecified synaesthetic associations is based on consolidation processes. Thus, we investigated in non-synaesthetes whether repeatedly engaging with grapheme-colour associations mimics the developmental trajectory of synaesthetic consistency in genuine grapheme-colour synaesthesia. This was the case for the two tested experimental groups, irrespective of whether they were instructed to memorize their c

Electrophysiological correlates and psychoacoustic characteristics of hearing-motion synaesthesia.

People with hearing-motion synaesthesia experience sounds from moving or changing (e.g. flickering) visual stimuli. This phenomenon may be one of the most common forms of synaesthesia but it has rarely been studied and there are no studies of its neural basis. We screened for this in a sample of 200+ individuals, and estimated a prevalence of 4.2%. We also document its characteristics: it tends to be induced by physically moving stimuli (more so than static stimuli which imply motion or trigger illusory motion); and the psychoacoustic features are simple (e.g. "whooshing") with some systematic

Atypical cortical regional homogeneity observed in grapheme-colour synaesthesia and its subtypes.

Grapheme-colour synaesthesia is a phenomenon where individuals associate specific graphemes with particular colours, with two common subtypes: projector and associator. This study investigates the association between resting-state regional homogeneity (ReHo) and projector- and associator-type synaesthesia, and the behavioural significance of these ReHo abnormalities. 75 synaesthetes with varying projector and associator scores completed a diverse range of psychological measures and underwent resting-state functional MRI (rsfMRI) scans. Cortical ReHo images were extracted from preprocessed rsfM

Migraine trait symptoms in migraine with and without aura.

OBJECTIVES: The aim of the study was to determine whether various transient sensory and neuropsychological symptoms (SNS) were associated with migraine using a custom questionnaire. METHODS: In this hypothesis-generating case-control study, the frequencies of transient SNS in 219 patients with migraine (149 without aura and 70 with aura) were compared with 161 age- and sex-matched healthy controls using a custom questionnaire. Patients from a tertiary academic headache center in Hamburg were contacted by regular mail. Healthy controls without a history of migraine were recruited by means of a

Spatial cueing in time-space synesthetes: An event-related brain potential study.

Some people report that they consistently and involuntarily associate time events, such as months of the year, with specific spatial locations; a condition referred to as time-space synesthesia. The present study investigated the manner in which such synesthetic time-space associations affect visuo-spatial attention via an endogenous cuing paradigm. Reaction times and ERPs were recorded as 12 time-space synesthetes and 12 control participants did a peripheral target detection task, cued by three different types of centrally presented cues: arrows pointing left or right, direction words "left"

Synaesthesia or vivid imagery? A single case fMRI study of visually induced olfactory perception.

The most common form of synaesthesia is grapheme-colour synaesthesia. However, rarer forms of synaesthesia also exist, such as word-gustatory and olfactory-gustatory synaesthesia, whereby a word or smell will induce a specific. In this study we describe a single individual (LJ) who experiences a concurrent olfactory stimulus when presented with congruent visual images. For some visual stimuli, he perceives a strong and automatic olfactory percept, which has existed throughout his life. In this study, we explore whether his experiences are a new form of synaesthesia or simply vivid imagery. Unl

Modern Clinical Research on LSD.

All modern clinical studies using the classic hallucinogen lysergic acid diethylamide (LSD) in healthy subjects or patients in the last 25 years are reviewed herein. There were five recent studies in healthy participants and one in patients. In a controlled setting, LSD acutely induced bliss, audiovisual synesthesia, altered meaning of perceptions, derealization, depersonalization, and mystical experiences. These subjective effects of LSD were mediated by the 5-HT2A receptor. LSD increased feelings of closeness to others, openness, trust, and suggestibility. LSD impaired the recognition of sad

Death due to consumption of ibogaine: case report.

Ibogaine is a psychotropic indole alkaloid extracted from the roots of the Tabernanthe iboga shrub from the Apocynaceae family. Depending on the taken dose, it can lead to stimulant effects, euphoria, visual and auditory hallucinations, along with auditory, olfactory, and gustatory synesthesia. In addition to its historical usage in spiritual rituals of African tribes, these days iboga extract presents a prohibited, alternative drug widely used as a part of addiction treatment. Ibogaine used in opioid withdrawal is associated with serious side effects and sudden deaths. Besides its main use as
