Unilateral coronal synostosis (UCS) produces overt craniofacial dysmorphology. UCS surgery in infancy aims to release the osseous restriction and normalize the fronto-orbital deformity. The quantitative effect of this surgery on the orbit and its contents is unknown. This study was conducted to quantify the preoperative orbital dysmorphology and its surgical outcome in patients with unilateral coronal synostosis. Twenty-eight UCS patients had preoperative three-dimensional computerized tomographic (CT) scans (at mean age 4.0 months), cranio-orbital reconstructive surgery (at 4.7 months), and p

Premature fusion of all major cranial and facial sutures, termed pancraniofacial synostosis by us, was first described as "Kleeblattschädel deformity," but can also be found in anomalies such as Crouzon's disease, Apert's syndrome, Pfeiffer's syndrome, and severe forms of plagiocephaly. This rare craniofacial anomaly often presents an immediate threat to life right after birth. Early subtotal craniectomy frequently combined with frontoorbitofacial advancement must be performed to decrease intracranial pressure, preserve vision, and open up the blocked upper airway. Concomitant hydrocephaly is

Until recently the problem of painful, symptomatic arthritis of the wrist secondary to congenitally incomplete separation of carpal bones has been infrequently recognized. Five patients with either excessive stress loading or trauma had eight symptomatic wrists with congenitally incomplete separation of the triquetral-lunate joint. Three of these patients had bilateral symptoms. Six of the wrists had been treated by a limited wrist arthrodesis of the triquetral-lunate joint resulting in asymptomatic wrists and improved range of motion. It appears that patients with this congenital condition po

The posttraumatic synostosis between radius and ulna is one of a rare but grave complication in case of forearm-fracture. Only a few successful treated case-reports are described. This case reports upon a young man with a second-degree open elbow-joint-debris-fracture. Following a proximal radio-ulnar-synostosis happened. Eight months posttraumatic the radio-ulnar-synostosis was operatively eliminated. Subsequent an intermediate dura-cuff was implanted after partial resection of the membrana interossea.

Cranio-facial principles have been applied to the treatment of craniosynostosis by the senior author since 1973, and original techniques have been developed for the treatment of oxycephaly, trigonocephaly, plagiocephaly brachycephaly and scaphocephaly; 156 patients have been operated upon. There is now enough follow-up material to establish that the good morphological results obtained initially are maintained through growth, and that there is a definite improvement in affected facial structures when early correction has been performed. The functional results have also been very satisfactory an

The results of an operative approach to the problem of radio-ulnar synostosis were assessed in thirteen patients, ten to twenty-five and one-half years after the procedure was performed. We concluded that in a patient with bilateral synostosis one hand, the one not used in writing, should be shifted to a position of 20 to 35 degrees of supination. With one hand in this position, the other may be left in considerable pronation. Often after such a shift it is not necessary to rotate the second arm. However, if the pronation is marked in the second forearm, and if function is impaired unduly by t

This study aims to characterize the clinical manifestations of isolated squamosal synostosis (ISS) and review the relevant published literature. Computed tomography imaging from 2008 to 2022 was reviewed to identify patients with ISS. Patients were reviewed for age at presentation, signs of intracranial pressure, and management. A systematic review was conducted of all studies on ISS from 1990 to 2023. Eighteen patients from our institution were included. Three unilateral cases were diagnosed at 1.4 ± 0.6 years. None had signs of intracranial hypertension nor required surgery. Of the 15 bilate

Sagittal craniosynostosis is the most common of all craniosynostoses. Patients with sagittal craniosynostosis exhibit a typical cranial appearance, including scaphocephaly, and an elongated head, with a fused and ridged sagittal suture. Moreover, some recent reports described atypical sagittal craniosynostosis accompanied by autism, speech delay, and hyperactivity. This condition, known as delayed-onset craniosynostosis, is rarely reported, given that it is difficult to determine if the condition is congenital or has a delayed-onset.This report describes the clinical course and treatment of 2

BACKGROUND: This study investigates the relationship between headache and the occurrence of signs associated with intracranial hypertension such as ophthalmic signs, restricted skull growth, and a vertex bulge in children who were operated on for sagittal synostosis.
METHODS: A total of 94 patients (aged 6 to 18 years) with sagittal synostosis were asked to indicate their headache frequency. Based on their age at referral, the patients had undergone either frontobiparietal remodeling or an extended strip craniotomy. Data on funduscopy, optical coherence tomography, occipitofrontal head circum

PURPOSE: Endoscopic treatment of nonsyndromic craniosynostosis has been used in recent decades. The aim of this study is to present the results of endoscope-assisted surgery of the patients with metopic synostosis.
METHODS: Nineteen patients with metopic synostosis underwent endoscope-assisted surgery between 2005 and 2012. The frontal angle was measured on CT scans pre- and postoperatively. A midline strip craniectomy was made, making sure that the removal extended inferiorly to the nasofrontal suture. Postoperatively, all patients wear a custom molding helmet. The helmet was then worn for 2

BACKGROUND: Orbital dysmorphology is believed to cause ipsilateral ocular abnormalities in unicoronal synostosis. Recently, there has been increasing evidence of visual problems in the contralateral eye. The purpose of this study was to explore morphology of both the ipsilateral and contralateral unicoronal synostosis orbit.
METHODS: Demographic data and computed tomographic information were recorded. Three-dimensional computed tomographic renderings were created digitally and analyzed (SurgiCase). Craniometric analysis was conducted for orbital volume, horizontal and vertical orbital cone an

SUBJECT: The number of plagiocephalies without synostosis (PWS) strongly increased in the last decade. Its impact on the mandible remains badly understood, the more so as there are various forms of PSS. The purpose of this study was to analyze mandible deformation according to the deformation of PWS.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: The study was carried out retrospectively starting from three-dimensional scans of children presenting with a PWS. They were classified in 2 groups according to the deformation of the cranium. There were 51 frontal plagiocephalies (PF) and 19 occipital plagiocephalies (PO) f

This report describes a newborn boy with Antley-Bixler (AB) syndrome. AB syndrome is a rare disorder characterized mainly by craniosynostosis and multiple joint contractures including radiohumeral synostosis. Our patient differs from the usual presentation by the presence of radioulnar rather than a radiohumeral synostosis. In addition, the child had a FGFR1 1300T mutation, which has not previously been associated with AB syndrome. Thus, our patient presents unique features and represents another argument in favour of an AB-like spectrum rather than a single syndrome.

Spondylocarpotarsal synostosis syndrome is a recently delineated autosomal recessive condition comprising short stature with short trunk, failure of normal spine segmentation resulting in block vertebrae and fusion of posterior elements, carpal and/or tarsal coalition, scoliosis, lordosis, pes planus, dental enamel hypoplasia, decreased range of motion or dislocation of the elbow, renal anomalies, and hearing loss. The vertebral segmentation defects may involve noncontiguous areas of the cervical, thoracic, and lumbar spine. Odontoid hypoplasia was noted in two cases. We report on a sporadic c

We report on 2 families with multiple members who have proven or suspected lambdoid craniosynostosis. In one family the lambdoid suture was unilaterally involved in one sib, and bilaterally in the other. In the second family the propositus had unilateral lambdoid synostosis and his twin sisters each had bilateral lambdoid synostosis. Both families had another distant relative, a maternal grandmother in the first and paternal uncle in the second, who were also reported to have posterior plagiocephaly. We report these families as evidence for genetic transmission of a craniosynostotic trait whic

Premature fusion of the metopic suture is an uncommon form of craniosynostosis, historically reported with an incidence of less than 10% among the various forms of craniosynostoses. Despite its infrequency, it is the most obvious deformity associated with premature fusion of a single suture with its prominent frontal keel, narrow forehead, and close-set eyes. This article discusses the timing, long-term results, and recent advances of surgical techniques.

Analysis of intermediate- and long-term results of surgical treatment of metopic synostosis is lacking. We therefore retrospectively studied 23 patients with metopic synostosis (14 males, 9 females) who have been followed from 3 months to 8.1 years (mean 42.5 months) after operation. Age at first operation ranged from 2 to 56 months (mean 8.2 months), with 15 patients operated on before 6 months and 8 after 7 months. Fronto-orbital remodeling and calvarial vault reshaping with floating forehead techniques were carried out in all patients. Stabilization of bony segments was accomplished with mi

Distinct osseous structural differences exist between patients with unilateral coronal synostosis and those with "deformational plagiocephaly." Patients with unilateral coronal synostosis exhibit significant anterior displacement of the infraorbital rim relative to the ipsilateral frontal bone and contralateral infraorbital rim (p less than 0.005). Patients with deformational plagiocephaly are noted to have retrusion of the frontal bone and infraorbital rim on the involved side. The observed differences, documented utilizing computerized tomography, are easily appreciated on clinical examinati

Immobilization of the coronal suture was produced unilaterally in 9-day-old rabbits to determine its effect on subsequent craniofacial development. The suture was immobilized unilaterally by the topical application of methylcyanoacrylate adhesive. Subsequent growth effects on the cranial vault, base, and facial skeleton were assessed by serial radiographic cephalometry. Unilateral coronal suture immobilization resulted in significantly decreased bone growth at the coronal suture (mean 0.95 mm +/- 0.35 SE) when compared to sham-treated control animals (mean 5.06 mm +/- 0.20 SE). High resolution, thin slice computerized tomography (CT) scans with paraxial and three-dimensional surface reconstructions were utilized to document the endocranial, exocranial, and orbital anatomy of non-syndromal unicoronal synostosis (UCS). Eighteen patients with UCS were evaluated qualitatively and quantitatively. Of these, 10 were studied both preoperatively and 1 year postoperatively. The endocranial base in UCS is characterized by a 9 degree angulation toward the synostosis of the anterior cranial base with respect to the posterior cranial base. The exocranial base has a 7 degree angula
