BACKGROUND: Synovial cysts are most commonly found in the lumbar spine and are associated with low back pain and radiculopathy. Frequent use of imaging modalities has led to an increase in intraspinal synovial cyst identification. Treatment typically ranges from conservative measures to surgical decompression, but spontaneous resolution has previously been reported. Here, we present the first report of symptomatic lumbar synovial cyst resolution after a traumatic fall.
CASE DESCRIPTION: We present a case of a symptomatic synovial cyst between the fourth (L4) and fifth (L5) lumbar vertebrae id

We present the case of a 28-year-old competitive runner with iliotibial band (ITB) friction syndrome associated with a synovial cyst. Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) did not demonstrate a fluid collection. However, open exploration revealed a large cyst beneath the ITB arising from the capsule of the knee proximal to the lateral meniscus. The cyst disappeared on extension. The pre-operative MRI scan may have revealed the cyst, if it had been taken with the knee flexed.

Metaplastic synovial cyst is a recently reorganized entity characterized by a cystic space lined by polygonal cells and villous structures resembling synovium pointing toward the lumen. It usually develops following trauma. We report a 15-year-old girl with Ehlers-Danlos syndrome who developed a nodular lesion of her elbow without previous trauma. Histopathological and immunohistochemical studies yielded results similar to those reported in cases of cutaneous metaplastic synovial cyst. This case appears to be the first one reported of cutaneous metaplastic synovial cyst associated with an Ehle

A 50-year-old woman presented with mid-thoracic back pain that radiated to the left rib cage in a radicular manner. Magnetic resonance imaging revealed an extradural mass compressing the left T9 nerve root. The mass was adjacent to a degenerated T9-10 facet joint with an enhancing low signal intensity rim. Recognition of the characteristic imaging findings of an intraspinal synovial cyst resulted in the correct preoperative diagnosis despite the unusual location of this lesion at T9-10.

A spinal synovial cyst at L2-L3 produced obstruction at myelography and simulated an intraspinal tumor on CT. The CT recognition of bilateral spondylolysis of L3 suggested the possibility of a mobile posterior arch of L3 and associated synovial herniation. This was verified at surgery.

The authors report a case of an intraneural ganglion of the peroneal nerve. The cystic material was found to expand the neural sheath, while the neural fasciculi were few and atrophic. A communication between the intraneural cyst and the proximal tibio-peroneal joint was demonstrated. An hypothesis for the pathogenetic basis of intraneural ganglia is presented.

INTRODUCTION: Spinal synovial cysts (SC) are often associated with facet joint effusion (FJE). However, there is a paucity of information in the literature regarding their relationship. The main objective of this study was to explore the association between FJE and lumbar SC.
METHODS: We retrospectively analyzed lumbar SC cases. FJE was identified and measured based on T2W magnetic resonance imaging, axial sections. Various aspects of association between lumbar SC and FJE were analyzed.
RESULTS: A total of 153 lumbar SC cases and 306 facet joints were evaluated with FJE measurement. The mean

Intraspinal synovial cysts are infrequent causes of back and radicular leg pain. Commonly associated with degenerative spinal disease, the majority of synovial cysts appear in the lumbar spine. Rarely, intracystic hemorrhage can occur through an unclear mechanism. Similarly rare, cysts may also become migratory. The pathogenesis of hemorrhagic synovial cysts remains uncertain and their potential for migration also remains unclear. A 36 year-old male presented to the clinic with 5 months of back pain and leg pain that began after a work-related injury. An initial MRI obtained by another surgeon

BACKGROUND: Intraspinal synovial cysts of vertebral facet joints are uncommon cause of radicular pain as well as neurological deficits. They can be managed both conservatively and surgically.
CASE REPORT: A 77-year old polymorbid patient presented with bilateral low back pain which worsened during the course of time and did not respond to the conservative treatment. A diagnosis of intraspinal synovial cyst was made using the magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). Percutaneous computed tomography (CT) guided injection with installation of local anesthetic together with corticosteroid and rupture of

Synovial cysts, typically observed in the lumbar spine eventually associated with degenerative changes of the facet joints, only rarely present in the cervical spine. Up to now, only 28 symptomatic cases are described in literature. Typically, the treatment of these cases is a decompressive laminectomy followed by complete surgical removal of the lesion. The authors present the case of an 84-year-old man with a symptomatic synovial cyst involving the space between C7 and T1.

Synovial cysts of the cervical spine occur infrequently in the spinal canal and are most often associated with degenerative facet joints. Despite the prevalence of degenerative spinal disease, symptomatic synovial cysts are extremely uncommon. We report a rare case that showed an exacerbation of a cervical radiculopathy due to an acute expansion of the synovial cyst. Magnetic resonance (MR) images originally revealed a small cystic extradural lesion when the patient presented with neck pain and slightly numbness in the right hand. The patient's complaints subsequently subsided after administra

OBJECTIVE: To give a reference for the early diagnosis and treatment of the cysts arising from the temporomandibular joint.
METHODS: Nine patients finally diagnosed as temporomandibular joint cysts at the Peking University Hospital of Stomatology from May 1998 to August 2013 were selected and reviewed. Their clinical manifestations, imaging features, diagnoses and differential diagnoses, treatments and follow-ups were summarized and discussed.
RESULTS: In the 9 patients, 3 were males and 6 females. Their ages ranged from 33 to 62 years with a median age of 39 years; the course of the disease

BACKGROUND: Synovial cysts with extensive hemorrhage, marked mass effect, and tumor-like appearance are rare and may mimic neoplastic processes.
OBSERVATIONS: A 56-year-old man presented with progressive mechanical low back pain, neurogenic claudication, gait instability, and bilateral weakness. MRI revealed a 2.0-cm lesion arising from the right L3 facet joint, causing severe central canal and right foraminal stenosis with displacement of the cauda equina. Imaging features suggested pigmented villonodular synovitis. Intraoperatively, however, the lesion appeared fleshy, partially encapsulate

BACKGROUND: A synovial cyst is a herniation of synovial tissue through a joint capsule, often mistaken for a ganglion cyst. The key distinctions are that synovial cysts have a synovial cell lining, while a ganglion cyst is delineated by dense fibrous connective tissue. Typically found near joints, synovial cysts are associated with conditions like osteoarthritis, prevalent in females aged 20 to 50. We present a rare case of a synovial cyst in the extensor digitorum superficialis of the right hand.

BackgroundSpinal dural arteriovenous fistula is the most common spinal vascular malformation. It usually presents with neurological deficits due to venous congestive myelopathy. Sometimes, however, the symptoms are radicular and can imitate those of a disc hernia or synovial cyst.ObservationsIn this illustrated case, a 34-year-old male patient presented with radicular pain due to nerve root compression. In the magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) examination of the spine, a synovial cyst was suspected, so the patient underwent no further examination before surgery. Intraoperatively, the authors we

BACKGROUND: Intradural synovial cysts of the cervical spine represent a rare disease entity, causing stenosis of the spinal canal and thereby leading to progressive myelopathy. In particular, at the cranio-cervical junction early intervention is necessary to prevent permanent neurological dysfunction. We present the case of a 74-year-old man who presented with moderate cervicogenic headache, gait disturbance and progressive left-sided weakness. Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) of the cervical spine confirmed a left-sided cystic mass located anteriorly at the craniovertebral junction compressin

The use of bone-patellar tendon-bone allograft or autograft in anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) reconstruction is an accepted method of repair of the ACL-deficient knee with few complications. We report an unusual complication associated with this technique, the development of synovial fistula and cyst associated with the use of nonabsorbable suture material.
