IMPORTANCE: Numerous Black individuals experience racism persistently throughout their lives, with repercussions extending into health care settings. The perspectives of Black individuals regarding emergency department (ED) care, racism, and patient-centered approaches for dismantling structural racism remain less explored.
OBJECTIVE: To qualitatively explore the perspectives and experiences of Black patients related to race, racism, and health care following a recent ED visit.
DESIGN, SETTING, AND PARTICIPANTS: In this qualitative study, the audio from semistructured interviews of Black pat

Communities of color and poor neighborhoods are disproportionately exposed to more air pollution-a pattern known as environmental injustices. Environmental injustices increase susceptibility to negative health outcomes among residents in affected communities. The structural mechanisms distributing environmental injustices in the USA are understudied. Bridging the literatures on the social determinants of health and environmental justice highlights the importance of the environmental conditions for health inequalities and sheds light on the institutional mechanisms driving environmental health

Psychotic disorders (e.g., schizophrenia, schizoaffective disorder) are a leading cause of morbidity and premature mortality and an overlooked health inequity in the United States. European data indicate inequities in incidence, severity, and treatment of psychotic disorders, particularly for Black communities, that appear to be primarily attributable to social adversities. The dominant US narrative is that any observed differences are primarily a result of clinician bias and misdiagnosis. We propose that employing the framework of structural racism will prompt European and US research to conv

Nia is a first-grade student with a history of trauma who was brought in by ambulance to the pediatric emergency department for "out of control behavior" at school. This is the first of multiple presentations to the emergency department for psychiatric evaluation, stabilization, and management throughout her elementary and middle school years. Several of the visits resulted in admission to the inpatient pediatric service, where she "boarded" while awaiting transfer to an inpatient psychiatric facility. At times, clinical teams used involuntary emergency medications and physical restraints, as

BACKGROUND: Non-Hispanic Black Iowans have substantially higher incidence of and mortality from cancer than their non-Hispanic White (NHW) counterparts in all but the oldest age groups; rates are particularly high in Black Hawk County, which contains the city of Waterloo, a highly segregated city with a documented history of redlining and distinct racial differences in the social drivers of health.
OBJECTIVE: To gather perspectives on race, racism, healthcare, and engagement with cancer prevention and control behaviors, among Black individuals living in Black Hawk County, Iowa.

BACKGROUND: In the United Kingdom (UK), individuals of minoritized ethnic groups report poorer healthcare experiences and face disparities in health outcomes and access to healthcare services relative to their White counterparts. While it has been demonstrated that sociodemographic characteristics play important roles in the risk of developing rheumatic diseases, disease progression, and treatment journeys, there is limited understanding of the experiences of minoritized ethnic groups in the UK. This study aimed to investigate how the social and structural processes associated with ethnicity a

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: This review aims to discuss racial and ethnic differences in the prevalence of hypertensive disorders of pregnancy (HDP), disparities in peripartum and postpartum outcomes, and strategies to improve health equity.
RECENT FINDINGS: Racial disparities in HDP are significant contributors to maternal morbidity and mortality. The prevalence of preeclampsia has increased over the last 20 years, with the highest prevalence among non-Hispanic Black, non-Hispanic American Indian and Alaska Native individuals. Black birthing individuals are at increased risk for cardiovascular-relate

OBJECTIVE: Experiences of racism have been linked to increased race-based traumatic stress symptoms. However, studies in this area have not focused solely on Chinese individuals in North America, such as those in the United States and Canada. Furthermore, little is known about protective factors that may buffer the adverse impact of racism on race-based traumatic stress symptoms. Addressing these limitations, this study examined (a) the relationship between racism and race-based traumatic stress symptoms and (b) the protective role of both individual and collective resilience in the associatio

Racial and ethnic discrimination persist in science, technology, engineering and mathematics fields, including ecology, evolution and conservation biology (EECB) and related disciplines. Marginalization and oppression as a result of institutional and structural racism continue to create barriers to inclusion for Black people, Indigenous people and people of colour (BIPOC), and remnants of historic racist policies and pseudoscientific theories continue to plague these fields. Many academic EECB departments seek concrete ways to improve the climate and implement anti-racist policies in their tea

AIMS: This study aimed to explore the experiences of Māori dietitians and students in Aotearoa New Zealand, with a focus on how racism, marginalism and tokenism affect their training, workplaces and wellbeing.
METHODS: A kaupapa Māori community research approach was undertaken in partnership with Te Kāhui Manukura o Kai Ora (Māori Dietitians Association). A focus group was held with Māori dietitians and students in March 2024. Data were analysed using reflexive thematic analysis, guided by kaupapa Māori research principles. Candidate themes were then shared with participants in March 2025, an

INTRODUCTION: Racism is recognised as a concern within humanitarian and development (HD) organisations, yet little research has examined its implications for staff mental health. Notably, the perspectives of in-house mental health professionals (MHPs)-a key but understudied group-have remained absent from the literature. This study addresses this gap by asking three questions: First, how do MHPs perceive and personally experience racism within HD organisations? Second, in what ways does racism affect the mental health of staff, and how do MHPs navigate their role in addressing these impacts? T

The pervasive nature of racism at interpersonal and structural levels remains a significant public health threat, as it contributes to adverse mental and behavioral health outcomes. The biopsychosocial model of racism underscores physiological, cognitive, and emotional mechanisms that influence health outcomes; however, less is known about the distinct mechanisms through which experiences of racism shape health outcomes among Black and Latine individuals who face cumulative disadvantage because of criminal legal system involvement. Black and Latine participants (N = 828; justice involved, n =

Racism continues to plague Western societies' institutions, including the healthcare system. Despite the evidence of racism's negative impacts on healthcare providers, administrators, patients, and families, healthcare workers report hesitancy in taking action to address racism in the workplace. Simulation, with its experiential pedagogy and foundation in psychological safety, may be an educational tool to support practical training. Guided by a social cognitive view of regulation of learning, we piloted virtual reality (VR) modules focused on addressing bias, privilege, and microaggressions.

Every year, hundreds of thousands of youth across the country enter the juvenile legal system. A significantly disproportionate number of them are youth of color. While youth arrests have declined over the past several decades, racial disparities have increased and persist at every stage of the system. Many youth of color enter the juvenile legal system with a history of trauma and stress that compromises their health and well-being. Arrest, prosecution, and incarceration exacerbate these poor health outcomes. This paper examines several of the health impacts of structural racism in the polici

Cranial neural crest cells (CNCs) play a critical role in craniofacial bone morphogenesis, engaging in intricate interactions with various molecular signals to ensure proper development, yet the molecular scaffolds coordinating these processes remain incompletely defined. Here, we identify neurofibromin 2 (Nf2) as a critical regulator to direct CNC-derived skull morphogenesis. Genetic ablation of Nf2 in murine CNCs causes severe craniofacial anomalies, featuring declined proliferation and increased apoptosis in osteoprogenitors, impaired type I collagen biosynthesis and trafficking, and aberra

Racism functions as a system of continued devaluation, disempowerment, and inequitable allotment driven by racial hierarchy. Operating at multiple levels - individual, interpersonal, community, and societal - racism perpetuates significant mental and physical health disparities. Though evidence evinces the impact of racism across domains, few studies have assessed factors rooted in structural racism simultaneously and how they relate together to predict outcomes. The current study examines how racism impacts the mental health (MH) of Black Americans adults across multiple levels. Risk and prot

OBJECTIVE: We examined the association between county-level structural racism indicators and the odds of severe maternal morbidity (SMM) in New York State.
DESIGN: We merged individual-level hospitalization data from the New York State Department of Health Statewide Planning and Research Cooperative System (SPARCS) with county-level data from the American Community Survey and the Vera Institute of Justice from 2011 to 2013 (n = 244 854). Structural racism in each county included in our sample was constructed as the racial inequity (ratio of black to white population) in female educational att

OBJECTIVES: Indigenous peoples have a disproportionately high prevalence of incarceration in the Canadian justice system. However, there is limited Indigenous-driven research examining colonialism and the justice system, specifically associations between racism, externally imposed family disruptions, and history of ever being incarcerated. Therefore, this study examined the association between the proportion of previous incarceration and family disruption, experiences of racism, and victimization for Indigenous adults in London, Thunder Bay, and Toronto, Ontario, Canada. The three communities

BACKGROUND: Black children in the US with ESKD experience higher mortality, lower transplant rates, and longer time on dialysis than other children. Prior research on health disparities in adult kidney patients often emphasizes patient-level psychosocial factors, yet little is known about how providers understand these inequities for children. This study explored pediatric dialysis and transplant social workers' explanations for racial disparities affecting US black children in kidney transplant access.
METHODS: Semi-structured interviews were conducted with 16 pediatric dialysis and transpla

Racial discrimination is one of the most disruptive and psychologically damaging experiences that ethnoracially minoritized youth encounter. Research resoundly indicates that such discriminatory experiences can evoke trauma-like responses that can endure across development. However, literature documenting the traumatic implications of racial discrimination among youth remains limited by significant gaps that constrain understanding of the developmental significance and impact of this association. To this end, the current article aims to provide perspectives on avenues of future research needed
