Taenia solium cysticercosis in West Africa: status update.

Cysticercosis is caused by the larvae of the cestode Taenia solium. Few data are available on the prevalence of this disease in pigs and humans in West African countries. The aim of this study was to provide an overview of existing data concerning the spread of this parasitosis in the countries of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) on the basis of the literature published over the last five decades. Systematic searches for publications were carried out on PubMed and Google Scholar, as well as in certain regional and local journals. From a total of 501 articles initially ret

[Acute intestinal bleeding due to Taenia solium infection].

Parasite infections of the digestive tract are a rare cause of acute haemorrhage in Western countries. We report here on a case of acute intestinal bleeding due to Taenia solium infection diagnosed at surgery. A 79-year-old white female patient was admitted to our institution for instable angina and severe anaemia secondary to acute intestinal bleeding. The patient's medical history was positive for long-standing microcytic anaemia. A recent diagnostic work-up had revealed the presence of chronic erosive antral gastritis and colonic diverticular disease without acute bleeding. On admission to

TH2 profile in asymptomatic Taenia solium human neurocysticercosis.

Neurocysticercosis (NC), a parasitic disease caused by Taenia solium, may be either asymptomatic or have mild to severe symptoms due to several factors. In this study, the immunological factors that underlie NC pleomorphism were studied. Ten of the 132 inhabitants of a rural community in Mexico (Tepez) had a computerized tomography (CT) scan compatible with calcified NC, and all were asymptomatic. Their immunological profiles were compared with those of 122 CT scan negative (non-NC) subjects from the same village. NC was associated with a TH2 response (IgG4, IL-4, IL-5, IL-13). Subjects from T

Taenia solium ocular cysticercosis: findings in 30 cases.

We found the following results in 30 patients with intraocular cysticercosis: (1) a higher incidence in the first two decades of life compared with neurocysticercosis, (2) living cysticerci concomitant with inflammatory reactions, (3) diseases related to immune dysfunction in 17% of the cases, (4) anticysticercus antibodies in 57% of cases, (5) blindness in 81% of patients despite proper surgery, and (6) adult Taenia solium infection in a higher frequency of cases than expected for the Mexican population. We discuss these findings in light of recent and established knowledge regarding this dis

DNA vaccine against Taenia solium cysticercosis expressed as a modified hepatitis B virus core particle containing three epitopes shared by Taenia crassiceps and Taenia solium.

Many studies have provided evidence that the hepatitis B core antigen particle is useful as a vaccine carrier for foreign epitopes. Epitopes KETc1, KETc12, and GK-1 are three promising candidates for designing a vaccine against Taenia solium cysticercosis. In the present study, epitopes KETc1 and KETc12 were inserted into the immunodominant loop of the truncated HBc149, and epitope GK-1 was fused to its C-terminus. The fused protein deltaC-3n was expressed and purified successfully. The polymeric character was tested by SDS-PAGE. After inoculation of BALB/c mice with deltaC-3n, antibody titers

Effect of Transforming Growth Factor-β upon Taenia solium and Taenia crassiceps Cysticerci.

Taeniids exhibit a great adaptive plasticity, which facilitates their establishment, growth, and reproduction in a hostile inflammatory microenvironment. Transforming Growth Factor-β (TGFβ), a highly pleiotropic cytokine, plays a critical role in vertebrate morphogenesis, cell differentiation, reproduction, and immune suppression. TGFβ is secreted by host cells in sites lodging parasites. The role of TGFβ in the outcome of T. solium and T. crassiceps cysticercosis is herein explored. Homologues of the TGFβ family receptors (TsRI and TsRII) and several members of the TGFβ downstream signal tran

Zoonotic Taenia infections with focus on cysticercosis due to Taenia solium in swine and humans.

Zoonotic taeniasis caused by the adult stage of Taenia solium, Taenia saginata or Taenia asiatica are considered neglected tropical diseases by the World Health Organization. The life cycle of these 3 metazoan species is very similar and includes an intermediate host: pigs in the case of T. solium and T. asiatica, and cattle in the case of T. saginata. By eating meat (pork/T. solium, T. asiatica; beef/T. saginata) containing live cysticerci, humans develop taeniasis, which is practically asymptomatic but is the main risk factor for intermediate hosts to become infected. T. saginata causes bovi

Morphologic and genetic identification of Taenia tapeworms in Tanzania and DNA genotyping of Taenia solium.

Species identification of Taenia tapeworms was performed using morphologic observations and multiplex PCR and DNA sequencing of the mitochondrial cox1 gene. In 2008 and 2009, a total of 1,057 fecal samples were collected from residents of Kongwa district of Dodoma region, Tanzania, and examined microscopically for helminth eggs and proglottids. Of these, 4 Taenia egg positive cases were identified, and the eggs were subjected to DNA analysis. Several proglottids of Taenia solium were recovered from 1 of the 4 cases. This established that the species were T. solium (n = 1) and T. saginata (n =

Taenia solium Taeniasis and Cysticercosis in Southeast Asia.

Human taeniasis/cysticercosis caused by the pork tapeworm Taenia solium has been identified as a potentially eradicable disease by the International Task Force for Disease Eradication of the World Health Organization. In southeast Asia, T. solium taeniasis/cysticercosis is considered one of the major neglected tropical diseases afflicting the region. In the last few decades, a considerable effort has been invested toward establishing the epidemiology and burden of disease in several southeast Asian countries. Moreover, further evidence is emerging as to understanding the dynamics of disease tr

Immunology of Taenia solium taeniasis and human cysticercosis.

The life cycle of Taenia solium, the pork tapeworm, is continuously closed in many rural settings in developing countries when free roaming pigs ingest human stools containing T. solium eggs and develop cysticercosis, and humans ingest pork infected with cystic larvae and develop intestinal taeniasis, or may also accidentally acquire cysticercosis by faecal-oral contamination. Cysticercosis of the human nervous system, neurocysticercosis, is a major cause of seizures and other neurological morbidity in most of the world. The dynamics of exposure, infection and disease as well as the location o

Qualitative insights into behavioural risks for Taenia solium.

In low- or middle-income countries, neglected tropical diseases like taeniasis/cysticercosis from Taenia solium have serious health, social and economic consequences. Despite urgent calls from WHO and governments for intensified control of T. solium, this remains challenging in practice. Intervention failures point to gaps in understanding about behaviours relating to T. solium risk and the critical need for insight into these behaviours. In this study we explored known behavioural risks associated with T. solium in northern Lao PDR. A qualitative assessment was conducted in 28 villages using

Overview of Taenia solium cysticercosis in West Africa.

Human and porcine cysticercosis is endemic in West Africa, where epilepsy is relatively common, but rarely reported due to fear of stigmatization. Neurocysticercosis, caused by Taenia solium, tends to affect the poor in developing countries and control is hampered by inadequate infrastructure and financial resources coupled with lack of adequate information about its significance and distribution. The risk factors for human cysticercosis are closely associated with the characteristics of smallholder or backyard pig farming systems prevalent in this region. Poverty, ignorance and lack of politi

The societal cost of Taenia solium cysticercosis in Tanzania.

Taenia solium is a zoonotic parasite prevalent in many low income countries throughout Latin America, Asia and sub-Saharan Africa, including Tanzania. The parasite is recognized as a public health threat; however the burden it poses on populations of Tanzania is unknown. The aim of this study was to estimate the societal cost of T. solium cysticercosis in Tanzania, by assessing both the health and economic burden. The societal cost of T. solium cysticercosis was assessed in humans and pigs based on data obtained by a systematic review. Experts' opinion was sought in cases where data were not r

Elimination of Taenia solium Transmission in Northern Peru.

BACKGROUND: Taeniasis and cysticercosis are major causes of seizures and epilepsy. Infection by the causative parasite Taenia solium requires transmission between humans and pigs. The disease is considered to be eradicable, but data on attempts at regional elimination are lacking. We conducted a three-phase control program in Tumbes, Peru, to determine whether regional elimination would be feasible. METHODS: We systematically tested and compared elimination strategies to show the feasibility of interrupting the transmission of T. solium infection in a region of highly endemic disease in Peru.

[Identification of proliferating cells in Taenia solium cysts].

Neoblasts are totipotent cells, solely responsible for the proliferation and maturation of tissues in free-living flatworms. Similar cells have been isolated from parasitic flatworms such as Echinococcus. Taenia solium causes human taeniasis (intestinal) and cysticercosis in humans and pigs. Brain infection with larvae (cysts) of T. solium results in neurocysticercosis which is hyperendemic in Peru, and its treatment is associated with serious neurological symptoms. The proliferative capacity and development stages of T. solium have not been described and the neoblasts of this parasite have no

Taeniasis and cysticercosis due to Taenia solium in Japan.

Taenia solium is a zoonotic cestode that causes taeniasis and cysticercosis in humans. The parasite is traditionally found in developing countries where undercooked pork is consumed under poor sanitary conditions and/or as part of traditional food cultures. However, the recent increase in international tourism and immigration is spreading the disease into non-endemic developed countries such as the United States. Although there has been concern that the number of cysticercosis cases is increasing in Japan, the current situation is not clear. This is largely because taeniasis and cysticercosis

Seroprevalence of human Taenia solium cysticercosis in Haiti.

Human Taenia solium cysticercosis is common in developing countries due to poor sanitary conditions and economics based on breeding livestock, especially pigs, with low hygiene standards. Neurocysticercosis, caused by migration of the larvae of the tapeworm in the nervous system, is the leading cause of acquired epilepsy in adults in Central and South America, sub-Saharan Africa, and East and South Asia. This makes neurocysticercosis a large public health problem in developing countries. Two clinical cases of neurocysticercosis have been observed recently in Haiti. In order to evaluate the pre
