BACKGROUND: Degenerative osteoarthritis (OA) often leads to pain and stiffness of the affected joints, which may affect the physical performance and decrease the quality of life of people with degenerative knee OA. Compared to traditional exercise, tai chi is a safe exercise with slow movements which can facilitate physical functioning and psychological well being, and might be suitable for improving the physical activities of older adults with knee OA. Therefore, this study investigated the impacts of tai chi exercise on the functional fitness of community-dwelling older adults with degenerat

BACKGROUND: Chronic ankle instability (CAI) exhibits a remarkably high incidence among individuals following acute lateral ankle sprains, serving as a primary contributor to the impairment of postural balance and overall quality of life. As a traditional therapy emphasizing postural control and continuous movement, Tai Chi has shown potential in musculoskeletal rehabilitation. However, its specific efficacy and optimal dosage for CAI remain to be clarified.
OBJECTIVE: This study evaluates how Tai Chi affects functional recovery in CAI patients. We specifically examine the role of intervention

OBJECTIVES: Geriatric depression is difficult to treat and frequently accompanied by treatment resistance, suicidal ideations and polypharmacy. New adjunctive mind-body treatment strategies can improve clinical outcomes in geriatric depression and reduce risk for side-effects of pharmacological treatments.
METHODS: We conducted a 3-month randomized controlled trial to assess the efficacy and tolerability of combining Tai Chi Chih (TCC) or Health Education and Wellness training (HEW) with the stable standard antidepressant treatment on mood and cognitive functioning in depressed older adults (

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) is characterized by airflow limitation because of airway and/or alveolar abnormalities. Symptoms include dyspnea, cough, chronic sputum production. As the third-ranked cause of death as well as disability-adjusted life years (DALYs), it poses a significant burden on patients, families, healthcare system and society. Regular physical activity is linked to decrease in morbidity and mortality associated with COPD, but implementation remains challenging. There is a need for community-based interventions that promote physical activity.

BACKGROUND: Parkinson's disease (PD) and Alzheimer's disease (ALZ) represent later-life onset neurodegenerative disorders that gradually rob those afflicted of their quality of life.
PURPOSE: This chapter offers practice-based recommendations on how instruction and practice of Tai Chi Chuan (TCC) can be adapted for individuals with PD and those with ALZ. RESEARCH EVIDENCE: Practice of TCC is widely advocated as an exercise option in PD; however, little validating research exists. Even less is known about feasibility of applications of TCC for individuals with ALZ. CLINICAL IMPRESSIONS: The sl

BACKGROUND: Depressive symptoms in older adults (≥60 years) have a global prevalence of 10-20%, linked to physiological decline, neurotransmitter imbalances and other factors, burdening families and healthcare resources. Existing treatments (pharmacological and non-pharmacological) have limitations, while mind-body exercises hold intervention potential due to their "mind-body linkage" trait-yet comparative effectiveness studies across different types are lacking.
METHODS: Systematic searches were conducted across four databases (PubMed, Cochrane Library, Embase, Web of Science) for randomized

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Fatigue is the most frequently reported symptom among breast cancer survivors (BCSs). Interventions using Tai Chi and Qigong improve fatigue and related symptoms for BCSs when compared to controls; less is known about sham Qigong (i.e., gentle exercise without meditative state or breath focus).
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Fatigued BCSs <10 years post-treatment, aged 45-75, stages 0-III, were randomized to 8 weeks of once-weekly, 60-min sessions of Tai Chi Easy/Qigong (TCQ) (n = 57), Sham Qigong (SQG) (n = 53), or an education support (ES) control (n = 57). Self-reported fat

Tai Chi, a mindfulness-based aerobic exercise, may alleviate depressive symptoms and improve physiological markers in older adults. However, its distinct effects compared with general aerobic exercise remain unclear. To compare the effects of Tai Chi and general aerobic exercise on depressive symptoms and serum lipid levels in community-dwelling older adults with mild to moderate depression, a randomized controlled trial was conducted. Participants were randomly assigned to Tai Chi (n = 120) or general aerobic exercise (n = 120) for 3 months. Depressive symptoms and serum lipid levels were mea

Aromatase inhibitors are prescribed in breast cancer due to their associated lower rate of cancer recurrence compared to tamoxifen. However, aromatase inhibitor-induced arthralgia (AIIA) is one of the leading causes of treatment nonadherence, increasing the risk of cancer recurrence. The pathophysiology of AIIA is poorly understood, and although current recommendations for AIIA include lifestyle changes and analgesics depending on the severity of symptoms, there is no established effective treatment. The aim of this study is to explore the presentation and mechanism of AIIA and investigate the

BACKGROUND: Mild cognitive impairment (MCI) is a critical stage of dementia. Previous reviews have suggested that physical exercise combined with non-invasive brain stimulation is more beneficial for improving cognitive function. However, no targeted studies have confirmed the effect of Tai Chi combined with transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS) on the improvement of cognitive function in patients with MCI. Thus, this randomized trial was conducted to assess the effect of Tai Chi combined with tDCS on the cognitive performance of patients with MCI.
METHODS: From April 2018 to Februar
