Takayasu Arteritis Coexisting with Cutaneous Leishmaniasis.

Takayasu arteritis (TA) is a rare large-vessel vasculitis that can result in significant morbidity and mortality. The coexistence of TA with leishmaniasis infection has not been reported previously. Case description: An 8-year-old girl presented with recurrent skin nodules that heal spontaneously for four years. Her skin biopsy revealed granulomatous inflammation with Leishmania amastigotes identified in the histocyte cytoplasm and the extracellular space. The diagnosis of cutaneous leishmaniasis was made and intralesional sodium antimony gluconate was started. One month later, she experienced

Pregnancy outcomes in Takayasu arteritis patients.

OBJECTIVES: To investigate the pregnancy outcomes of patients with Takayasu arteritis (TAK) and identify the relevant risk factors. METHODS: A total of 110 pregnancies in 80 patients in a Chinese TAK cohort and 550 matched pregnancies in healthy women between 2000 and 2020 were included. The pregnancy outcomes between patients and controls were compared by Fisher's exact test. Logistic regression analysis was used to identify risk factors for adverse pregnancy outcomes and maternal complications in patients with TAK. RESULTS: In this case-control study, our results have demonstrated that adv

Neuroimaging of Children With Takayasu Arteritis.

OBJECTIVE: Takayasu arteritis is a rare granulomatous chronic vasculitis that affects the aorta and its main branches. Neurologic manifestations can accompany the disease; however, there is no study on neuroimaging in children with Takayasu arteritis. Therefore, we aimed to evaluate cranial magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) in pediatric Takayasu arteritis patients. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Demographic, clinical, and laboratory data were obtained retrospectively. RESULTS: The study included 15 pediatric Takayasu arteritis patients. All patients presented with constitutional symptoms. Additionall

[Renovascular hypertension secondary to Takayasu arteritis].

Secondary arterial hypertension (HT) is an increase in blood pressure due to a recognisable cause. It is estimated that the prevalence of people with HT is around 5%-15%. The search for secondary HT in all hypertensive patients is neither feasible nor cost-effective. However, there are a series of signs that force us to discount its diagnosis such as newly diagnosed hypertension before the age of 40, acute worsening of hypertension, resistant hypertension, the presence of extensive organ injury or clinical-analytical alterations, etc. It is important to diagnosis these patients since treatment

Takayasu Arteritis Coexisting with Sclerosing Osteomyelitis.

We report a rare case of a 27-year-old woman with Takayasu arteritis (TAK) complicated by diffuse sclerosing osteomyelitis. She first presented with sclerosing osteomyelitis of the right mandible without evidence of arteritis in the carotid arteries. Eight months later, she complained of left neck pain, and imaging studies revealed the presence of arteritis in the left carotid artery. She was diagnosed with TAK, and immunosuppressive treatment was initiated, which was effective for both the arteritis and the osteomyelitis. Osteomyelitis is an important complication of TAK and bone scintigraphy

Childhood-onset Takayasu arteritis: an update.

Childhood-onset Takayasu arteritis (c-TA) is a distinct subset affecting a wide age group, ranging from young infants to adolescents and it differs from adult TA in many aspects. There is scarcity of data on c-TA worldwide. The disease is classified using the European League Against Rheumatism/Pediatric Rheumatology International Trials Organization/Pediatric Rheumatology European Society criteria. The non-specific nature of presenting complaints and lack of appropriate biomarkers delay the early diagnosis of this illness and many children present with complications, which become irreversible

Myocardial perfusion imaging in Takayasu arteritis.

OBJECTIVE: Myocardial perfusion defects using scintigraphy have been frequently observed in patients with Takayasu arteritis (TA) without coronary stenosis. The aim of our study was to evaluate coronary microcirculation in TA using thallium-201 (201Tl) myocardial scintigraphy and dipyridamole (DPM) as vasodilator agent. METHODS: Twenty-five consecutive patients with TA were prospectively recruited. They were asymptomatic for cardiac issues and examined using 201Tl myocardial scintigraphy at rest and after coronary artery vasodilation with intravenous DPM. Factors associated with improvement i

Multidetector CT angiography in Takayasu arteritis.

OBJECTIVE: To analyse the spectrum of Takayasu's arteritis (TA) on multidetector CT angiography (MDCTA). MATERIALS AND METHODS: A retrospective analysis of the MDCTA findings was performed on 15 patients clinically diagnosed as Takayasu's arteritis. The spectrum and incidence of imaging findings on CTA were compared to studies in literature on catheter angiography in Takayasu's arteritis. Laboratory parameters were available in nine patients. The disease was considered active if erythrocyte sedimentation rate (ESR) levels were elevated and 'C' reactive protein (CRP) was positive. An attempt w

Takayasu arteritis with multiple cardiovascular complications.

A 60-year-old Japanese woman first presented in 1990 with effort angina. She underwent coronary angiography and was diagnosed with bilateral coronary ostial stenosis and Takayasu arteritis. Coronary artery bypass graft surgery (CABG) for multiple vessels was attempted, but the blood flow in the bilateral internal thoracic and gastroepiploic arteries was to poor for a donor artery, and the calcification of the ascending aortic wall was too severe for anastomosis of saphenous vein grafts. Therefore, the proper hepatic artery was connected to the left anterior descending artery using a vein graft

Noninvasive cerebrovascular assessment of Takayasu arteritis.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Despite prominent neurological symptoms reported in Takayasu arteritis (TA), a complete evaluation of the cerebral circulation has not been consistently performed. The purpose of this study is to describe MR angiography (MRA), color Doppler flow imaging, and transcranial Doppler (TCD) findings in the extracranial and intracranial cerebral arteries in TA. METHODS: MRA, color Doppler flow imaging, and TCD were performed in 21 patients with TA. Intima-media thickness was measured in the common carotid artery. The correlation between noninvasive studies and panaorto-arteri

Stent supported angioplasty in Takayasu arteritis.

Eleven patients with Takayasu Arteritis (TA) underwent angioplasty and stent placement in aorta, renal, carotid, subclavian and coronary arteries. Five wall stents were deployed in aorta in four patients. Indications for angioplasty and stent placement in aorta included hypertension in four patients and claudication and erectile impotence in one patient each. Post-procedure the peak systolic pressure gradient across the stenotic segment in the aorta disappeared. Six patients underwent angioplasty and stent placement in carotid arteries. Indications were syncope in 6 patients, loss of vision, s

[Takayasu arteritis and the algodystrophic syndrome].

Algodystrophic syndrome represents a group of symptoms involving pain and oedema of the affected extremity, with movement disorders, vegetative and vasomotor disturbances and focal osteoporosis development. The key role in the pathogenesis of the syndrome plays intensive and prolonged stimulation of pain receptors. The authors present a case report of 47 years old woman with Takayasu's arteritis complicated by skin defects on right instep and sole with consequent development of algodystrophic syndrome on both lower extremities. Combined influence of both types of nociceptive stimuli is demonst

Isolated pulmonary Takayasu arteritis: clinicopathologic characteristics.

Involvement of the pulmonary arteries is common in systemic Takayasu arteritis and, in nearly all of the reported cases, the diagnosis has been based solely on clinical and angiographic evaluations of the patients. Isolated pulmonary Takayasu arteritis occurs rarely and can be diagnosed only after histologic examination of the appropriate tissue specimens; five such patients are described herein. The patients were two men and three women. Their age at diagnosis ranged from 25 to 66 years. The initial clinical diagnosis was thromboembolism in two patients, and primary pulmonary hypertension, pu

Wegener's granulomatosis overlapped with Takayasu arteritis.

A 27-year-old woman presented with destructive scleritis of the left eye with subcutaneous haemorrhage and swelling of the lower eyelid. She had experienced recurrent nasal bleeding for the last six years, and chronic sinusitis resulting in the destruction of the nasal septum and left maxillary sinus. Nasal mucosal biopsies demonstrated granuloma formation with no evidence of vasculitis. The level of serum cytoplasmic anti-neutrophil cytoplasm antibody (c-ANCA) was significantly increased. Furthermore, multiple sites of complete occlusions were detected in the left subclavian and common caroti

Percutaneous transluminal angioplasty in Takayasu arteritis.

Percutaneous transluminal balloon angioplasty (PTBA) was performed in 87 patients for 111 stenotic lesions due to Takayasu arteritis. Of the lesions attempted for dilatation, 35 were in the aorta, 64 in renal arteries, 9 in subclavian, and 3 in common iliac arteries. The stenosis of aorta could be successfully dilated in 33 of 35 (94.3%) patients with fall in peak systolic pressure gradient (PSG) from 77.7 +/- 28.4 mmHg to 26.4 +/- 20.6 mmHg (P < 0.001) and increase in luminal diameter from 4.7 +/- 2.4 mm to 10.1 +/- 4.1 mm (P < 0.001). Takayasu arteritis. An arteriographic-pathological correlation.

We report an aortographic-pathological correlation in a patient with Takayasu arteritis. The inflammatory activity in Takayasu arteritis gradually subsides and accordingly, the histological appearance goes through a cycle of changes, ranging from acute florid inflammation to an old scarred vessel. At gross pathological inspection, the aortic intima frequently shows longitudinal wrinkling and tree-barking indistinguishable from syphilitic aortitis. In other instances, secondary atherosclerosis totally obscures the underlying changes of aortitis. In such instances, close search at various levels
