Background. Takotsubo cardiomyopathy is defined as a transient left ventricular dysfunction, usually accompanied by electrocardiographic changes. The literature documents only two other cases of Takotsubo cardiomyopathy in the latter setting. Methods. A 78-year-old female presented to the ED with severe shortness of breath, hypertension, and tachycardia. On physical exam, heart sounds (S1 and S2) were regular and wheezing was noticed bilaterally. We found laboratory results with a WBC of 20.0 (103/μL), troponin of 16.52 ng/mL, CK-mb of 70.6%, and BNP of 177 pg/mL. The patient was intubated for…

Takotsubo cardiomyopathy simulates acute myocardial infarction, and it is characterised by reversible left ventricular failure. A case of Takotsubo cardiomyopathy diagnosed after emergency angiography performed in a patient with evidence of acute myocardial infarction in the postoperative period will be described in this report. Transurethral resection of a bladder tumour (TUR-BT) was performed in a 92-year-old male patient by the urology clinic. The patient was transferred to the post-anaesthesia care unit after the operation. An echocardiography was performed because of the sudden onset of d…

Takotsubo cardiomyopathy is characterized by the acute onset of a reversible left ventricular wall motion abnormality that extends beyond a single coronary artery's distribution, following a period of emotional or physical stress. We present a 4 yr 11 mo old boy who was admitted to the pediatric intensive care unit a few days following tonsillectomy and adenoidectomy. The patient presented with mild cyanosis, shortness of breath and decreased levels of consciousness. Initial investigations revealed significant hypokinesia and dilatation of the mid and apical segments of the left ventricle alon…

Takotsubo cardiomyopathy is characterized by transient multisegmental left ventricular dysfunction, dynamic electrocardiographic changes that mimic acute myocardial infarction, and the absence of obstructive coronary disease. Takotsubo cardiomyopathy has been solidly associated with antecedent emotional and physical stressors that trigger catecholamine surges, which lead to coronary vasospasm or direct myocardial injury. Some medications can also cause catecholamine surges, although this phenomenon is not as well described. Duloxetine is a combined serotonin and norepinephrine reuptake inhibit…

Takotsubo cardiomyopathy is seen after intense emotional or physical triggers. The authors present a 72-year-old woman who experienced acute substernal chest pain and dyspnea after an acupuncture session. Electrocardiogram revealed anterolateral ST elevations, and chest radiograph revealed pneumothorax.

Takotsubo cardiomyopathy (TCM) is a transient stress-induced cardiomyopathy characterized by acute left ventricular systolic dysfunction in the absence of obstructive coronary artery disease. Electroconvulsive therapy (ECT) is known to provoke acute autonomic fluctuations and catecholamine surges, which may rarely precipitate TCM. We presented a middle-aged woman with coronary artery disease (CAD), bipolar disorder, and remote tobacco use who developed acute substernal chest pain radiating to the left arm approximately four hours after her first outpatient ECT session. Transthoracic echocardio…

Myasthenia gravis (MG) is an autoimmune disorder of the neuromuscular junction that affects skeletal muscles causing weakness, typically the ocular, facial, oropharyngeal, respiratory, and limb muscles. Patients can present as either an MG exacerbation with weakness of any muscle group or an MG crisis which is a life-threatening weakness of the respiratory muscles that usually requires intubation and mechanical ventilation; however, though rare, cardiac manifestations must be considered in the management of such patients.

BACKGROUND: Myasthenic crisis is characterized by severe weakness in bulbar and respiratory muscles leading to respiratory failure and can be a natural result of myasthenia gravis or precipitate due to infections, surgeries, and pregnancy. It has been shown that stressful emotional events can lead to stress, or takotsubo cardiomyopathy. Takotsubo cardiomyopathy is characterized by transient reversible left ventricular dysfunction in the absence of obstructive artery disease with hypo- or akinesis of the apex with hypercontractility of the base.
METHODS: Case report and review of literature.

Takotsubo cardiomyopathy (TTC) is an acute reversible form of left ventricular (LV) systolic dysfunction extending beyond a coronary artery vascular territory usually due to physical or psychological stressors. Dextrocardia with situs inversus is a rare embryologic anomaly whereby the heart and aorta are mirrored on the contralateral side. We describe a case of a 93-year-old female with dextrocardia who presented with chest pain, atrial fibrillation with rapid ventricular response, and transient inferior ST elevation. Coronary angiography demonstrated an eccentric mid right coronary artery (RC…

A 101 years-old woman was admitted to our Emergency Department (ED) for acute dyspnea which onset nearly two hours before presentation. She … segment in V2-V6 leads. The echocardiogram showed the typical apical ballooning, characteristic of takotsubo cardiomyopathy. Blood test only showed a significant increase of cardiac troponin I. Considering the very good conditions of the patient, a coronary angiography was performed, that demonstrated a coronary tree totally free of lesions, thus confirming the clinical …

Takotsubo cardiomyopathy (TC) occurs predominantly in postmenopausal women, suggesting a possible role of reproductive and hormonal factors in the pathophysiology of this condition. Yet reproductive characteristics of women with TC have received limited attention. This prospective case-control study sought to explore reproductive characteristics associated with TC. Incident TC cases and myocardial infarction (MI) controls were recruited among consecutive women presenting at the emergency departments of 2 large medical centers in Massachusetts and Connecticut. Female healthy controls were recru…

As a stress-induced disease, takotsubo cardiomyopathy can also occur in septic syndromes; however, the hemodynamic management is fundamentally different from the treatment approaches for classical septic cardiomyopathy, as beta mimetics can increase the heart failure symptoms in takotsubo cardiomyopathy. This article reports the case of an 82-year-old female patient who presented with acute abdomen due to adhesion ileus and takotsubo cardiomyopathy, developed severe septic shock with peritonitis and could be successfully hemodynamically stabilized with levosimendan.

CASE: A 76-year-old woman was found unconscious by her family. She had suffered a fall and was soaked in kerosene. On arrival at our emergency department, she was unconscious, normotensive, with right hemiplegia and chemical burns. A computed tomographic scan of her head indicated left thalamic hemorrhage. An electrocardiogram showed ST elevation at the precardial leads. An echocardiogram revealed characteristic of takotsubo cardiomyopathy.
OUTCOME: The patient was intubated and treated conservatively. She was transferred to another hospital for rehabilitation after complete epithelization of…

Takotsubo cardiomyopathy is an acute cardiac syndrome characterized by transient regional wall motion abnormalities of the left ventricular apex or midventricle. Patients often present with chest pain or dyspnoea, ST-segment elevation, and minor elevations of cardiac enzyme levels. Takotsubo cardiomyopathy has been associated with severe emotional or physical stress such as severe burns, spinal cord injury, subarachnoid haemorrhage, and multiple traumas. We report a case of takotsubo cardiomyopathy in a 79-year-old woman with pulmonary embolism. Although pulmonary embolism has been listed as a…

The presentation of Takotsubo cardiomyopathy (TC) has overlapping features with acute coronary syndrome (ACS), though traditionally developing from different triggers, including both physical and emotional. Additionally, TC is associated with multiple comorbidities and sequelae. We present a multifactorial case of a 73-year-old female with underlying hypertrophic cardiomyopathy who presented with a high-degree atrioventricular (AV) block requiring permanent pacemaker (PPM) placement and subsequently developed TC. Patients with hypertrophic obstructive cardiomyopathy (HCM) have been theorized t…

BACKGROUND: Takotsubo cardiomyopathy (TCM) is a rare cause of acutely decompensated heart failure among patients without pre-existing chronic heart failure. We present a case of recurrent TCM attributed to benzodiazepine withdrawal.
CASE SUMMARY: A 40-year-old woman with prior TCM and reverse TCM was admitted for cardiogenic shock after having recently changed her benzodiazepine regimen. She was emergently cannulated for venoarterial extracorporeal membrane oxygenation; transthoracic echocardiography showed an ejection fraction of 10% to 15% with apical hypokinesis. Intra-aortic balloon pump …

We present the case of a 66-year-old woman undergoing chronic dialysis who developed pneumonia and enteritis after being infected with COVID-19 and had severe wall motion reduction similar to a left ventricular aneurysm. There was concern that the condition might worsen due to left ventricular wall thinning and curious wall motion abnormalities, but echocardiography one month later showed normalization. After four months, simultaneous binuclear myocardial scintigraphy of thallium and BMIPP showed that the mismatch had disappeared. We considered that there may be other factors specific to COVID
