Thiolated tamarind seed polymer-chitosan composite scaffolds for enhanced skin tissue regeneration.

The present study focuses on the formulation and evaluation of a tamarind seed polysaccharide (TSP)-based scaffold for promoting skin tissue regeneration. The TSP was extracted and chemically modified through thiolation, which boosted its antimicrobial, anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, and wound-healing abilities, while also improving its mucoadhesive properties. Composite scaffolds were developed using thiolated TSP and chitosan, with cinnamaldehyde incorporated to improve structural crosslinking. The scaffolds were characterized for their physicochemical properties, including functional group

Aqueous extract of tamarind seeds selectively increases glucose transporter-2, glucose transporter-4, and islets' intracellular calcium levels and stimulates β-cell proliferation resulting in improved glucose homeostasis in rats with streptozotocin-induced diabetes mellitus.

Tamarindus indica Linn. has been in use for a long time in Asian food and traditional medicine for different diseases including diabetes and obesity. However, the molecular mechanisms of these effects have not been fully understood. In view of the multidimensional activity of tamarind seeds due to their having high levels of polyphenols and flavonoids, we hypothesized that the insulin mimetic effect of aqueous tamarind seed extract (TSE) might increase glucose uptake through improvement in the expression of genes of the glucose transporter (GLUT) family and sterol regulatory element-binding pr

Sequential patterns of intramural digestion of galactoxyloglucan in tamarind seedlings.

The structure and breakdown of galactoxyloglucan (GXG)-rich cells was studied from cotyledons of Tamarindus indicus L. The depletion of GXG was followed at different levels: quantitative, histochemical and cytochemical. At the ultrastructural level two probes were used: one general for polysaccharides (periodic acid - thiocarbohydrazide - silver proteinate test), the other specific for the terminal galactosyl residues of GXG (β-galactosidase-gold complex). They were complemented by water-extraction of the GXG and analysis of the constituting monosaccharides by gas chromatography. Despite their

Investigation of skin permeation, ex vivo inhibition of venom-induced tissue destruction, and wound healing of African plants used against snakebites.

ETHNOPHARMACOLOGICAL RELEVANCE: Snakebite envenomation causes 5000-10,000 mortalities and results in more than 5-15,000 amputations in sub-Saharan Africa alone every year. The inaccessibility of antiserum therapy is a vast problem, and only about 2.5% of the actual need for antiserum in Africa is covered. Numerous plants have shown in vitro inhibitory activity against one or more of the hydrolytic enzymes involved in snakebite-induced necrosis. However, a more thorough examination of the plant species in ex vivo and in vitro cell assay models is needed to test their ability to inhibit necrosis

Osteogenic potential of tamarind seed polysaccharide sulfate in tissue engineering.

Bone related problems due to numerous reasons are global concerns and increasing recently. Although bone tissues have an ability to regenerate, they cannot completely heal without external intervention when severe defects occur. It is required to develop new biomaterials, termed scaffolds, that can support and induce bone tissue regeneration. A biomaterial scaffold for bone repair possesses the requirements of non-toxicity, biocompatibility, osteoconductivity, and non-immunogenicity. Among natural osteogenic compounds, tamarind seed polysaccharide (TSP) is a desirable agent for fabrication of

Multicomponent treatment for laryngopharyngeal reflux disease in patients over 65: age-related differences in patient-reported and endoscopic outcomes compared with younger adults.

BACKGROUND: Laryngopharyngeal reflux disease (LPRD) in older adults may present with greater endoscopic severity, impaired symptom perception, and increased comorbidity burden, making clinical assessment and treatment selection particularly challenging in this population. Although proton pump inhibitors (PPIs) are commonly used, prolonged treatment in elderly patients raises safety concerns. Multicomponent medical devices, including alginate-based formulations, may offer a PPI-sparing alternative. METHODS: This prospective, single-center observational study enrolled 48 patients with clinicall

Tamarind seed polysaccharide-metformin insert: Higher ocular retention, slow-release, and efficacy against corneal burn.

Metformin (MET) can be an alternative therapeutic strategy for managing ocular burn primarily because of its pleiotropic mechanism. Longer retention on the ocular surface and sustained release are necessary to ensure the efficacy of MET for ocular application. Although the high aqueous solubility of MET is good for formulation and biocompatibility, it makes MET prone to high nasolacrimal drainage. This limits ocular residence and may be a challenge in its application. To address this, polymers approved for ophthalmic application with natural origin were analyzed through in silico methods to de
