BACKGROUND: Chestnut and quebracho tannins may support gut health in weaned piglets, but their efficacy likely depends on farm environment and microbial capacity to convert tannins into bioactive metabolites. This study evaluated the effects of a blend of chestnut-derived hydrolysable tannins and quebracho-derived condensed tannins on growth performance, diarrhea occurrence, gut metagenome, and fecal metabolome in piglets reared under two commercial farm conditions. A total of 160 weaned piglets (initial body weight 6.53 ± 0.13 kg) were assigned to a 2 × 2 factorial design comprising 2 weaning

High-molecular-weight Mannoproteins (MPs) and Low-molecular-Weight Mannoproteins (LMPs) were isolated from purified enzymatic extracts of four different Saccharomyces cerevisiae yeast strains with pure endo-β-glucanases to preserve their native structures. These strains included a reference strain (BY4742), its mutants ΔMnn4 (with no mannosyl-phosphorylation) and ΔMnn2 (with a linear N-glycosylation backbone), and a selected wine yeast strain. MPs and LMPs were then used to study how the structure of their polysaccharide moiety impacts their interactions with Grape Seed Tannins (ST) and colloi

One distinguishing feature of the persimmon, that differentiates it from other fruits, is its high proanthocyanidins content, known as persimmon tannin (PT). Despite the poor absorption of PT in the small intestine, results from animal studies demonstrate that PT has many health benefits. Our goal in this review is to summarize the literature that elucidates the relationship between PT structure and activity. In addition, we also summarize the potential mechanisms underlying the health benefits that result from PT consumption; this includes the hypolipidemic, hypoglycemic, antioxidant, anti-in

Tree and shrub barks have been used as folk medicine by numerous cultures across the globe for millennia, for a variety of indications, including as vasorelaxants and antispasmodics. Here, using electrophysiology and myography, we discovered that the KCNQ5 voltage-gated potassium channel mediates vascular smooth muscle relaxant effects of barks used in Native American folk medicine. Bark extracts (1%) from Birch, Cramp Bark, Slippery Elm, White Oak, Red Willow, White Willow, and Wild Cherry each strongly activated KCNQ5 expressed in Xenopus oocytes. Testing of a subset including both the most

BACKGROUND: Enterotoxigenic Escherichia coli (ETEC) is classically associated with acute secretory diarrhea, which induces 2 million people death in developing countries over a year, predominantly children in the first years of life. Previously, tannins (47.75%) were extracted from Galla Chinensis and prepared as Galla Chinensis oral solution (GOS) which showed significant antidiarrheal activity in a castor oil-induced diarrhea in mice. Whether the tannins extract were also effective in treatment of ETEC-induced diarrhea was determined in this study.
METHODS: Mice were randomly divided into 6

Light exposure of white wine can cause a light-struck taste (LST), a fault induced by riboflavin (RF) and methionine (Met) leading to the formation of volatile sulfur compounds (VSCs), including methanethiol (MeSH) and dimethyl disulfide (DMDS). The study aimed to investigate the impact of different antioxidants, i.e., sulfur dioxide (SO2), glutathione (GSH) and chestnut tannins (CT), on preventing LST in model wine (MW) and white wine (WW), both containing RF and Met. Both MW and WW samples were added with the antioxidants, either individually or in different combinations, prior to 2-h light

The processed areca catechu (betel) nuts are popularly chewed in the Indian sub-continent. The significance of areca flavanol (tannin) in relation to oral submucous fibrosis and oral carcinogenesis has been reviewed. The quantitative analysis of ten different commercial nut samples from Bombay, India showed wide variations and a higher than average content of flavanols. These variations reflect their appeal and also influence the predisposition of these diseases. The incidence of oral submucous fibrosis and the nut flavanol contents from Bombay and Kerala were taken for comparisons.

Conventional water treatment typically employs chemical coagulants and flocculants, such as aluminum sulfate and iron salts. However, the intensive use of these products can lead to negative environmental impacts and pose significant health risks. In this context, bioflocculants derived from renewable sources, such as tannins extracted from açaí seeds (Euterpe oleracea), represent a promising alternative for sustainable production. This study investigated the efficiency of a cationic bioflocculant (BioTAC), developed from açaí seed tannins and chemically modified via the Mannich reaction, for

Four types of classical tannin-based foam samples were prepared via different methods in the current study with an attempt to find out the impact of each one on the physico-mechanical properties. The results of performed tests showed similarity to the general trend of related research, with typical negative relation between the foam density and mechanical strength. A critical point was found for each type of foam samples, for example, for tannin-formaldehyde foams (TFF), they were in the range of 85-95 kg/m3, while for tannin-glutaraldehyde foams (TGF), mechanically-generated tannin foams (MTF

Tannins, which are natural plant polyphenols, are widely used in different fields, especially in biomedical applications due to their unique properties, including high abundance, low cost, structural diversity, protein precipitation, biocompatibility, and biodegradability. However, they fail to satisfy the requirements in some specific applications (e.g., environmental remediation) on account of their water solubility, making their separation and regeneration difficult. Inspired by the design of composite materials, tannin-immobilized composites have emerged as promising and novel materials an

Cryopreservation and storage of semen for artificial insemination (AI) result in excessive accumulation of reactive oxygen species (ROS). This leads to a shortened life span and reduced motility of spermatozoa post-thawing, with consequent impairment of their function. However, certain levels of ROS are essential to facilitate the capacitation of spermatozoa required for successful fertilisation. Tannins, as well-known antioxidant compounds, may act as ROS binders/acceptors/scavengers to inhibit the damaging effects of ROS. This review comprises an analysis of the semen cryopreservation protoc

BACKGROUND: Pythium insidiosum is the etiological agent of pythiosis, an emerging life-threatening infectious disease in tropical and subtropical regions. The pathogen is a fungus-like organism resistant to antifungal therapy, for this reason, most cases need extensive surgical debridments as treatment, but depending on the size and anatomical region of the lesion, such approach is unfeasible. We investigate the fungicidal effect and toxicity of crude bark extract of Stryphnodendron adstringens and commercially available tannin on Pythium insidiosum both in vitro and in vivo.
METHODS: Standar

Parasitic infections with gastrointestinal nematodes (GINs) still represent a worldwide major pathological threat associated with the outdoor production of various livestock species. Because of the widespread resistance to synthetic chemical anthelmintics, there is a strong impetus to explore novel approaches for a more integrated management of these infections. The use of nutraceuticals in the control of GINs is one of the alternatives which has been widely studied for 20 years. The objectives of this review are: (i) to define and illustrate the concept of 'nutraceutical' in the context of ve

Saliva appears as a defence mechanism, against potential negative effects of tannins, in some species of animals which have to deal with these plant secondary metabolites in their regular diets. This study was carried out to investigate changes in parotid saliva protein profiles of sheep (Ovis aries) and goats (Capra hircus), induced by condensed tannin ingestion. Five Merino sheep and five Serpentina goats were maintained on a quebracho tannin enriched diet for 10 days. Saliva was collected through catheters inserted on parotid ducts and salivary proteins were separated by two-dimensional gel
