Talocalcaneal Tarsal Coalition Size: Evaluation and Reproducibility of MRI Measurements.

BACKGROUND: The size of talocalcaneal tarsal coalitions (TCCs) is one of the main factors that is thought to influence patient outcomes after resection. Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) is increasingly being used to diagnose and characterize TCCs. However, there is no reproducible MRI-based measurement of TCC size reported in the literature. The purpose of this study was to create a method to reproducibly measure TCC size using MRI. METHODS: Twenty-seven patients with TCCs diagnosed by a hindfoot coronal proton density (PD) MRI between 2017 and 2020 were included. Five independent raters meas

Isolated navicular-medial cuneiform tarsal coalition revisited: a case report.

Tarsal coalitions between the navicular and the cuneiforms occur infrequently when compared with the more common talocalcaneal and calcaneonavicular coalitions. Isolated cases of navicular-medial cuneiform coalitions have only rarely been reported; however, the diagnosis is likely underrecognized. Conservative management should be pursued initially for symptomatic patients, followed by surgical options for unresponsive cases. The few reports available recommend treatment with navicular-medial cuneiform fusions, but long-term follow-up is not available to assess outcome and it remains unclear w

Bilateral coexistent calcaneonavicular and talocalcaneal tarsal coalition: a case report.

Tarsal coalition refers to a union of two or more tarsal bones. The union may be fibrous, cartilaginous, or bony. The most common sites of tarsal coalition reported in the literature are the calcaneonavicular, the talocalcaneal, and, less commonly, the talonavicular areas. Bilateral coexistent multiple tarsal coalitions are a rare occurrence. The authors present a case report of a 17-year-old boy with bilateral coexistent calcaneonavicular and talonavicular bars. The diagnosis was established by radiographs and CT scanning. The patient was treated conservatively with immobilization of the foot

Post-operative outcomes of arthroscopic tarsal coalition resection: A systematic review.

BACKGROUND: Arthroscopic resection of tarsal coalitions is a relatively new technique. This systematic review aimed to investigate the post-operative complications and functional outcomes in arthroscopic resection of tarsal coalitions. METHODS: PubMed, Medline, Embase and Cochrane library were searched for studies that reported outcomes in arthroscopic resection of tarsal coalitions. RESULTS: 8 studies met the inclusion criteria. Post-operative outcomes were reported in 103 cases. The overall complication rate was 13.6%. Tibial nerve injury was reported in 1 patient. All included studies dem

Bilateral tarsal tunnel syndrome attributed to bilateral fibrous tarsal coalition and symmetrical hypertrophy of the sustentaculum tali.

Tarsal tunnel syndrome (TTS) is one of the frequently encountered entrapment neuropathies of the lower limb. Most often the aetiology is considered to be idiopathic. However, it has to be thoroughly investigated to rule out diverse extrinsic and intrinsic causes. The sustentaculum tali (ST) forms the superior part of the distal tarsal tunnel, and any increase in its size may result in irritation of the tibial nerve or its branches, the medial and lateral plantar nerves or decrease the overall volume of the tarsal tunnel culminating to clinical features of TTS. A hypertrophied ST is an extremel

Middle subtalar osseous coalition with associated fusion of the sinus tarsi: a previously undescribed type of tarsal coalition.

Tarsal coalitions affect up to 13% of the population and may cause chronic ankle and hindfoot pain. Coalitions can be subdivided as osseous, cartilaginous, or fibrous types. The most common type of tarsal coalition involvesthe talocalcaneal joint, where it usually affects the middle subtalar joint. In this article, we describe a previously unpublished form of talocalcaneal coalition with osseous coalition at the level of the middle subtalar joint with associated fusion of the sinus tarsi.

Bilateral Triple Talocalcaneal, Calcaneonavicular, and Talonavicular Tarsal Coalition: A Case Report.

We report a rare case of a female, aged 42 years, with symptomatic bilateral triple tarsal coalition, that is, talocalcaneal, calcaneonavicular, and talonavicular tarsal coalition. The patient was treated conservatively by adjusting her activities. At the 12-month follow-up, the patient was asymptomatic. Bilateral triple tarsal coalition is a rare disorder, especially in nonsyndromic patients. The purpose of this case report was to highlight this rare type of multiple bilateral tarsal coalitions and to discuss the relevant existing literature.

Nonosseous Tarsal Coalition of the Lateral Cuneocuboid Joint: A Case Report.

We describe a rare case of a nonosseous coalition of the lateral cuneocuboid joint with peroneal spasm that we successfully treated with resection. A 60-year-old female had been experiencing constant pain in her right foot, particularly when walking and going up and down stairs. The pain had been present for approximately 1 year after she had experienced a minor injury. Her right ankle showed plantar flexion restrictions (right 20° and left 40°) and was held in an antalgic valgus position. Sudden passive plantar flexion produced pain behind the lateral malleolus of the right ankle. Tenderness

Plantar contact stress and gait analysis after resection of tarsal coalition.

The purpose of this study was to assess the foot loading characteristics and foot function of patients after operative correction of a tarsal coalition. Ten patients who had undergone operative treatment of a tarsal coalition were included in this study. One foot was affected in five patients and both feet in the other five. A calcaneonavicular coalition was present in 12 feet and a talocalcaneal coalition in three feet. Mean follow-up was 11.3 years. Clinical evaluation was based on a standardized questionnaire, a visual analogue scale for pain (VAS), the American Orthopaedic Foot and Ankle S

Patient-reported Outcomes of Tarsal Coalitions Treated With Surgical Excision.

PURPOSE: There are little patient-reported data on functional outcomes of tarsal coalition resection in children and adolescents. The purpose of this study is to evaluate the medium-term (>2 y) outcomes in patients who have had surgical excision of their symptomatic tarsal coalition and to compare patient-based outcomes in patients who have calcaneonavicular (CN) coalitions to those with talocalcaneal (TC) coalitions. METHODS: A billing query was conducted to identify patients who had surgical excision of their tarsal coalition between 2003 and 2008. Eligible patients were mailed questionnair

Associated Coalitions of Tarsal Bones: Review of the Literature and Presentation of a Classification.

Associated coalitions of tarsal bones, either unilateral or bilateral, may be classified to developmental or syndromic types. There are no specific patterns for osseous or nonosseous configurations of associated tarsal coalitions. Associated developmental tarsal coalitions can be categorized into dual, threefold, massive, and total tarsal coalitions according to the number and sites of the involved joints. Dual coalitions are more common than other types. Among dual tarsal coalitions, the most frequent combination is talocalcaneal (TC) and calcaneonavicular coalitions, also referred to as doub

Multiple osseous tarsal coalitions: a case report and review of the literature.

A patient with multiple tarsal coalitions presenting with symptoms at the age of 47 years is reported. The report highlights the presentation of symptomatic coalitions following trauma in adulthood. Coalitions can pose difficulties in diagnosis, particularly without previous history of pain or disability in childhood. A decrease or loss of subtalar movement, painful movement, and valgus deformity of the hindfoot are usually present in the adult patient but are not often pathognomonic and present a diagnostic conundrum, particularly with x-rays being misinterpreted. This report highlights the p

Fracture of the tarsal navicular associated with calcaneonavicular coalition: a case report.

Fracture of the navicular occurred in a 23-year-old male with unilateral cartilaginous calcaneonavicular coalition. Inversion sprain of the left foot caused the longitudinal navicular fracture next to the coalition. En bloc resection from the beak of the calcaneus to the fracture line of the navicular including the calcaneonavicular coalition was performed, and a short leg cast was applied for 10 days. Four weeks after surgery, he returned to his preinjury level of activity and job as a long-distance truck driver. Two years and 3 months after surgery, he was totally asymptomatic and had gained

High prevalence of tarsal coalitions and tarsal joint variants in a recent cadaver sample and its possible significance.

Tarsal coalitions (TC) are defined as fibrous (beyond normal ligaments), cartilaginous, or osseous unions of at least two tarsal bones. Most of the clinical studies report the prevalence of TC as <1%, but they disregard the asymptomatic coalitions. Because TC have been associated with pathologic conditions, including degenerative arthritic changes, knowledge of their prevalence has clinical importance. The aim of our study was to establish the prevalence of TC and tarsal joint variants. A total of 114 feet from 62 cadavers (average age = 78 years) without obvious foot pathologies were dissecte

8 out of 10 patients do well after surgery for tarsal coalitions: A systematic review on 1284 coalitions.

BACKGROUND: The primary aim was to determine the clinical success rate after treatment for talocalcaneal (TCC) and calcaneonavicular coalitions (CNC). The secondary aim was to evaluate the complication, recurrence and revision rate. METHODS: A search was carried out in MEDLINE, EMBASE and Cochrane Library. Methodological quality was assessed using the Methodological Index for Non-Randomised Studies (MINORS) criteria. The primary outcome was the clinical success rate and was pooled per type of coalition and treatment modality. 95% Confidence Intervals (CI) of the success rates were calculated.
