Arthropathy of the distal articular surfaces of the third metacarpal (Mc3) and metatarsal (Mt3) bones in the Thoroughbred racehorse (Tb) is a natural model of repetitive overload arthrosis. We describe a novel pathology that affects the articular calcified cartilage (ACC) and subchondral bone (SCB) and which is associated with hyaline articular cartilage degeneration. Parasagittal slices cut from the palmar quadrant of the distal condyles of the left Mc3/Mt3 of 39 trained Tbs euthanized for welfare reasons were imaged by point projection microradiography, and backscattered electron (BSE) scann

The reorganization of the ankle in basal amniotes has long been considered a key innovation allowing the evolution of more terrestrial and cursorial behavior. Understanding how this key innovation arose is a complex problem that largely concerns the homologizing of the amniote astragalus with the various ossifications in the anamniote tarsus. Over the last century, several hypotheses have been advanced homologizing the amniote astragalus with the many ossifications in the ankle of amphibian-grade tetrapods. There is an emerging consensus that the amniote astragalus is a complex structure emerg

This study attempted to develop a motor functional index, ankle stance angle (ASA), to assess rat sciatic nerve regeneration subsequent to autografting. ASA, 50 degrees in normal rats, is the ankle joint angle at the mid-stance phase of the gait cycle. In a nerve graft group, a 1-cm segment of the right sciatic nerve was transected and then repaired with nerve autograft. In an ungrafted group, the nerve gap was left unrepaired. ASA measured 4 months after surgery was statistically significantly larger in the nerve graft group (36 degrees) than in the ungrafted group (22 degrees). The results s

Four male Pomeranians that showed alopecia with an age of onset between five months and eight years were investigated. The aim of the investigation was to clarify whether the affected dogs had alopecia X and whether their symptoms might be due to a hereditary defect. The four affected dogs showed hairless patches at the root of the tail, at the back, at the limbs from the thigh to the tarsus and at the abdomen. Within the hairless patches some islets with sparse hair were present. In hairless patches the skin was dark pigmented. Besides the alopecia and hyperpigmentation no other symptoms were

Lameness and hock injuries are recognized welfare and production problems in the dairy industry. The objective of this study was to describe changes in the prevalence of these ailments in 15 freestall herds in the Northeastern United States that participated in an on-farm assessment program. Prevalence was assessed in a high-producing pen in each herd. A confidential report was delivered to each of the farms showing prevalence in relation to other herds assessed within the same region. The average (±SD) period between visits was 11.5 ± 4.4 months (range, 8-25 months). The prevalence of lamenes

Histological examinations and estimations of the contents of ash, phosphorus and calcium were used to investigate the femora and tibiotarsi from lame and normal 35-day-old broilers from Holland, Northern Ireland and Scotland. The prevalence of different pathologies varied with the source of the broilers and there were correlations between histological and bone ash values. The most common condition causing lameness was bacterial infection within the physis and cartilaginous epiphysis (bacterial chondronecrosis) of the proximal tibiotarsus, and there was a possible link between rickets attributa

A flexed dorsoplantar radiographic view of the talocrural joint was a useful additional view to diagnose abnormalities of the lateral trochlear ridge of the talus of 2 dogs. This view outlined the subchondral bone of both trochlear ridges of the talus and the apposing cochlea tibiae of the distal portion of the tibia. The tarsus was flexed at the level of the talocrural joint, and an x-ray beam was centered on the joint. With this additional view, fractures of the lateral trochlear ridge were readily diagnosed. This view would help to demonstrate osteochondral lesions of the lateral trochlear

The influence of variable zinc content (29.1, 250, 1,000 and 2,000 mg/kg of dry weight) in a basic diet containing 7.7 mg of copper/kg on the ability of weanling foals to maintain normal copper balance was investigated. Serum copper and zinc concentrations were monitored, and terminal hepatic copper and zinc contents were measured in 4 weanling foals fed the basic diet containing 29.1 mg of zinc/kg and in 2 foals each fed the higher-zinc diets. Foals fed the lower-zinc diets (29.1 and 250 mg/kg) maintained normal serum copper and zinc concentrations for 14 to 15 weeks, whereas those fed the 2

An analytical method was developed for the simultaneous determination of five cholesterol oxidation products (COPs) in marinated pig feet and hocks by gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS). The five COPs were 7 β -hydroxycholesterol, cholesterol-5 α,6 α -epoxide, 3 β,5 α,6 β -trihydroxycholestane, 25-hydroxycholesterol and 7-ketocholesterol. The sample was extracted with methanol-chloroform (1:2, v/v) and purified by solid phase extraction. Subsequently, the sample was collected for derivatization by N,O-bis(trimethylsilyl)acetamide-trimethyl chlorosilane-1-trimethylsilyllimidazole (3:2

OBJECTIVE: To describe the treatment of subcutaneous lipomas in the horse.
ANIMALS: 3 horses.
CLINICAL PRESENTATION: The horses were aged 1 to 2 years old, with lipoma of the abdomen, prepuce, and tarsus.
RESULTS: All cases had surgical removal of the masses under general anesthesia. Recurrence of an invasive abdominal lipoma occurred in case 1 at the exit site of a passive drain. The recurrence was treated unsuccessfully with injectable cisplatin, and a second revision surgery with the use of an active drain resulted in resolution. In case 2, complete resection of an encapsulated lipoma of

The clinical, radiographic, ultrasonographic and centesis findings of 97 cattle with disorders of the tarsal region (arthritis, bursitis, tenosynovitis, abscess, vein thrombosis) were reviewed (1994-2006), and the typical ultrasonographic findings of different tarsal disorders in cattle are presented. The following criteria were assessed: echogenicity, echopattern, size, shape, appearance of the borders of synovial or other cavities. Ultrasonographic findings were compared with the clinical, radiographic and arthrocentesis results and with intraoperative and/or necropsy findings. 50 cattle suf

Much evidence suggests an important role for the nervous system in the pathogenesis of peripheral inflammatory conditions such as arthritis. The classical adjuvant-induced arthritis model in the rat is a severe condition in which polyarthritis is accompanied by widespread systemic disease, complicating the interpretation of data. We have developed an adjuvant-induced arthritis of the tibio-tarsal joint in the rat, using a low dose of Freund's adjuvant administered locally. Initial inflammation is followed, after 14 days, by chronic monoarthritis which is maintained without generalised effects

The technique and results of arthroscopic surgery for the treatment of osteochondritis dissecans in 318 tarsocrural joints in 225 horses are reported. Of the 225 horses, 154 were racehorses or intended for racing. Arthroscopic surgery was an effective technique for treating osteochondritis dissecans of the tarsocrural joint. The overall functional ability and cosmetic appearance of the limbs were excellent. Post surgical follow-up information was obtained for 183 horses, of which 140 (76.5 per cent) raced successfully or performed their intended use following surgery. Of the remaining 43, 11 w

External skeletal fixators provide a useful alternative to external coaptation techniques for immobilization of joints in selected patients. This is especially true when the orthopedic injury involves an open wound requiring daily treatment. Devices such as the K-E splint, the Rudy external fixator boot, and acrylic frame fixators are economical and effective for transarticular fixation in small animal patients. Clinical indications for these techniques have included fixation of tibial or radial fractures with a short distal fragment; arthrodesis of the elbow, carpus, stifle, or tarsus; protec
