A functional analysis of hair pulling.

We experimentally assessed the functions of hair pulling and hair manipulation of a 19-year-old woman (Kris) with moderate mental retardation and cerebral palsy. In Phase 1 a functional analysis revealed that Kris pulled and manipulated hair for the greatest amount of time in the alone condition, suggesting that the behaviors were maintained by some form of automatic reinforcement (Vaughan & Michael, 1982). In Phase 2 we assessed the nature of the sensory stimulation that maintained hair pulling by providing continuous access to previously pulled or cut hair and, thereafter, by having Kris wea

Quantifying the added value of foot-controlled force variables in predicting mild cognitive impairment.

Predicting early cognitive decline is important for timely interventions. However, existing approaches for early detection remain limited by cost, scalability, or concerns about their validity. This study evaluated the potential of lower-extremity force control capacities, a largely unexplored area, to improve prediction of cognitive status in older adults with and without Mild Cognitive Impairment (MCI). MCI refers to an early stage of cognitive decline that does not meet criteria for dementia. 224 participants aged 80-91 years completed a foot-pedal tracking task in which they continuously a

Effect of cadence selection on peak power and time of power production in elite BMX riders: A laboratory based study.

The aims of this study were to analyse the optimal cadence for peak power production and time to peak power in bicycle motocross (BMX) riders. Six male elite BMX riders volunteered for the study. Each rider completed 3 maximal sprints at a cadence of 80, 100, 120 and 140 revs · min-1 on a laboratory Schoberer Rad Messtechnik (SRM) cycle ergometer in isokinetic mode. The riders' mean values for peak power and time of power production in all 3 tests were recorded. The BMX riders produced peak power (1105 ± 139 W) at 100 revs · min-1 with lower peak power produced at 80 revs · min-1 (1060 ± 69 W,

Individual differences in motor timing and its relation to cognitive and fine motor skills.

The present study investigated the relationship between individual differences in timing movements at the level of milliseconds and performance on selected cognitive and fine motor skills. For this purpose, young adult participants (N = 100) performed a repetitive movement task paced by an auditory metronome at different rates. Psychometric measures included the digit-span and symbol search subtasks from the Wechsler battery as well as the Raven SPM. Fine motor skills were assessed with the Purdue Pegboard test. Motor timing performance was significantly related (mean r = .3) to cognitive meas

Self-organized complementary joint action: Behavioral dynamics of an interpersonal collision-avoidance task.

Understanding stable patterns of interpersonal movement coordination is essential to understanding successful social interaction and activity (i.e., joint action). Previous research investigating such coordination has primarily focused on the synchronization of simple rhythmic movements (e.g., finger/forearm oscillations or pendulum swinging). Very few studies, however, have explored the stable patterns of coordination that emerge during task-directed complementary coordination tasks. Thus, the aim of the current study was to investigate and model the behavioral dynamics of a complementary col

The performance heuristic: a misguided reliance on past success when predicting prospects for improvement.

In estimating whether they are likely to improve on a performance task, people lean on a performance heuristic. That is, people rely on their previous performance success as a positive cue when estimating their prospects for performance improvement. Participants whose initial performance was better--either at a darts game (Study 1) or an anagram task (Study 2)-bet more money (Study 1) or estimated a higher subjective likelihood (Study 2) that their subsequent performance would show a specified amount of improvement. Reliance on the heuristic was unwise, for initial performance did not positive

Laterality differences in elite ice hockey: an investigation of shooting and catching orientations.

Little is known about the implications of motor asymmetries for skilled performers in dynamic, time-constrained, team-based activities such as ice hockey. Three studies were conducted to examine laterality differences in ice hockey. Study 1 investigated laterality distributions across three leagues of increasing calibre. Among skating players, skill level was related to changes in laterality patterns based on position, while a significant increase in the proportion of left-catching goaltenders was found across the levels of competition. Study 2 examined laterality differences through a 90-year

The SEWAbility system: a video-based job analysis framework for understanding task-specific job demands.

This study introduces the Smart Evaluation of Work Ability (SEWAbility), an AI-powered video analysis system designed to support objective job analysis by deriving task-specific job demands from real-world sewing task videos. SEWAbility processes overhead surveillance footage from factory environments through a hierarchical analytical pipeline. Videos are first clustered into work tasks using 88-dimensional handcrafted features capturing upper-extremity motion trajectories and joint angle statistics. Each task is subdivided into work cycles and further into work elements, from which Repetitive

The Effect of Key Anthropometric and Biomechanics Variables Affecting the Lower Back Forces of Healthcare Workers.

Wearable devices are becoming ubiquitous and can be used to better estimate postures and movements to reduce the risk of injuries. Thirty-three participants were recruited in this study to perform two daily repetitive patient transfer tasks while the full body movements were acquired using a set of magneto-inertial wearable devices. The use of wearable devices allowed for the estimation of the forces provoked on the lower back during the entire task performance. In postures where the forces exceeded the warning threshold found in the literature, healthcare workers were considered to have a gre

Cognitive-motor dual-task interference in Alzheimer's disease, Parkinson's disease, and prodromal neurodegeneration: A scoping review.

BACKGROUND: Cognitive-motor interference (CMI) is a common deficit in Alzheimer's (AD) disease and Parkinson's disease (PD) and may have utility in identification of prodromal neurodegeneration. There is lack of consensus regarding measurement of CMI resulting from dual task paradigms. RESEARCH QUESTION: How are individuals with AD, PD, and prodromal neurodegeneration impacted by CMI as measured by dual-task (DT) performance? METHODS: A systematic literature search was performed in six datasets using the PRISMA guidelines. Studies were included if they had samples of participants with AD, PD

Maintaining Task Performance Levels Under Cognitive Load While Walking Requires Widespread Reallocation of Neural Resources.

This study elucidates the neural mechanisms underlying increasing cognitive load while walking by employing 2 versions of a response inhibition task, the '1-back' version and the more cognitively demanding '2-back' version. By using the Mobile Brain/Body Imaging (MoBI) modality, electroencephalographic (EEG) activity, three-dimensional (3D) gait kinematics and task-related behavioral responses were collected while young adults (n = 61) performed either the 1-back or 2-back response inhibition task. Interestingly, increasing inhibitory difficulty from 1-back to 2-back during walking was not ass

How to minimize the impact of COVID-19 on laparoendoscopic single-site surgery training?

BACKGROUND: Because of special technical challenges, laparoendoscopic single-site surgery (LESS) has been introduced into surgical practice, with surgeons required to have adequate training. The COVID-19 pandemic has significantly affected every aspect of healthcare systems, including LESS training, which must be modified to minimize the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic. METHODS: A 3-session training programme was designed in 2020 during the epidemic, which was modified in 2019 before the pandemic. Session 1 was an online study on LESS knowledge. Session 2 involved the trainees' self-directed

Cognitive Load Impairs Time to Initiate and Complete Shooting Tasks in ROTC Members.

INTRODUCTION: Multitasking typically requires an individual to simultaneously process cognitive information while performing a motor task. Cognitive motor interference (CMi) is encountered when cognitive challenges negatively impact motor task performance. Military personnel encounter cognitively taxing situations, especially during combat or other tactical performance scenarios, which may lead to injury or motor performance deficits (i.e., shooting inaccuracy, delayed stimulus-response time, and slowed movement speed). The purpose of the current study was to develop four cognitive motor shoot

Near-Perfect Automation: Investigating Performance, Trust, and Visual Attention Allocation.

OBJECTIVE: Assess performance, trust, and visual attention during the monitoring of a near-perfect automated system. BACKGROUND: Research rarely attempts to assess performance, trust, and visual attention in near-perfect automated systems even though they will be relied on in high-stakes environments. METHODS: Seventy-three participants completed a 40-min supervisory control task where they monitored three search feeds. All search feeds were 100% reliable with the exception of two automation failures: one miss and one false alarm. Eye-tracking and subjective trust data were collected. RESUL

Effect of Emotional Response on the Performance of a Simulated Laparoscopic Task.

INTRODUCTION: An emotional state impacts task performance and cognition. However, evidence of the effect of an induced emotional state on laparoscopic performance has not yet been documented. We investigated whether surgical residents in whom a positive emotion had been induced would produce a better laparoscopic task performance than residents in whom a negative emotional state had been induced. METHODS: This controlled laboratory study recruited a total of 53 junior surgical residents who were divided into 3 groups. Each group was required to watch 1 of 3 ten-minute videos designed to evoke

Differential Effects of Concurrent Tasks on Gait in Typically Developing Children: A Meta-Analysis.

The objective of this study was to systematically analyze the literature surrounding dual-task (DT) effects on gait in typically developing children (TDC) and to conduct meta-analyses where applicable. After reviewing the abstracts of 676 articles, a total of 22 studies were included. The outcomes of interest were relative change in gait speed, cadence, stride length, double support time, variability in stride length between single and DT walking; and the exposures were concurrent tasks used for DT gait assessment. DT significantly affected each gait parameter (point estimate (PE), ranged from

Task Specific Tremors.

A patient reported bilateral hand tremors when writing but not with other tasks. These "task specific" tremors are considered subcategories of essential tremor. Primary writing tremor, in which the tremor occurs only with writing, is probably the most common. The important teaching point is that the "standard" tremor assessment, watching the patient holding a sustained posture and touching his finger to the examiner's and then back to the nose is not adequate. Patients should be tested doing the activity that causes them the most difficulty.

The role of experience and advanced training on performance in a motorcycle simulator.

Motorcyclists are over-represented in collision statistics. While many collisions may be the direct fault of another road user, a considerable number of fatalities and injuries are due to the actions of the rider. While increased riding experience may improve skills, advanced training courses may be required to evoke the safest riding behaviours. The current research assessed the impact of experience and advanced training on rider behaviour using a motorcycle simulator. Novice riders, experienced riders and riders with advanced training traversed a virtual world through varying speed limits an

Critical roles for distance, task, and motion in space perception: initial conceptual framework and practical implications.

OBJECTIVE: A conceptual framework of visual space perception is proposed. BACKGROUND: Prior studies suggest that the processes underlying space perception depend on viewing distance, the nature of a task, and the presence and nature of motion. METHOD: Evidence from neuropsychological, neuroimaging, and behavioral studies is reviewed. RESULTS: A preliminary conceptual framework of space perception is proposed in which three critical factors of distance, task, and motion represent different dimensions. Different locations within the framework represent the involvement of different underlying
