Exploring small retailers' perspectives on selling tobacco after the tripling of Tasmania's tobacco licence fee.

BACKGROUND: Licensing of tobacco retailers, including high retail licence fees, is one tobacco control measure that may reduce tobacco retail availability. Between 2015 and 2018, the tobacco licence fee in Tasmania, Australia, tripled to $A1132/year. We sought to explore small retailer perspectives on selling tobacco following the tripling of the licence fee. METHODS: In-depth semistructured telephone interviews (n=21) were conducted with business owners and managers between March and July 2020. Participants were asked broad questions about their business, attitudes and intentions towards sel

State-Wide Genomic and Epidemiological Analyses of Vancomycin-Resistant Enterococcus faecium in Tasmania's Public Hospitals.

From 2015 onwards, the number of vancomycin-resistant Enterococcus faecium (VREfm) isolates increased in Tasmania. Previously, we examined the transmission of VREfm at the Royal Hobart Hospital (RHH). In this study, we performed a state-wide analysis of VREfm from Tasmania's four public acute hospitals. Whole-genome analysis was performed on 331 isolates collected from screening and clinical specimens of VREfm. In silico multi-locus sequence typing (MLST) was used to determine the relative abundance of broad sequence types (ST) across the state. Core genome MLST (cgMLST) was then applied to id

Exploration of testing practices and population characteristics support an increase in chlamydia positivity in Tasmania between 2001 and 2010.

OBJECTIVE: The proportion of positive chlamydia tests in young people in Tasmania increased significantly between 2001 and 2010. While female positivity rates increased steadily, male positivity rose steeply to 2005 then stabilised. Crude positivity rates can be influenced by a variety of factors making interpretation difficult. Unique Tasmanian datasets were used to explore whether symptom status, reason for testing or sexual exposure could explain the observed positivity trends. METHODS: Population-level chlamydia positivity rates in Tasmania over a 10-year period were compared with surveil

Serological prevalence study of exposure of cats and dogs in Launceston, Tasmania, Australia to spotted fever group rickettsiae.

A sero-epidemiological study of cats and dogs in the Launceston area of Tasmania, Australia was undertaken to determine the prevalence of antibodies to spotted fever group (SFG) rickettsiae. Results showed that 59% of cats and 57% of dogs were positive for antibodies, but there was no correlation between the animal's health and seropositivity at the time of testing, suggesting that rickettsial exposure is unrelated to ill-health in these two species of domestic animals.

Hearing Loss and Modifiable Dementia Risk Factors in Adults Aged 50 Years or Older Living in Tasmania, Australia.

OBJECTIVE: This study examined the associations between hearing loss (HL) and other modifiable dementia risk factors in adults aged 50 years or older living in Tasmania and explored the effects of corrected versus uncorrected HL on these factors. METHODS: A cross-sectional study design using an online survey categorised participants as No-HL, HL-corrected or HL-uncorrected. Logistic regression estimated the odds of being in higher dementia risk categories. RESULTS: The HL-corrected group was more likely to be in the low-risk alcohol group (OR = 0.567, 95% CI: 0.468-0.687), 28% less likely fo

First genetic analysis of Cryptosporidium from humans from Tasmania, and identification of a new genotype from a traveller to Bali.

Little is known about the molecular composition of Cryptosporidium species from humans living in the insular state of Tasmania, Australia. In the present study, we genetically characterized 82 samples of Cryptosporidium from humans following conventional coproscopic testing in a routine, diagnostic laboratory. Using a PCR-coupled single-strand conformation polymorphism (SSCP) technique, targeting portions of the small subunit rRNA (SSU), and 60 kDa glycoprotein (gp60) loci, we identified two species of Cryptosporidium, including C. hominis (subgenotypes IbA10G2, IdA16, IeA12G3T3, and IfA19G1)

Change in modifiable dementia risk factors during COVID-19 lockdown: The experience of over 50s in Tasmania, Australia.

INTRODUCTION: Containment measures implemented to minimize the spread of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) are reported to be negatively affecting mental health, diet, and alcohol consumption. These factors, as well as poor cardiometabolic health and insufficient physical and cognitive activity, are known to increase the risk of developing dementia. COVID-19 "lockdown" measures may have exacerbated these dementia risk factors among people in mid-to-later life. METHODS: We compared longitudinal data from before (October 2019) and during (April-June 2020) the first COVID-19 lockdown period in

Identity-by-descent approach to gene localisation in eight individuals affected by keratoconus from north-west Tasmania, Australia.

The minimum physical distance surrounding a candidate gene has been determined in founder populations by studying allele sharing and then mapping historical recombination events. In this study, we developed a novel minimalistic approach by using the genetically isolated population of Tasmania, Australia, to identify candidate gene loci in a small number of individuals of unknown genetic relationship affected by a dominant disorder. Keratoconus, an inheritable non-inflammatory progressive degeneration of the cornea, is present at a five-fold increased incidence in Burnie, a coastal town on the

INVESTIGATION INTO INDIVIDUAL HEALTH AND EXPOSURE TO INFECTIOUS AGENTS OF PLATYPUSES (ORNITHORHYNCHUS ANATINUS) IN TWO RIVER CATCHMENTS IN NORTHWEST TASMANIA.

Changes in the health of individuals within wildlife populations can be a cause or effect of population declines in wildlife species. Aspects of individual platypus ( Ornithorhynchus anatinus ) health have been reported. However, holistic studies investigating potential synergistic effects of both pathogens and environmental factors are needed to expand understanding of platypus individual health. We collected baseline data on the health of platypuses in two Tasmanian river catchments (including evidence of the potentially fatal fungal disease mucormycosis) and on individual, demographic, and
