Ethyl loflazepate as a treatment for patients with idiopathic and psychogenic taste disorder.

BACKGROUND: Ethyl loflazepate (EL) is a benzodiazepine derivative that has been reported to activate the gustatory cortex. Our department routinely uses EL as a first-line treatment for idiopathic and psychogenic taste disorders, although little has been reported in the literature with respect to patient outcomes, so we conducted a retrospective study examining its safety and efficacy. METHODS: Between 2008 and 2020, 49 patients (14 males and 35 females; mean age, 62.1 years) were diagnosed with taste disorders and received EL as their only treatment for > 14 days. Severity of taste disorder

Taste disorder involving Hunter's glossitis following total gastrectomy.

We treated five patients with Hunter's glossitis following total gastrectomy. The major complaints of the patients were taste disorder and abnormal glossal sensation. In all five cases, the patient's tongue was red and smooth, and laboratory testing showed the presence of macrocytic anemia and decreased serum concentration of vitamin B12 (cyanocobalamin). Gustometry was carried out in four cases and the results documented the presence of taste disorder. All five patients were treated by administration of vitamin B12, which led to improvements in the appearance of the tongue, the patients' subj

Lactoferrin and zinc sulfate supplementation alleviate cisplatin-induced taste disorder: underlying mechanisms via taste and immune modulation.

Taste disorder is a common chemotherapy-associated consequence that markedly suppresses the appetite of patients and impacts their quality of life. This study investigated the mechanisms of dietary supplementation of lactoferrin (LF), alone or combined with ZnSO₄, in alleviating cisplatin-induced metallic taste disorder using a mouse model. Two-bottle preference (TBP) test demonstrated that both LF and LF+ZnSO₄ supplementation significantly decreased the metallic taste preference ratio from 82.5 ± 9.4% to 24 ± 5.4% and 20 ± 4.0%, respectively. Transcriptomic analysis revealed that LF upregulat

Taste processing in autism spectrum disorder: A translational scoping review.

Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is a neurodevelopmental condition characterized by persistent challenges in social communication and restricted/repetitive behaviors, including sensory atypicalities. Taste processing is critical for assessing the sensory and hedonic properties of food; however, it remains understudied in ASD, which may limit our understanding of the disorder's links to selective eating and nutritional deficits. This scoping review on autistic gustatory functioning followed a predefined protocol. We conducted searches across four databases and identified 37 studies involving huma

A movement disorder specialist gets a taste of his own medicine.

We present a case in which a movement disorder neurologist developed two different hyperkinetic movements due to corticospinal tract hyperexcitability, which resolved completely with surgical removal of an epidural spinal canal tumor. The first-hand description of these movements creates a unique opportunity for enhanced insight into these complex movement phenomena.

Systematic Review and Meta-analysis of Smell and Taste Disorders in COVID-19.

OBJECTIVE: Loss of smell and taste are considered potential discriminatory symptoms indicating triaging for coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) and early case identification. However, the estimated prevalence essential to guide public health policy varies in published literature. This meta-analysis aimed to estimate prevalence of smell and taste loss among COVID-19 patients. DATA SOURCES: We conducted systematic searches of PubMed, Embase, Web of Science, and Google Scholar databases for studies published on the prevalence of smell and taste loss in COVID-19 patients. REVIEW METHODS: Two aut

Do patients with motor neuron disease suffer from disorders of taste or smell?

Olfactory or gustatory dysfunction has been described in patients with motor neuron disease. This disorder along with other degenerative diseases has been tentatively linked with the olfactory vector hypothesis according to which a toxic agent may enter the organism via the nasal mucosa. In our study we assessed 26 patients diagnosed as suffering from motor neuron disease at various stages and compared them with 26 matched controls using 'Sniffin' Sticks' for smell and taste strips for taste testing. The two groups did not differ with respect to either ability. The smell test correlated with a

[Orally administered polaprezinc significantly improves taste disorders in ovarian cancer patient undergoing chemotherapy].

The subject was a 75-year-old female who was receiving paclitaxel and carboplatin(TC)chemotherapy every other week after surgery for ovarian cancer. She greatly complained of taste disorders after four cycles(of every other week administration) of TC chemotherapy. To understand how the taste disorder was caused by chemotherapy objectively, taste examinations were conducted for the patient in our department. These examinations were conducted after receiving the informed consent from the patient. The authors conducted taste examinations for the patient using serum zinc measurement, tongue cell c

A Review of Zinc-L-Carnosine and Its Positive Effects on Oral Mucositis, Taste Disorders, and Gastrointestinal Disorders.

Zinc-L-carnosine (ZnC), also called polaprezinc known as PepZin GI™, is a chelated compound that contains L-carnosine and zinc. It is a relatively new molecule and has been associated with multiple health benefits. There are several studies that support ZnC's benefits in restoring the gastric lining, healing other parts of the gastrointestinal (GI) tract, improving taste disorders, improving GI disorders, and enhancing skin and liver. Oral mucositis is a common complication of cytotoxic radiotherapy and/or chemotherapy. It occurs in almost every person with head and neck cancer who receive rad

Taste disorder in facial onset sensory and motor neuronopathy: a case report.

BACKGROUND: Taste disorder is a common symptom in the general population. Several studies have shown that patients with neurological disorders, such as amyotrophic lateral sclerosis and Parkinson's disease, develop taste disturbance. Facial onset sensory and motor neuronopathy (FOSMN) is a rare disease characterized by sensory disturbance and weakness spreading from the face to the limbs caudally. We describe a patient with FOSMN who showed taste disorder as the sole initial symptom. CASE PRESENTATION: A 49-year-old man who smoked cigarettes developed taste disturbance. Despite using zinc sup
