Associations Between Tattooing and Health Status: A Population-Based Cross-Sectional Study of Adults in Utah, 2020-2022.

OBJECTIVE: Tattooed individuals have reported reduced access to health care and have a higher prevalence of risky health behaviors compared with individuals without tattoos, but the overall health profile of this population is poorly understood. The objective of this study was to characterize associations between tattooing and health status in Utah. METHODS: We used data from approximately 27 000 respondents to the 2020, 2021, and 2022 Utah Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System surveys. We used multivariable Poisson regression to calculate the prevalence ratios (PRs) and 95% CIs associat

Temporary holiday "tattoos" may cause lifelong allergic contact dermatitis when henna is mixed with PPD.

Temporary tattoos are becoming more popular especially among teenagers. For this purpose henna tattoos are usually used. Although pure henna is relatively safe, combining it with other colouring agents such as para-phenylenediamine (PPD), may cause skin sensitisation. Several cases of contact allergy from temporary tattoos have been reported, each with positive reactions to PPD. Six cases of allergic contact reaction to temporary tattoos are reported. In all cases, the responsible agent was PPD. Two were also allergic to black 'henna' hair dye which also contained PPD. They had been sensitised

Special Applications of Medical Tattooing: Contouring and 3D Exemplified by Tattooing of the Nailbed and the Gingiva.

Medical tattooing aims to restore the normality of skin structures in patients who have skin diseases or suffer sequelae after surgical interventions or hazards. There are numerous applications, with tattooing of vitiligo and the nipple areola complex after breast cancer surgery as leading fields. The use of 3D or realistic tattoo techniques has increased the potential of medical tattooing and improved the aesthetic results. The tattooist must have good technical training combined with artistic and creative talents. In this chapter, two innovative applications of medical tattooing will be pres

Abdominal tattoo can be useful to avoid a midline abdominal incision.

We report a case in which abdominal tattoo margins were modified and used to hide the surgical incision for desmoid tumour removal. Our patient is a 37-year-old female with history remarkable for atrial septal defect closure at the age of ten, but not for previous abdominal surgeries or trauma. A desmoid tumour diagnosis was made upon needle biopsy of the 5 × 4 cm2 mass confined to the rectus abdominis. Subsequently, tumour was resected with an incision through the tattoo upper margin and abdominal wall was reconstructed with primary fascial closure mesh reinforced. Excision was radical, scar

Permanent makeup: indications and complications.

Cosmetic tattoos, simulating makeup, have become very popular in the last decades; the technique of micropigmentation consists of implantation of pigment into the skin using a tattoo pen. The procedure can also be used to camouflage vitiligo, to mask scars, and as an adjunct to reconstructive surgery. Risks and complications include infections, allergic reactions, scarring, fanning, fading, and dissatisfaction about color and shape. Lasers offer the best cosmetic result for removal of unwanted tattoos.

Immediate debridement of road rash injuries with Versajet® hydrosurgery: traumatic tattoo prevention?

UNLABELLED: Traumatic tattoos can result from accidental deposition of foreign particles in the dermis. These pigmented particles become permanently lodged in the dermis after re-epithelialization of the wound and can give rise to irregular black or blue discoloration of the skin. Different methods for tattoo removal exist. The best strategy is to prevent traumatic tattooing by immediate removal of the foreign bodies before the healing process has begun. We present a fine-tuned debridement method to selectively debride the wound and preserve as much viable tissue as possible. LEVEL OF EVIDENC

Prospective Comparison Study of 532/1064 nm Picosecond Laser vs 532/1064 nm Nanosecond Laser in the Treatment of Professional Tattoos in Asians.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Although, the pulse width should be shorter than the thermal relaxation time of the target, nanosecond laser pulses are not short enough for tattoo removal. Complications are common, such as hyper or hypopigmentation, textural changes, and scarring. Moreover, patients with darker skin types are at a higher risk of complications from tattoo removal using these lasers. Picosecond lasers were developed to overcome the limitation of nanosecond lasers. We did a comparison study of a 532/1064 nm picosecond laser vs a 532/1064 nm nanosecond laser to evaluate the clinical efficacy

Laser and energy-based device use in skin of color: A clinical review of safety, efficacy, and best practices.

Lasers and energy-based devices are integral to the management of dermatologic conditions, including pigmentary disorders, tattoo removal, vascular lesions, acne scarring, treatment of photoaging, and hair removal. In skin of color (Fitzpatrick types IV-VI), increased epidermal melanin acts as a competing chromophore with a broad absorption spectrum, increasing the risk of adverse effects such as post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation, hypopigmentation, blisters, and scarring. This review synthesizes current evidence on device selection, parameter optimization, and risk mitigation strategies to m

[Skin reactions to tattoo ink].

Ritual and artistic tattoos rely on the use of numerous pigments which are not all entirely inert once placed in the dermis. The compositions of some tattoo inks are identified. However, new but less well identified compounds appear on the market. Allergic reactions can be present under different aspects. They may correspond to allergic contact dermatitis or to photodermatitis. Other reactions include allergic hypersensitivity reactions as well as lichenoid, granulomatous or pseudolymphoma reactions. Pulsed light and laser are typically used for regular tattoo removal. These procedures are not

Are metals involved in tattoo-related hypersensitivity reactions? A case report.

BACKGROUND: Allergic reactions to tattoos are not uncommon. However, identification of the culprit allergen(s) remains challenging. OBJECTIVES: We present a patient with papulo-nodular infiltration of 20-year-old tattoos associated with systemic symptoms that disappeared within a week after surgical removal of metal osteosynthesis implants from his spine. We aimed to explore the causal relationship between the metal implants and the patient's clinical presentation. METHODS: Metal implants and a skin biopsy of a reactive tattoo were analysed for elemental contents by inductively coupled plasm

Treatment of traumatic tattoos with the Q-switched neodymium:YAG laser.

BACKGROUND: Treatment for traumatic tattoos often results in incomplete removal of the pigment or produces unacceptable scars or textural changes. Successful results using Q-switched ruby lasers have been reported. The Q-switched neodymium:YAG laser, with a wavelength of 1064 nm and a pulse duration of 5 to 7 nanoseconds, penetrates deeper into the skin and has less interaction with melanin than the Q-switched ruby laser. OBSERVATIONS: The present study documents 32 cases of traumatic tattoos involving 51 sites of the face, trunk, and extremities in patients ranging in age from 6 to 58 years.

Color Biophysics and the Human Color Perception in Relation to Pigments and Tattooed Skin.

Perception of skin color in the natural state, or with tattoo pigment installed in the dermis is highly complex and includes both optical requisites and eye and brain functions connected to advanced cognitive and psychological functions. Permanent makeup (PMU) is miniaturized tattooing on critical anatomical location aiming at fulfilment of a person's esthetic ideal. It is a special challenge since a satisfactory outcome depends on perfectionated technique and very critical selection of pigments. The eye can be compared to a digital camera, and the center of central vision in the brain to a co

Intense pulsed light.

In addition to lasers, intense pulsed light (IPL) sources are widely used in medicine to treat various indications, such as vascular lesions, irregular pigmentation and hypertrichosis. In contrast to lasers, IPL systems are broadband flash lamps that emit polychromatic incoherent light ranging from visible to infrared (500-1,300 nm). Optical filters are used to tailor the polychromatic light to specific needs. As a broad range of wavelengths are delivered, treatment of multiple chromophores--including melanin, hemoglobin, water and collagen--within the same exposure is possible.

How to Diagnose and Classify Tattoo Complications in the Clinic: A System of Distinctive Patterns.

Tattoo complications represent a broad spectrum of clinical entities and disease mechanisms. Infections are known, but chronic inflammatory reactions have hitherto been inconsistently reported and given many interpretations and terms. A clinical classification system of distinct patterns with emphasis on inflammatory tattoo reactions is introduced. Allergic reactions prevalent in red tattoos and often associated with azo pigments are manifested as the 'plaque elevation', 'excessive hyperkeratosis', and 'ulceronecrotic' patterns. The allergen is a hapten. Nonallergic reactions prevalent in blac

Magnetite tattoos.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Tattoo removal is a significant problem. The extraction of magnetite (Fe(3)O(4)) ink tattoos by a magnetic field was investigated, with and without Q-switched laser treatment. STUDY DESIGN/MATERIALS AND METHODS: Magnetite particles (1.4 microm) were used to make mature, black skin tattoos on hairless albino rats. A Q-switched ruby laser (QSRL) 3.5 J/cm(2), 6.5-mm spot size, 40-nanosecond pulse width was used for treatment. Permanent magnets (1.4 T, 6-mm diameter) were tested to extract the magnetite particles, alone and after QSRL. Lightening of treated tattoos was

Medical tattooing, the new frontiers: a case of nail bed treatment.

The primary objective of medical tattooing is to restore part of a patient's physical integrity. Moreover, the procedure seeks to assist in psychological recovery from the physical and/or psychological consequences of disease, surgery or trauma. The method described in this brief note marks a step forward in the field of such tattooing. The treatment simulates reconstruction of the nail bed, as the nails of the big toes had previously been removed through a surgical avulsion procedure. This treatment, agreed with the physician and performed by a tattooist with proven experience in medical tatt

Axillary Lymph Node Tattooing and Targeted Axillary Dissection in Breast Cancer Patients Who Presented as cN+ Before Neoadjuvant Chemotherapy and Became cN0 After Treatment.

INTRODUCTION: Targeted axillary dissection (TAD) is an alternative to axillary dissection for breast cancer patients who presented as cN+ before neoadjuvant chemotherapy (NAC) and became cN0 after treatment. TAD is defined as the removal of sentinel lymph nodes (SLNs) along with the pre-NAC marked positive nodes. Tattooing is an option to mark positive nodes. In this study we aimed to investigate the identification rate of tattooed nodes during surgery, correspondence between tattooed nodes and SLNs, and difficulties and pitfalls of the method. PATIENTS AND METHODS: In 75 patients who were cN
