Clinical application of therapeutic erythrocytapheresis (TEA).

Therapeutic erythrocytapheresis (TEA) has been used in different diseases such as polycythemia vera (PV), secondary erythrocytosis or hemochromatosis as a process of the less cumbersome but more expensive phlebotomy. TEA is preferred in emergency conditions such as thrombocytosis or in conditions such as porphyria cutanea tarda (PCT) or erythropoietic porphyria when plasma exchange (PEX) is often combined with TEA to reduce extracellular levels of uroporphyrin which contribute to plasma hyperviscosity. TEA is often combined with drug therapy that varies from etoposide in PV to EPO and desferox

Tea tree oil for Demodex blepharitis.

BACKGROUND: Demodex blepharitis is a chronic condition commonly associated with recalcitrant dry eye symptoms though many people with Demodex mites are asymptomatic. The primary cause of this condition in humans is two types of Demodex mites: Demodex folliculorum and Demodex brevis. There are varying reports of the prevalence of Demodex blepharitis among adults, and it affects both men and women equally. While Demodex mites are commonly treated with tea tree oil, the effectiveness of tea tree oil for treating Demodex blepharitis is not well documented. OBJECTIVES: To evaluate the effects of t

Tea Catechins in Green Tea Inhibit the Activity of SARS-CoV-2 Main Protease via Covalent Adduction.

We herein examined the inhibitory effects of tea catechins on the SARS-CoV-2 main protease (Mpro). Among the catechins analyzed, epigallocatechin 3-(3″-O-methyl)gallate, epigallocatechin gallate (EGCG), gallocatechin, gallocatechin gallate, and epigallocatechin inhibited recombinant Mpro in a dose-dependent manner. Peptide mapping revealed that catechins preferentially formed covalent bonds with five sequences with the strongest activity at the C145 active site. Fragmentation analysis indicated 184 cleavages from peptides containing C145, corresponding to the D ring, suggesting that the B ring

Microplastics in tea from planting to the final tea product: Traceability, characteristics and dietary exposure risk analysis.

Tea, sold as tea bags or loose tea, is a popular drink worldwide. We quantified microplastics in loose tea during various stages of production, from planting to processing and brewing. The quantity of microplastics in tea ranged from (70-3472 pcs/kg), with the highest abundance detected during processing, mainly in the rolling stage (2266 ± 1206 pcs/kg tea). Scanning electron microcopy revealed scratches and pits on the surface of microplastics fibers from tea plantation soil and processed tea, and their degradation was characterized by cracks and fractures. Exposure risks, based on an estimat

Interactions among chemical components of Cocoa tea (Camellia ptilophylla Chang), a naturally low caffeine-containing tea species.

In the 1980s, a novel tea species, Cocoa tea (Camellia ptilophylla Chang), was discovered in Southern China with surprisingly low caffeine content (0.2% by dry weight). Although its health promoting characteristics have been known for a while, a very limited amount of scientific research has been focused on Cocoa tea. Herein, a systematic study on Cocoa tea and its chemical components, interactions and bioactivities was performed. YD tea (Yunnan Daye tea, Camellia sinensis), a tea species with a high caffeine content (5.8% by dry weight), was used as a control. By UV-Vis spectrometry, High Per

Green tea consumption and chronic atrophic gastritis: a cross-sectional study in a green tea production village.

Chronic atrophic gastritis (CAG) is well known as a precancerous lesion of the stomach, and Helicobacter pylori (H. pylori) infection increases the risk of CAG. While recent studies have reported that green tea consumption decreases the risk of gastric cancer, there has been no study analyzing the relationship between green tea consumption and the both risks H. pylori infection and CAG. We conducted a cross-sectional study on 636 subjects living in a farming village in Japan to examine the relationship among green tea consumption, H. pylori infection, and CAG. Smoking, alcohol drinking, consum

Impact of Warm-Air Withering Methods on Aroma Quality of White Teas from Four Tea Cultivars.

While withering is a critical processing step influencing the flavor profile of white teas, the effects of temperature-changing withering remain elusive. This study systematically investigated the variations in two withering methods (natural withering, temperature-changing withering) in volatile compounds of white teas made from four cultivars. The quality of white teas produced from 'Mingshan No. 131' (MS131), 'Fuxuan No. 9' (FX9), 'Ziyan' (ZY), and 'Fudingdabai' (FDDB) was evaluated using quantitative descriptive analysis (QDA), headspace solid-phase microextraction coupled with gas chromato

The Impact of Brewing Water pH on Green Tea Infusion Flavor Quality: A Microstructural Perspective of Tea Leaves.

The pH of brewing water plays a significant role in shaping the microstructure of tea leaves, thereby affecting the flavor profile of green tea infusions. In this study, green tea was brewed using water with seven different pH levels to examine microstructural alterations and their impact on flavor quality. Results showed that the contents of total volatile compounds, tea polyphenols, and soluble sugars initially decreased and then increased with rising water pH, a trend consistent with changes in the degree of tea leaf damage. This indicates that the damage status of the leaves considerably i

Tea processing shapes the structural characteristics and gut microbiota-modulating potential of polysaccharides from the fresh summer tea.

In this study, fresh summer tea leaves from the same cultivar and batch were processed into green, black, and dark (post-fermented) teas, and the corresponding polysaccharides (GTP, BTP, DTP) were subsequently extracted. Their digestive stability and gut microbial fermentability were evaluated. Simulated digestion of polysaccharides showed their strong resistance to enzymatic hydrolysis. In vitro anaerobic fermentation demonstrated GTP, BTP, and DTP could be effectively utilized by gut microbiota, resulting in increased production of short-chain fatty acids (SCFAs). Microbial analysis revealed

Salicylhydroxamic acid (SHAM) negatively mediates tea herbivore-induced direct and indirect defense against the tea geometrid Ectropis obliqua.

We investigated the effect of the SHAM treatment of tea plants on their induced defense on a tea geometrid (TG), Ectropis obliqua Prout. Treatment of tea leaves with SHAM reduced the performance of TG and TG-elicited level of the lipoxygenase gene CsiLOX1 and the putative allene oxide synthase gene CsiAOS1. The release of wound-induced green leaf volatiles (GLVs) and the expression of the hydroperoxide lyase (HPL) gene CsiHPL1 were also reduced by SHAM treatment. The negative effect of SHAM dramatically reduced the total hebivore-induced plant volatiles (HIPVs) and the attractiveness to the pa

Comparative analysis of taste profiles and metabolic characteristics in white tea processed from wild and cultivated tea plants.

BACKGROUND: Wild tea trees represent valuable germplasm resources, with distinctive chemical characteristics and environmental resilience, but the biochemical basis underlying their flavor characteristics and potential contribution to white tea quality remain poorly understood. As a minimally processed tea, white tea provides a useful system for examining how differences among wild and cultivated raw materials are reflected in metabolite composition and sensory quality. RESULTS: White teas produced from a wild super-large-leaf type (LWT), a wild small-leaf type (SWT), and the cultivated culti
