The effect of milk on recovery from repeat-sprint cycling in female team-sport athletes.

The consumption of milk following eccentric exercise attenuates the effects of muscle damage in team-sport athletes. However, participation in team sport involves both concentric-eccentric loading and metabolic stress. Therefore, the aim of this study was to investigate the effects of postexercise milk consumption on recovery from a cycling protocol designed to simulate the metabolic demands of team sport. Ten female team-sport athletes participated in a randomised crossover investigation. Upon completion of the protocol participants consumed 500 mL of milk (MILK) or 500 mL of an energy-matche

Sports and exercise cardiology in the United States: cardiovascular specialists as members of the athlete healthcare team.

In recent years, athletic participation has more than doubled in all major demographic groups, while simultaneously, children and adults with established heart disease desire participation in sports and exercise. Despite conferring favorable long-term effects on well-being and survival, exercise can be associated with risk of adverse events in the short term. Complex individual cardiovascular (CV) demands and adaptations imposed by exercise present distinct challenges to the cardiologist asked to evaluate athletes. Here, we describe the evolution of sports and exercise cardiology as a unique d

Personality Determinants of Exercise-Related Nutritional Behaviours among Polish Team Sport Athletes.

A proper diet increases the effectiveness of training and accelerates post-workout regeneration. One of the factors determining eating behaviour are personality traits, including those included in the Big Five model, i.e., neuroticism, extraversion, openness, agreeableness, and conscientiousness. The aim of this study was to analyse the personality determinants of peri-exercise nutritional behaviours among an elite group of Polish athletes practicing team sports. The study was conducted in a group of 213 athletes, using the author's validated questionnaire of exercise-related nutrition behavio

Relative Age and Maturity Timing in Youth Team Sports: Associations with Body Size and Vertical Jump Performance.

Relative age effect (RAE) and biological maturation can significantly impact athlete selection. This study examined the presence of RAE in youth team invasion sports and assessed whether the timing of maturity influences body size and lower-body explosive strength. Athletes were grouped by age category (U14, U16, U18), and the distribution of birth quartiles was analyzed. Maturity timing was estimated using age at peak height velocity (APHV), and lower-body explosive strength was evaluated through jumping performance. Comparisons across age groups showed progressive increases in body size and

From observation to immersion: A comparative analysis of emerging technologies for developing decision-making in team sport.

In many high-performance team sports, physical ability alone is insufficient for consistent success. Increasingly, perceptual-cognitive skills, such as in-game decision-making, have been recognized as critical differentiators among elite athletes. We conducted a comparative analysis to explore how emerging technologies can be used to study and enhance decision-making in situ, within dynamic environments representative of team sport. In doing so, we discuss strengths and limitations of four popular technologies: 2D video analysis, 360° video, mobile eye-tracking, and immersive virtual reality (

Effects of unilateral and bilateral training on performance in team sports athletes: a systematic review and meta-analysis.

Team sports athletes rely heavily on unilateral movements, yet the comparative performance benefits of unilateral training (UT) versus bilateral training (BT) remain controversial. This meta-analysis systematically examined the effects of UT and BT on strength, jumping, sprinting, and agility in team sports, while considering sport type and training program as potential moderators. A systematic search of PubMed, Web of Science, Cochrane Library, and CNKI databases was conducted to identify controlled trials meeting the PICOS criteria. Primary outcomes were strength, jumping (countermovement ju

Are Team Sports Effective in Improving Mental Health? A Systematic Review on the Primary Outcomes of Anxiety and Mood.

INTRODUCTION: Team Sports (TSG) have been discussed as an accessible and socially engaging way to support mental health. Although this idea is intuitively appealing and supported by several observational findings, the actual consistency of their effects on anxiety and mood in adults who do not have diagnosed mental disorders remains uncertain. The study aims to map how TSG has been investigated in this context and to systematically synthesize current evidence on their effects on anxiety and mood (PROSPERO: CRD420251121611). METHODS: This systematic review followed PRISMA 2020 recommendations.
