Comparison of Online Sexual Activity Among Iranian Individuals With and Without Substance Use Disorder: A Case-Control Study.

The most important practical concerns in addiction medicine are the non-substance addiction and related addictive behaviors among individuals with substance use disorder. On the other hand, technological advances, and easy access have increased the frequency of online sexual activities (OSAs) as one of these behaviors. This study aimed to compare the prevalence of OSAs, based on the Internet Sex Screening Test (ISST) scores, among 60 patients with substance use disorder referred to Iran Psychiatric Hospital and 60 non-dependent individuals. The results showed significant negative correlations

Internet addiction is associated with psychological distress in highly schizotypal students.

BACKGROUND: There is some limited evidence of an association between technology addictions and emergence of pre-psychotic symptoms, high psychoticism, psychotic like experiences and high schizotypy among young non-clinical adults. These addictions and their subsequent distress are likely to contribute to transition to psychosis in individuals at risk. We aimed to compare smartphone, Internet and Facebook addictions between low and high schizotypal individuals; and to explore the association between these addictions and distress in the high schizotypy group. METHODS: From a pool of 700 student

[Addictive behavior among teenagers: new trends].

The majority of teenagers benefit from scientific advances, whether pharmacological or technological, but the most vulnerable use them to their detriment. While only certain substances or activities are potentially "addictive", the psyche, personality and environment play a major role in the onset of an addiction. Pleasure-seeking motivates gambling and drug use. Suffering will drive the adolescent to pursue this practice, which provides pleasure and relief, to the detriment of any other activity. It becomes exclusive, toxic and alienating. The therapist must rise to the challenge.

Personality Traits that Predispose or Protect in Smartphone Addiction and Their Implications for Intervention: A Narrative Review.

Technological advancement has transformed nearly every aspect of modern life. Nonetheless excessive use of smartphone has become a matter of concern. Adolescents and young adults tend to be more attached or addictive to smartphones and their effects are seen either physically or psychologically. However, there are still no established diagnostic criteria for smartphone addiction in The Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, 5th Edition. The present review aimed at looking into the available evidence of personality factors in connection with smartphone use and thereby exploring

Hypermethylation of the κ1 opioid receptor promoter in Chinese heroin and methamphetamine addicts.

Heroin and methamphetamine (METH) addiction continues to be a major social, economic and therapeutic problem worldwide. The opioid pathway may mediate the effects of addictive drugs. However, the potential correlation between the κ1 opioid receptor (OPRK1) and drug addiction has not yet been characterized. The aim of the present study was to investigate the potential association between methylation of the OPRK1 promoter and substance abuse. Bisulfite pyrosequencing technology was used to determine the levels of OPRK1 promoter methylation in 60 drug abusers (30 heroin and 30 METH addicts) and 5

Maternal Loneliness and Technoference During Early Childhood: The Mediating Roles of Nomophobia and Social Media Addiction.

Maternal technoference has increasingly been recognized as a factor that may compromise mothers' emotional availability and the quality of mother-child interactions, particularly during early childhood, when responsive caregiving and co-regulation play a pivotal role in children's development. However, the psychological mechanisms underlying this phenomenon remain poorly understood. Maternal loneliness may represent an important vulnerability factor, although the processes linking loneliness to technoference have yet to be clarified. This study examined whether nomophobia and social media addi

A significant association between BDNF promoter methylation and the risk of drug addiction.

As a member of the neurotrophic factor family, brain derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) plays an important role in the survival and differentiation of neurons. The aim of our work was to evaluate the role of BDNF promoter methylation in drug addiction. A total of 60 drug abusers (30 heroin and 30 methylamphetamine addicts) and 52 healthy age- and gender-matched controls were recruited for the current case control study. Bisulfite pyrosequencing technology was used to determine the methylation levels of five CpGs (CpG1-5) on the BDNF promoter. Among the five CpGs, CpG5 methylation was significa

Impulsivity as a Risk Factor for Addictive Disorder Severity during the COVID-19 Lockdown: Results from a Mixed Quantitative and Qualitative Study.

Interindividual differences in personality traits, especially impulsivity traits, are robust risk factors for addictive disorders. However, their impact on addictive disorders during the COVID-19 lockdown remains unknown. This study assessed patients being followed for addictive disorders before the lockdown. We aimed to determine whether impulsivity traits (i.e., negative- and positive urgency) were associated with addictive disorders severity during the lockdowns. We also explored the patients' subjective experiences, focusing on high versus low impulsivity. The quantitative study assessed 4

Diazepam filled hard capsules intended for detoxification of patients addicted to benzodiazepines and Z-drugs.

OBJECTIVES: The abuse of benzodiazepines and Z-drugs reduces the quality of life of millions of addicted people worldwide. They cannot be discontinued abruptly due to harmful withdrawal symptoms. Detoxification is usually based on replacement of short/middle acting benzodiazepines or Z-drugs by diazepam and tapering the dose over time. In order to enhance patient adherence to an individual withdrawal plan, suitable diazepam dosage forms have to be available. Hard capsules containing an exact and uniform dose could be used for the relief of symptoms caused by altering the plasma level and overc

Prerequisites for stakeholder framework: Consumer advocacy and health protection in the digital industry. •

The World Health Organization (WHO) included gaming disorders in International Classification of Disease-11th (ICD-11) on May 25, 2019. Since then, some academics and the gaming industry have continued to argue over the health system's response to online addictive behaviors. Under these circumstances, a framework involving groups representing various interests is needed to derive a reasonable solution to the dispute over the inclusion of gaming disorders in ICD-11. For this framework to work effectively, it is necessary to agree on consistent and advanced research findings that harms related t

Genes and pathways co-associated with the exposure to multiple drugs of abuse, including alcohol, amphetamine/methamphetamine, cocaine, marijuana, morphine, and/or nicotine: a review of proteomics analyses.

Drug addiction is a chronic neuronal disease. In recent years, proteomics technology has been widely used to assess the protein expression in the brain tissues of both animals and humans exposed to addictive drugs. Through this approach, a large number of proteins potentially involved in the etiology of drug addictions have been identified, which provide a valuable resource to study protein function, biochemical pathways, and networks related to the molecular mechanisms underlying drug dependence. In this article, we summarize the recent application of proteomics to profiling protein expressio

What does addiction medicine expect from neuroscience? From genes and neurons to treatment responses.

The field of neuroscience is rapidly growing as evidenced by the mapping of the human genome, the progress in brain imaging technologies, and the refinement of sophisticated molecular tools that can be combined with innovative preclinical models. With these advances, it seems that our understanding of processes underlying addiction has never been so great. In comparison, the clinical domain has evolved at a much slower pace. Nonetheless, the addiction medical field has seen some gradual improvements in clinical care with the availability of a larger range of pharmacological options. Notably, s
