Telerehabilitation systems have transformed the management of balance and gait impairments, particularly in older adults with chronic low back pain. This study integrates multimodal balance exercises, cognitive retraining, and augmented reality within the HOLOBALANCE system. Using data from an eight-week rehabilitation program, predictive models based on machine learning (XGBoost and AdaBoost) were developed to estimate final balance outcomes using as few as 3 to 6 sessions. The results indicate that XGBoost performs optimally for shorter prediction horizons (i.e., 3-4 sessions) with RMSE valu

Home-based pulmonary telerehabilitation (PTR) has been proposed to be equivalent to supervised outpatient pulmonary rehabilitation (PR) but available randomised trials have failed to reach the minimal important changes (MIC). The purpose of this study was to analyse the proportion of MIC responders and non-responders on short-term (10 weeks from baseline) and long-term (62 weeks from baseline) in total and between groups in 134 patients with COPD randomised (1:1) to either home-based PTR or traditional hospital-based outpatient PR. Difference between PTR and PR on 6MWD response proportion coul

RATIONALE: Pulmonary rehabilitation is an effective treatment for people with chronic respiratory disease but is delivered to <5% of eligible individuals. This study investigated whether home-based telerehabilitation was equivalent to centre-based pulmonary rehabilitation in people with chronic respiratory disease.
METHODS: A multicentre randomised controlled trial with assessor blinding, powered for equivalence was undertaken. Individuals with a chronic respiratory disease referred to pulmonary rehabilitation at four participating sites (one rural) were eligible and randomised using conceale

The COVID-19 pandemic necessitated a sudden limitation of in-person outpatient occupational and physical therapy services for most patients at a large, multisite pediatric hospital located in the Midwest, United States. To ensure patient and staff safety, the hospital rapidly shifted to deliver most of these services via telerehabilitation. The purposes of this study were to (1) describe the rapid implementation of telerehabilitation during the COVID-19 pandemic, (2) describe the demographic characteristics of patients who continued in-person services and those who received telerehabilitation,

Although telerehabilitation has demonstrated effectiveness comparable to traditional face-to-face rehabilitation for low back pain and joint replacement, the lack of standardized protocols after lumbar spine surgery hinders optimal recovery. We mapped existing evidence on telerehabilitation interventions for patients undergoing lumbar spine surgery, focusing on intervention characteristics, identifying evidence gaps, and providing insights for clinical implementation. We searched PubMed, Web of Science, and Physiotherapy Evidence Database for studies published between January 2000 and April 20

Telerehabilitation has proved to be a useful tool for neurodevelopmental disorders in allowing timely and intensive intervention and preventing relapses; it is also widely used for specific learning disabilities (SLD), showing significant effects on reading abilities, but variables linked to its effectiveness have not been studied yet. The present study was aimed at testing the effectiveness of telerehabilitation on reading and writing in SLD children, comparing different treatment pathways, and considering the impact of training intensity and executive functions. Seventy-three children were e

BACKGROUND: The COVID-19 pandemic has forced many cardiac rehabilitation centres to focus more on the remote delivery of cardiac rehabilitation (CR) components. This increased focus and the lessons learned from this period could enhance the implementation of telerehabilitation and increase the participation in CR in Belgium.
METHODS: We conducted a survey between April and May 2020 about the implementation of telerehabilitation services during the COVID-19 pandemic. The electronic questionnaire was sent via email to the heads of 42 Belgian CR centres. Three reminders via email were sent durin

Telerehabilitation (telerehab) offers cost-effective services that potentially can improve access to care for those with acquired neurologic communication disorders. However, regulatory issues including licensure, reimbursement, and threats to privacy and confidentiality hinder the routine implementation of telerehab services into the clinical setting. Despite these barriers, rapid technological advances and a growing body of research regarding the use of telerehab applications support its use. This article reviews the evidence related to acquired neurologic speech and language disorders in ad

SYNOPSIS: This editorial draws an analogy between the transition from "faster horses" to automobiles and the digital transition facing musculoskeletal physical therapy. Musculoskeletal rehabilitation has long emphasized face-to-face sessions; digital solutions such as telerehabilitation have often been perceived as alternatives to conventional care. However, increasing rehabilitation demands, persistent gaps between sessions, and the need for long-term patient support highlight the importance of rethinking how physical therapists deliver care. We argue that telerehabilitation should not replac

INTRODUCTION: Osteoarthritis (OA) of the knee is a leading cause of pain and disability among adults, resulting in structural and functional compromise of synovial joints. Neuromuscular training (NMT) has demonstrated benefits in managing OA; however, its delivery through telerehabilitation remains underexplored. This study aimed to evaluate the effectiveness of NMT delivered via telerehabilitation in patients with primary knee OA.
METHODS: This interventional cohort study included 30 patients diagnosed with primary tibiofemoral OA at the Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation (PMR) outpatient

BACKGROUND: Acquired homonymous visual field defects (HVFDs) result in significant disability, reducing quality of life. Spontaneous recovery occurs within the first months, then the likelihood of vision recovery decreases, making rehabilitation necessary. HVFDs rehabilitation is typically lengthy and intensive, done on an outpatient basis, hardly compatible with the return to everyday life. Telerehabilitation represents an option for continuing the therapy in the chronic phase of the disease, offering long-term support after hospital discharge. It also allows individuals with HVFDs to exercis

Paper-based or IT tools can be used in telerehabilitation mode to improve the skills of children with developmental dyslexia (DD), seeking to increase reading speed and reduce errors. Telerehabilitation is the provision of remote treatments in which the patient works autonomously in a familiar environment under the remote monitoring, through telecommunication means, of an expert operator. Through telerehabilitation, children with DD can receive treatments outside the specialist clinic, at home or school, via internet connections, and through advanced technological platforms. These procedures a

BACKGROUND: Telerehabilitation is an approach that is growing in importance and rapidly becoming more prevalent. However, the potential barriers to this approach and its effectiveness relative to face-to-face treatment still need to be determined.
PURPOSE: The aim of this study was to investigate the technology and access barriers, implementation and organizational challenges, and communication barriers faced by patients undergoing postoperative telerehabilitation after hand tendon repair surgery. It also aimed to investigate the effect of telerehabilitation on pain, kinesiophobia, and functi

IntroductionAt a rate of more than 30% annually, neck pain is a very prevalent musculoskeletal ailment that is second only to low back pain as the most common cause of disability. Most occurrences of neck pain are nonspecific. Telerehabilitation is regarded as a potentially effective healthcare approach in this setting. This review aims to evaluate how a telerehabilitation-based intervention affected individuals with nonspecific neck pain (NNP) in terms of pain and disability.MethodsPubMed, Web of Science, Scopus, Embase, MEDLINE, Cochrane library, ClinicalTrials.gov, CNKI, and WanFang were co

AIMS: Despite strong recommendations, outpatient cardiac rehabilitation is underused in chronic heart failure (CHF) patients. Possible barriers are frailty, accessibility, and rural living, which may be overcome by telerehabilitation. We designed a randomized, controlled trial to evaluate the feasibility of a 3-month real-time, home-based telerehabilitation, high-intensity exercise programme for CHF patients who are either unable or unwilling to participate in standard outpatient cardiac rehabilitation and to explore outcomes of self-efficacy and physical fitness at 3 months post-intervention.
