"The impact of COVID-19 on employee productivity and the future of remote work".

PURPOSE: This paper explores the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on employee productivity and the future of remote work beyond the pandemic years. Using data collected from 646 remote workers, we examined the influence of interpersonal relations, time management, stress, and skill development on productivity. DESIGN/METHODOLOGY/APPROACH: We validated our model using structural equation modelling (SEM), and the results revealed that the sudden shift to remote work had no significant negative impact on productivity. FINDINGS: The results of this study may encourage HR managers to expand remote

Is working from home changing the meaning of work?

Especially since the COVID-19 pandemic, working from home (WFH) has become a common practice in the workplace. This raises the question of whether WFH changes the non-monetary benefits of work, such as job quality or social contacts. Thus, in this article, we investigate how working from home affects Jahoda's latent functions of employment as well as job quality measures. To this end, we use panel data from the German Panel Study Labour Market and Social Security (PASS) and estimate the effects of changing work patterns on the aforementioned outcomes. Our findings reveal basically no effects o

Making daily decisions to work from home or to work in the office: The impacts of daily work- and COVID-related stressors on next-day work location.

To protect workers' safety while gradually resuming on-site operations amid the COVID-19 pandemic, many organizations are offering employees the flexibility to decide their work location on a daily basis (i.e., whether to work from home or to work in the office on a particular day). However, little is known about what factors drive employees' daily decisions to work from home versus office during the pandemic. Taking a social ecological perspective, we conceptualize employees' daily choice of work location (home vs. office) as a way to cope with stressors they have encountered on the previous

Unequal Occupational Conditions When Work Turns Digital: The Case of Schoolteachers.

Telework has significantly increased in the aftermath of COVID-19 lockdowns. However, it is unclear how working conditions for the same job differ when work is conducted in-person versus remotely and online, and whether occupational health risks can be considered as equal across formats. Our study examined schoolteachers to understand online versus in-person teaching work and health conditions. Focus groups and interviews about online teaching took place in 2023 to 2024 with 47 Canadian teachers and tutors who teach from kindergarten to Grade 12. We identified 5 key areas where synchronous onl

Comparison of 24-Hour Movement Behaviors in Desk Workers Across Office and Work From Home Locations.

OBJECTIVE: Work from home (WFH) is increasingly common, although 24-hour movement behaviors during WFH have rarely been studied. The goal of this study was to compare behaviors among WFH and office-based desk workers. METHODS: This was a secondary analysis of baseline data from the RESET BP randomized clinical trial among inactive desk workers from 2017-2022 ( N = 275). Twenty-four-hour behaviors were measured using wrist and thigh-worn accelerometers along with questionnaires. RESULTS: WFH accumulated significantly higher device-measured prolonged sedentary behavior (+0.4 hr/d) and self-rep

Platform-Mediated Gig Work and Health: A Scoping Review.

BACKGROUND: We sought to assess the size, depth, and rigor of empirical literature on platform-mediated gig work and health. METHODS: We conducted a scoping review of peer-reviewed studies from January 1, 2000, through May 29, 2024, that examined platform-mediated gig work and any measure of physical or mental health. We abstracted country, study design, population, sample size, exposure measure, and health outcome. We assessed whether the study addressed any of three potential mechanisms connecting gig work and health: occupational hazards, social determinants, or the specific nature of digi

(Tele)Work and Care during Lockdown: Labour and Socio-Familial Restructuring in Times of COVID-19.

COVID-19, and the lockdown requirement, altered our daily lives, including the restructuring of work and socio-familial organisation of millions of people. Through two studies, we explored how workers experienced this period. The first, qualitative study (N = 30) aimed to understand how workers lived through lockdown by identifying the key elements that shaped their experiences. Thematic content analysis revealed four emerging themes: (1) work and socio-health situation in which lockdown was experienced; (2) consequences on work organisation and resources available for change; (3) work-life ba

Regulatory Challenges in the COVID-19 Era: The Case of Tunisia.

In view of the possible disruptions in the manufacturing and supply of health products following the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic, the Tunisian medicines regulatory authority was mobilized to guarantee patient safety. Teleworking has become the ultimate way of service continuity. The planning was revised according to health priorities. Work procedures were set online. A minimum list of medicines known as "medicines of health and strategic interest" was established. The Directorate of Pharmacy and Medicines (DPM) has been working on updating medicines stock data. Ill at home, still at work? Working from home practices and sickness presenteeism.

Working from home has increased globally during the COVID-19 pandemic. Yet, its implications for sickness presenteeism (i.e., working while ill) remain insufficiently understood. We examine formal and informal working from home practices and their associations with sickness presenteeism, considering segmentation preferences and pre-pandemic working from home experience. Using two representative German workforce survey waves (2019: N = 5,363; 2021: N = 10,049), we find that informal working from home was associated with higher sickness presenteeism propensity and more sickness presenteeism days

Does accelerometer-measured physical activity and sedentary time differ between manual, in-office, hybrid and remote workers?

OBJECTIVES: Studies on accelerometer-measured daily physical activity behaviour, especially among hybrid and remote workers, are scarce. We compared daily occupational and non-occupational physical activity and sedentary time among manual, in-office, hybrid and remote workers. In addition, physical activity behaviour during remote and office workdays among hybrid workers was compared. METHODS: Daily physical activity behaviour was collected with wrist-worn accelerometers on ≥4 days from 133 Finnish workers (31 years, 61% women). Participants were divided into four groups according to their wo

Computer and Furniture Affecting Musculoskeletal Problems and Work Performance in Work From Home During COVID-19 Pandemic.

OBJECTIVES: We surveyed how home-working conditions, specifically furniture and computer use, affected self-reported musculoskeletal problems and work performance. METHODS: Questionnaires from 4112 homeworkers were analyzed. The relationship between subjective musculoskeletal problems or work performance and working conditions were determined by logistic regression analyses. RESULTS: More than half the homeworkers used a work desk, work chair, and laptop computer. However, approximately 20% of homeworkers used a low table, floor chair/floor cushion, or other furniture that was different from

Mental Health and (Online) Behaviors during the COVID-19 Pandemic in Spain: A Network-Based Approach.

The COVID-19 pandemic has contributed to the increase in mortality and morbidity rates globally, but it has also led to a generalized worsening of mental health and risk behaviors in different population groups regardless of the measures adopted by different governments. In this paper, using data from a Spanish survey of emotional well-being, we aim to explore through mixed graphical models the complex structure of relationships between the mental health of populations, their lifestyles, and forms of cultural and leisure consumption during the pandemic. The results bring to light some interest

Boario Home Care Project: an Italian telemedicine experience.

The use of telemedicine appears particularly promising in cardiovascular disease, because the cost/effectiveness ratio of an early, tailored intervention, in terms of life-saving and functional recovery is demonstrated. Boario Home Care project was born in 1998, with the aim of applying the new models of disease management and the new technology on the territory. In the first phase the project was to realize a telematic network for the General Practitioners in a mountain territory; In the second phase the project was extended to the regional and then national territory and the number of enroll

How Do COVID-19 Vaccine Policies Affect the Young Working Class in the Philippines?

Dubbed the "inequality virus", coronavirus disease (COVID-19) has unveiled and magnified many of the global society's long-standing inequalities and health inequities. This work brings together the phenomena of increased inequality and health inequities felt by the poor and young working class of the Philippines and how they interact negatively with existing vaccine policies. The poor and the young were more likely to have experienced employment disruptions with limited access to technologies that allowed for teleworking. Informal economy workers suffered from diminished labor protection and d

Home alone: Remote work, isolation, and mental health.

How does remote work affect isolation and mental health? We drew on five nationally representative surveys of American workers (N = 588,322) conducted from 2011 to 2024, omitting the peak pandemic years of 2020-2021. Our difference-in-differences approach compared changes in mental health among people in remotable jobs-who experienced a large and persistent rise in remote work since COVID-19-to people in nonremotable jobs, where remote work increased far less. We found that remote work increases time spent alone, worsens mental well-being across multiple measures, and increases the use of ment
