Factors influencing deviation from target temperature during targeted temperature management in postcardiac arrest patients.

BACKGROUND: Targeted temperature management (TTM) is a recommended therapy for postcardiac arrest patients. Hyperthermia worsened the patient outcome, and overcooling increased the incidence of complications; therefore, a high-quality TTM is required. The target temperature tended to be modified worldwide after the TTM trial in 2013. Our institute modified the target temperature to 35°C in 2017. This study aimed to compare the conventional and modified protocols, assess the relationship between target temperature deviation and patient outcomes, and identify the factors influencing temperature

Influence of low ambient temperature on epitympanic temperature measurement: a prospective randomized clinical study.

BACKGROUND: Epitympanic temperature (Tty) measured with thermistor probes correlates with core body temperature (Tcore), but the reliability of measurements at low ambient temperature is unknown. The aim of this study was to determine if commercially-available thermistor-based Tty reflects Tcore in low ambient temperature and if Tty is influenced by insulation of the ear. METHODS: Thirty-one participants (two females) were exposed to room (23.2 ± 0.4 °C) and low (-18.7 ± 1.0 °C) ambient temperature for 10 min using a randomized cross-over design. Tty was measured using an epitympanic probe (M

Noninvasive temperature measurement method for hyperthermia treatment using ferromagnetic implant with low curie temperature.

Induction heating using 'ferromagnetic implant with low Curie temperature (FILCT)' is one of the heating methods for hyperthermia. However, a lot of energy is needed to heat malignant tumors; the heating efficiency has to be improved. In order to address this problem, we propose using FILCT as a probe for temperature. A non-invasive temperature measurement system was developed based on this approach. A key advantage of this system is that it can noninvasively distinguish whether the temperature of FILCT has reached the Curie temperature or not. As a result, materials with high heating efficien

IMPROVED TEMPERATURE-GRADIENT INCUBATOR AND THE MAXIMAL GROWTH TEMPERATURE AND HEAT RESISTANCE OF SALMONELLA.

An improved all-metal temperature-gradient incubator produces its gradient by means of a bar permanently installed in a near-vertical position with its lower end in a cool constant-temperature water bath and with thermostatically controlled heaters near its top. Bolts hold the incubator in contact with the temperature-gradient bar, and polyurethane foam insulates the entire assemblage during use. Maximal growth temperatures of 34 representative strains of Salmonella were found to be between 43.2 and 46.2 C. In an agar medium with an initial level of 10(6) cells per milliliter, no strain surviv

Brachial arterial temperature as an indicator of core temperature: proof of concept and potential applications.

There is potential for heat loss and hypothermia during anesthesia and also for hyperthermia if heat conservation and active warming measures are not accurately titrated. Accurate temperature monitoring is particularly important in procedures in which the patient is actively cooled and then rewarmed such as during cardiopulmonary bypass surgery (CPB). We simultaneously measured core, nasopharyngeal, and brachial artery temperatures to investigate the last named as a potential peripheral temperature monitoring site. Ten patients undergoing hypothermic CPB were instrumented for simultaneous moni

Relationship Between Rectal Temperature and Infrared Temperatures of a Goat's External Body Surfaces.

Measuring rectal temperature is a common method for assessing the body temperature in animals in response to changes in physiology, health, and emotions. However, non-invasive infrared thermography is a more advanced technique that reduces the stress associated with restraining animals and minimises risks related to cross-contamination and disease transmission. The present study investigated the association between rectal temperature (RT) and infrared temperature (IRT) of the goat's external body surfaces. A total of one hundred thirteen (113) goats were considered for this study, and those th

The temperature of intracellular ice formation in mouse oocytes vs. the unfrozen fraction at that temperature.

We have previously reported [Cryobiology 51 (2005) 29-53] that intracellular ice formation (IIF) in mouse oocytes suspended in various concentrations of glycerol and ethylene glycol (EG) occurs at temperatures where the percentage of unfrozen water is about 6% and 12%, respectively, even though the IIF temperatures varied from -14 to -41 degrees C. However, because of the way the solutions were prepared, the concentrations of salt and glycerol or EG in that unfrozen fraction at IIF were also rather tightly grouped. The experiments reported in the present paper were designed to separate the eff

Temperature and the formation of radiation-induced chromosome aberrations. I. The effect of irradiation temperature.

Irradiation temperature, changed from 37 degrees C to 4 degrees C, acts as a dose-modifying factor with regard to the dose-yield relationship for dicentric chromosome aberrations in human lymphocytes irradiated with 150 kV X-rays. The temperature dependence of the aberration yield observed at constant dose is S-shaped, with a sharp rise near 15 degrees C from a lower plateau below 12 degrees C to a higher plateau beyond 17 degrees C. The aberration yield is determined by the irradiation temperature, irrespective of fast temperature changes from 4 degrees C to 37 degrees C or from 37 degrees C

Core body temperature control by total liquid ventilation using a virtual lung temperature sensor.

In total liquid ventilation (TLV), the lungs are filled with a breathable liquid perfluorocarbon (PFC) while a liquid ventilator ensures proper gas exchange by renewal of a tidal volume of oxygenated and temperature-controlled PFC. Given the rapid changes in core body temperature generated by TLV using the lung has a heat exchanger, it is crucial to have accurate and reliable core body temperature monitoring and control. This study presents the design of a virtual lung temperature sensor to control core temperature. In the first step, the virtual sensor, using expired PFC to estimate lung temp

Nasopharyngeal Airspace Temperature During Rhinothermy.

Background: Respiratory viruses such as influenza and human rhinoviruses are temperature sensitive. Rhinothermy delivers heated, humidified air to the upper airways via the nares, and by possibly inhibiting viral replication, it is proposed as a potential therapy to attenuate the severity and duration of common cold or influenza symptoms. The effect of rhinothermy on nasopharyngeal air space temperature is uncertain. The objective of this study was to investigate the effect of rhinothermy delivering 100% humidified air at 41°C on nasopharyngeal air space temperature. The hypothesis was that th

High-temperature ultrafast ChipHPLC-MS.

Herein, we present a miniaturized chip-based HPLC approach coupled to electrospray ionization mass spectrometry utilizing temperature to achieve high-speed separations. The approach benefits from the low thermal mass of the microfluidic chip and can form an electrospray from the pre-heated mobile phase. With the help of this technology, isothermal and temperature-programmable operations up to 130°C were pursued to perform reversed-phase separations of pesticides in methanol and ethanol-containing eluents in less than 20 s.

Temperature control after cardiac arrest.

Managing temperature is an important part of post-cardiac arrest care. Fever or hyperthermia during the first few days after cardiac arrest is associated with worse outcomes in many studies. Clinical data have not determined any target temperature or duration of temperature management that clearly improves patient outcomes. Current guidelines and recent reviews recommend controlling temperature to prevent hyperthermia. Higher temperatures can lead to secondary brain injury by increasing seizures, brain edema and metabolic demand. Some data suggest that targeting temperature below normal could
