BACKGROUND: Management of long head of the biceps tendon (LHBT) pathology is accomplished through a biceps tenotomy or tenodesis. While both modalities provide beneficial outcomes, a biceps tenodesis may confer improved cosmesis, functional outcomes, and decreased muscle cramping postoperatively. Many procedural considerations are undertaken prior to a tenodesis, such as the surgical approach and fixation device. While similar clinical outcomes are achieved between an open subpectoral and arthroscopic suprapectoral biceps tenodesis (ASPBT) with interference screw (IS) fixation, the latter tech

BACKGROUND: Tenodesis is an effective surgical technique for the management of a pathologic long head of the biceps tendon. Tenodesis is performed with either an onlay (tendon opposed to cortical surface) or inlay (tendon docked into a reamed intra-cortical tunnel). Both techniques can be performed either from a subpectoral location, which is typically done through an open approach, or from a suprapectoral location, which is performed arthroscopically. The arthroscopic suprapectoral approach, when compared with its subpectoral counterpart, has been shown to report similar patient outcomes and

PURPOSE: To determine whether an association exists between the presence of cervical spine pathology and postoperative patient-reported outcomes (PROs) in patients undergoing open subpectoral biceps tenodesis (BT).
METHODS: A retrospective review of patients undergoing isolated BT from August 2011 to May 2019 was conducted. Cases were defined as patients with concomitant cervical spine disease (disc disease, disc herniations, neuroforaminal/central stenosis). Controls were patients without cervical spine disease. Postoperative PROs were collected from all patients with a minimum of 12-month f

Tenodesis is used to treat pathology of the long head of the biceps tendon. The authors evaluated the biomechanical properties of 6 techniques for biceps tenodesis fixation. The authors dissected 42 fresh-frozen cadaveric shoulders (mean age, 71±9.8 years; 69% male specimens), leaving the proximal humerus, proximal biceps tendon, and pectoralis major insertion. Specimens were randomized to undergo biceps tenodesis with one of the following: (1) an interference screw; (2) a cortical button; (3) a double-loaded 2.9-mm polyetheretherketone anchor (DL-2.9); (4) a double-loaded 1.9-mm all-suture an

Swan neck deformity, or hyperextension of the proximal interphalangeal joint, may occur secondary to trauma, rheumatoid arthritis, cerebral palsy, or Ehlers-Danlos syndrome, and can be treated with tenodesis of one slip of the flexor digitorum sublimis tendon. This technique has several variations, differing primarily in the specific location and method that a single slip of the flexor digitorum sublimis tendon is secured, but they all serve to create a static volar restraint against hyperextension. Options include tunneling the tendon through the bone of the proximal phalanx, attaching the te

BACKGROUND: Distal Achilles tendon avulsions are in the form of either bony and nonbony avulsion of Achilles tendon from its calcaneal insertion.
METHODS: Four patients with distal Achilles tendon avulsions or ruptures which were treated with tendon to bone repair using suture anchors are presented here. Operated leg was immobilized in above-knee cast for 4 weeks while the patient walked non-weight-bearing. Then, cast was changed to below knee, and full weight-bearing was allowed. Patients underwent gait analysis minimum at first postoperative year.

BACKGROUND: Numerous surgical treatments have been described to address subluxation or dislocation of the patella, but many are not suitable for the skeletally immature patient, as they risk injury to the proximal tibial physis or tibial tubercle apophysis. The Galeazzi semitendinosus tenodesis is a soft-tissue reconstruction technique designed to stabilize the patella without altering the femoral or the bony structures about the knee. We sought to determine if this semitendinosus tenodesis is a safe and effective treatment for patellofemoral instability in skeletally immature patients.

Associated lesions of the biceps tendon are commonly found during arthroscopic repair of rotator cuff tears. These lesions are treated with tenodesis, classically performed through an open approach. However, it seems reasonable to seek a single approach to correct both lesions; therefore, we have proposed a new arthroscopic technique that allows an exclusive arthroscopic tenodesis by including the biceps tendon in the rotator cuff suture, a surgical technique with a single suture of the rotator cuff that includes the biceps tendon. We treated 97 shoulders in 96 patients arthroscopically for co

BACKGROUND: Scapholunate ligament tears typically involve both the dorsal and palmar bands. There is prior biomechanical evidence that the palmar band has lower yield strength than the dorsal band; however, isolated palmar tears are scarcely reported in the literature. The purpose of this case report is to describe a reconstructive technique that can successfully address this rare issue.
CASE DESCRIPTION: A 23-year-old man was referred for persistent wrist pain following a basketball injury with scapholunate diastasis. Workup demonstrated isolated volar band scapholunate interosseous ligament

Superior labrum anterior to posterior (SLAP) tears are highly prevalent in overhead athletes and heavy laborers. Biomechanical adaptations as well as anatomic factors make the area prone to injury with a diminished healing potential. Previously, SLAP tears were repaired frequently with often poor postoperative function secondary to increased stiffness. Recently, the trend has shifted toward addressing the bicep anchor with a bicep tenodesis. Return to sports is multifactorial and depends on type of activity; however, about 79.5% of athletes are able to return to sport after an isolated SLAP re

PURPOSE: The purpose of this study was to evaluate clinical outcomes and survivorship of isolated biceps tenodesis (BT) at a minimum of 2 years and to identify patient-specific factors associated with these outcomes in patients undergoing BT without concomitant rotator cuff repair (RCR). We hypothesized that patient-reported outcomes would be significantly improved on American Shoulder and Elbow Surgeons Survey (ASES) and Single Assessment Numeric Evaluation (SANE), with a high rate of survivorship (>90%) at 2-year follow-up.

PURPOSE: Tenodesis as a treatment for a symptomatic long head of biceps (LHB) tendon is becoming more prevalent and new techniques exist which are purported to make the procedure faster and more effective. The determination of appropriate surgical indications for the procedure will facilitate proper analysis and comparisons of the varied techniques. This review analyses the reported indications in the literature in an attempt to guide future research and treatment.
METHODS: The EMBASE and MEDLINE databases were searched to identify surgical studies that report indications for LHB tenodesis. A

BACKGROUND: The purpose of the study was to evaluate the efficacy and safety of the modified plantar plate tenodesis for correction of claw toe deformity.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Modified plantar plate tenodesis was performed in ten fresh frozen cadaveric feet with claw toe deformity of the second toe. The plantar plate of the second metatarsophalangeal joint was anchored to the extensor digitorum longus tendon by a figure-of-eight suture. The figure-of-eight construct and the relationship of the digital nerve and the suture were studied. A clinical study was conducted to study the operative t

Biceps tenodesis is typically performed through an open anterior incision. Even when an arthroscopic rotator cuff repair is performed, an open procedure is typically performed to address the biceps rupture or subluxation. Recently, there has been great interest in performing this procedure arthroscopically. Techniques have included using an interference screw or 2 suture anchors through an anterior cannula. If the biceps is partially ruptured or subluxated and the proximal end is still visible in the joint, a biceps tenodesis can be performed using standard arthroscopic techniques and suture a

Functional hallux limitus is a loss of metatarsophalangeal joint extension during the second half of the single-support phase, when the weightbearing foot is in maximal dorsiflexion. Functionally, it constitutes a sagittal plane blockade during gait. As a result, the mechanical support and stability mechanisms of the foot are disrupted, with important consequences during gait. Functional hallux limitus is a frequent, though relatively unknown condition that clinicians may overlook when examining patients with complaints that are not limited to their feet, for they can also present other sympto

Arthroscopic biceps tenodesis is an effective treatment for patients with long head of the biceps tendon pathology. This technical note details a high-in-the-groove arthroscopic technique utilizing loop-and-tack fixation through a single cannula. This technique utilizes a spinal needle to create the "tack" portion of the construct, minimizing the risk of iatrogenic injury associated with the use of a BirdBeak or other sharp penetrating instrument. In addition, the biceps anchor remains intact during much of the technique, which allows for easier preservation of long head of the biceps tendon t

Background: Since the Sauvé-Kapandji procedure was introduced in 1936, many modifications were created using dynamic stabilizer, such as the ECU (extensor carpi ulnaris), the FCU (flexor carpi ulnaris), pronator teres to solve proximal ulnar stump pain. We believe that this modification is also another option for distal ulnar stump instability. Methods: From January 1998 to February 2017, there were 13 patients received the Sauvé-Kapandji (S-K) procedure with tenodesis of the ECU to the carpus and interosseous membrane. The average age at operation was 52 years (range, 28 to 63 years). Four ha
