Tensile strength of granular aggregates: Stress chains across particle phase versus stress concentration by pores.

We use the bond-based peridynamics approach to analyze the strength and fracture of dense granular aggregates with variable amount of a solid binding matrix, distributed according to a simple protocol in the interstitial space between particles. We show the versatility of the peridynamics approach in application to crack propagation and its scaling behavior in a homogeneous medium (in the absence of particles and pores). Then we apply this method to simulate the deformation and failure of aggregates as a function of the amount of the binding matrix under tensile loading. We find that the tensi

Postsurgical administration of estradiol benzoate decreases tensile strength of healing skin wounds in ovariectomized rats.

BACKGROUND: The most effective method of increasing the level of estrogen in the wounds of post-menopausal women undergoing routine surgical procedures is by long-term preoperative administration. However, in the case of acute surgery or trauma, the most effective method of increasing the level of estrogen is administration immediately pre- or postsurgery. This study, therefore, was aimed at assessing the effect of postsurgical administration of estradiol benzoate on wound healing in ovariectomized (OVX) Sprague Dawley rats. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Three months prior to the wound healing exper

Ultimate tensile strength of PDL of molars in rats after 1-hydroxyethylidene-1,1-bisphosphonate injections.

OBJECTIVES AND METHODS: Administration during root formation of a bisphosphonate, 1-hydroxyethylidene-1,1-bisphosphonate (HEBP), at a dose corresponding to 10 mg P/kg body weight, has been found to interfere with the formation of acellular cementum in rats. The purpose of this study was to measure the force required to extract a tooth lacking normal acellular cementum, and to correlate this force and the ultimate periodontal strength with the morphology of the periodontal tissues at different time intervals after single or multiple injections of HEBP. RESULTS: A single injection of HEBP given

Type of pledget and suture technique relative to esophageal tensile strength in long-gap esophageal atresia.

PURPOSE: We aimed to investigate whether pledget presence, pledget composition, and full versus partial thickness suture technique affect the force esophageal tissue can withstand before tearing. METHODS: A right thoracotomy was performed on 10 deceased fetal sheep, 110-114 days gestation. The esophagus was divided at the level of the carina and 2 cm of tissue was removed to mimic long-gap esophageal atresia. The pouches were sutured with horizontal mattress non-absorbable braided polyester suture using one of three methods: polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) pledgets, bovine pericardial pledgets

Lipoprotein(a), Oxidized Phospholipids and Tensile Clot Strength Measured by Thromboelastography in Patients Undergoing Percutaneous Intervention.

BACKGROUND: Lp(a) (lipoprotein[a]) and tensile clot strength (TCS) are distinct and independent risk factors for incident cardiovascular disease and recurrent ischemic events. Lp(a) is a carrier of oxidized phospholipids (OxPL) that contribute to its atherothrombotic properties. The current objective is to study the relationship of Lp(a) and OxPL biomarkers with TCS in patients with high-risk vascular diseases. METHODS: In a subanalysis of the ongoing MBRACE trial (Multidisciplinary Approach to Reduce Cardiovascular Health Disparities in the Baltimore Racial Minority Communities), we studied

Topical vanadate improves tensile strength and alters collagen organisation of excisional wounds in a mouse model.

Wound dehiscence, oftentimes a result of the poor tensile strength of early healing wounds, is a significant threat to the post-operative patient, potentially causing life-threatening complications. Vanadate, a protein tyrosine phosphatase inhibitor, has been shown to alter the organisation of deposited collagen in healing wounds and significantly improve the tensile strength of incisional wounds in rats. In this study, we sought to explore the effects of locally administered vanadate on tensile strength and collagen organisation in both the early and remodelling phases of excisional wound hea

Tensile strength analysis of automatic periodic stimulation for continuous intraoperative neural monitoring in a piglet model.

Continuous intraoperative neural monitoring (C-IONM) during thyroid surgery is a useful tool for preventing recurrent laryngeal nerve (RLN) injury. The present study aims to analyze the tensile strength tolerance of C-IONM electrodes on the vagal nerve (VN). A C-IONM wire was enclosed in a hand-held tensile testing system. The probe displacement on the VN was continuously monitored by positioning a second probe far-up/proximally in a piglet model, and an automatic periodic stimulation (APS) accessory was used. The 3-mm and 2-mm APS accessory has a mean tensile strength of 20.6 ± 10 N (range, 1

Tensile Strength Analysis of Thin-Walled Polymer Glass Fiber Reinforced Samples Manufactured by 3D Printing Technology.

The paper describes the mechanical properties, determined on the basis of a tensile strength test of a composite material based on glass-fiber reinforced polyamide and obtained by Selective Laser Sintering-SLS. The material used is PA 3200 GF. Thin walled samples with non-standard nominal thicknesses of 1, 1.4 and 1.8 mm, manufactured in three printing directions X, Y and Z, were used. The description included the impact of printing direction on the geometry of the obtained samples and tensile strength as well as the dependency of tensile strength on the sample thickness. The results can be us

Effectiveness of coagulation factor XIII concentrate for reversing loss of tensile strength of rat intestinal anastomoses.

BACKGROUND: Blood coagulation factor XIII (F-XIII) promotes cross-linking of fibrin during blood coagulation. Impaired clot stabilization in patients with genetic deficiencies of F-XIII is associated with marked pathologies of wound healing. METHODS: 60 rats given carbon tetrachloride underwent ileal anastomosis after which they received albumin (Alb animals) or F-XIII concentrate (F-XIII animals) immediately after surgery and daily thereafter until day 2 or 4 and were euthanized on day 3 or 5, respectively, or until day 5 and were euthanized on day 7, 10, or 21. We measured the plasma F-XIII

Improvement of the tensile strength of carbon nanotube fibers to 12.5 GPa by fluidics-induced alignment and densification.

Achieving the superior tensile strength of individual carbon nanotubes (CNTs) in macroscopic fibers depends on how CNTs are assembled. This study reports a fluidics approach: spraying high-velocity ethanol to scour and shrink pre-made CNT fibers. Experimental measurements show that the continuous scouring and shrinking induce significant improvements of the CNT alignment and packing density, leading to large increases of the van der Waals forces between CNTs and thus the tensile strength of the fibers. Under optimal conditions, the new CNT fibers achieve a specific tensile strength of 7.5×106

An Evaluation of the Tensile Strength of Polyglactin Sutures After Immersion in Different Herbal Mouthwashes: An In Vitro Study.

Background The process of suturing is essential to the healing of surgical wounds. Sutures on surgical wounds from fabric approximate ligament tissues, control haemorrhage, and assist the primary healing process in oral surgical procedures. The oral environment may cause the suture to lose its tensile strength, which causes tissue to open and spread infection. Different mouthwashes are recommended for effective oral hygiene maintenance postoperatively. Ideally, the use of mouthwashes should not alter the mechanical properties of suture materials. A suture material's tensile strength or ability

Application of percolation model to the tensile strength and the reduced modulus of elasticity of three compacted pharmaceutical excipients.

Percolation theory has been applied to several mechanical properties of pharmaceutical tablets. This power law describes the change of tablet's properties with the relative density. It defines critical tablet densities from which the mechanical properties start to change. The exponent in the law is expected to be universal for a mechanical property and numerical values are proposed in the literature. In this work, the percolation model was applied to the tensile strength and the reduced modulus of elasticity (obtained from surface indentation test) of three compacted pharmaceutical excipients

[Animal experiment study of tensile strength of hydroxylapatite-coated AO/ASIF Schanz screws for external fixators].

The removal torque and the loosening and infection rates of AO/ASIF 4.5 mm Schanz screws (MS) have been compared with those of hydroxyapatite-coated (HA) and hydroxyapatite/silver phosphate-coated (HA/P) AO/ASIF Schanz screws in vivo. In sheep, the left tibia was fixed after a midshaft osteotomy by means of unilateral fixator with 6 Schanz screws in an antero-lateral position. The osteotomy gap was filled with bone wax to avoid bony overgrowth. After operation, the animals were allowed to walk around immediately. The loosening rate was 2.8% at the site of the two HA-coated screws and 36% at th
