Germ cell tumors are the most common nonhematologic malignancy of young men which often present with metastasis to the retroperitoneum, however a primary retroperitoneal mass should also be considered. The case presented herein reports a 42-year-old male presenting with a massive heterogenous retroperitoneal mass determined to be a mature cystic teratoma. Further investigation revealed a multifocal right testicular mass containing both a viable pure seminoma and a fibrous scar demonstrating germ cell neoplasia in situ thus representing the rare phenomenon of a "burned-out" mixed germ cell test

BACKGROUND: Growing teratoma syndrome is a rare condition defined by the presence of enlarging metastatic lesions on serial imaging that arise after or during systemic chemotherapy for nonseminomatous germ cell tumors. Lesions commonly occur in the retroperitoneum, mediastinum, or lung and are notoriously unresponsive to conventional chemoradiotherapy.
METHODS: In this study, we present a dynamic case of a 26-year-old male, who had undergone surgical resection and systemic bleomycin treatment for a metastatic nonseminomatous germ cell tumor, and later developed recurrent masses in his posteri

BACKGROUND: Growing teratoma syndrome (GTS) is a rare condition characterized by the enlargement of metastatic masses during or after chemotherapy for malignant germ cell tumors (GCTs), despite normalized tumor marker levels. It is defined by three criteria: (1) enlarging or new masses during or after chemotherapy, (2) normal tumor marker levels, and (3) histological presence of only mature teratoma elements. Differentiating GTS from recurrent immature teratoma is challenging, as both conditions may present similarly in imaging and tumor marker profiles.
CASE PRESENTATION: We report the case

A newborn girl presenting with respiratory distress soon after birth was found to have a neck mass and required transfer to a paediatric intensive care unit with neonatal expertise. She subsequently underwent endoscopic airway assessment with microlaryngoscopy and bronchoscopy proceeding to open excision of the lesion in the right thyroid lobe on day thirteen of life, resulting in resolution of airway compromise and complete pathological clearance. The baby was discharged 10 days after surgery. Histology confirmed a thyroid teratoma. At 12 months, the child was thriving with no evidence of rec

A 55-year-old man presented with a 7-month history of an intermittent dry cough after returning from Turkey. A chest radiograph revealed a large mass-like opacity in the right lung field and CT demonstrated a 13 cm round, cystic lesion in the anterior mediastinum. The patient was referred to the cardiothoracic surgical team for rigid bronchoscopy, thoracotomy and resection. Surgery was uncomplicated with a rapid uneventful recovery. Histology concluded a diagnosis of a mature teratoma of the thymus.

Germ cell tumors (GCTs) may occur in both children and adults and include a broad array of histologic subtypes, such as teratoma, seminoma (known as dysgerminoma in the ovary and germinoma in the pineal gland), choriocarcinoma, yolk sac tumor, embryonal cell carcinoma, and mixed GCT. In adults, GCTs occur most commonly in the gonads. In children, sacrococcygeal tumors predominate. Teratomas are a common form of GCT. They are defined histologically as containing tissues derived from all 3 germ cell layers: ectoderm, mesoderm (most teratomas contain fat, an imaging hallmark, which is a mesoderma

OBJECTIVE: This paper aims to highlight the clinical features, investigations and treatment of retroperitoneal teratomas condition.
METHODS: 12 patients (8 females and 4 males, age range-2 months to 14 yrs) of retroperitoneal teratoma admitted to the department of Pediatric Surgery, King George Medical University, Lucknow between 1980 and 2004 were studied. Investigations included hematology, plain X-ray of the abdomen, intravenous urography, ultrasound, computerised tomography (CT) of the abdomen (after 1990, 8 patients) and serum alpha-fetoprotein assay (after 1991, 6 patients, preoperative

Thyroid teratomas are rare neoplasms in adults (only 19 cases have been reported in the world literature). We report the case of a 55-year-old woman with a paratracheal mass, paralysis of the recurrent nerve, dyspnea, and results of palpation suggestive of malignancy. Total thyroidectomy was performed and anatomopathological study disclosed a benign thyroid teratoma in adult. We discuss this case and review the literature on adult thyroid teratomas.

Testicular teratomas in prepubertal children are distinct from adult testicular teratomas as well as from teratomas located elsewhere in the body, both with respect to their pathologic features and biologic behavior. Over a period of 12 years, testicular teratomas comprised 25% (5 of 20) of all testicular tumors in prepubertal children, treated at our institution. Their clinical presentation and pathologic profile was analysed. Their mean age at presentation was 6.7 m (range 1 m to 18 m) with the mass having been noted at birth in 3 infants. The right testis was involved in all except one pati

A rare case of a mature teratoma of the placenta is reported. The tumor lay between the amnion and the chorion and contained skin and its appendages, bone, cartilage, fat and ganglia, without organization. There was no evidence of a recognizable umbilical cord. We concluded that the tumor was a mature teratoma of the placenta. The distinction between a teratoma and a fetus acardius amorphus, and the possible origin of the tumor in this site, are discussed with a brief review of the literature.

Teratomas of the head and neck are uncommon. They are composed of tissues from all three germ layers with varying degrees of differentiation. They arise from pluripotent stem cells and ectopic embryonic nongerm cells. Head and neck teratomas most commonly emerge during the neonatal period and are associated with airway obstruction and high rates of mortality in untreated patients. The tumors are usually benign, but when found during adulthood, they have a high incidence of malignancy. The most common site of occurrence is the cervical region and the nasopharynx. We presented a rare case of ter

The purpose of this study was to establish the optimal management of immature teratoma of the ovary. Pursuant to this, 20 previously untreated patients with immature teratoma were evaluated. Nine patients were at stage I of the disease, 2 had progressed to stage II, and 9 to stage III. Eight patients had grade 1 tumors, 11 had grade 2 tumors, and 1 had a grade 3 tumor. Postoperative chemotherapy was performed in 19 cases. Vincristine, actinomycin D, and cyclophosphamide (VAC) were administered in 9 cases, chemotherapy including cisplatin (P) was administered in 8 cases, and other regimens were

The paper reports a case of teratoma of the urachus in a 53-year-old patient. The difficulties of diagnosing this pathology are underlined, in particular in relation to the rarity of the site of which no other examples have been reported in the literature.

Teratomas of the orbit, rare congenital tumors consisting of normal tissues derived from all three germ cell layers, are probably choristomas rather than true neoplasms, and must be considered in the differential diagnosis of neonatal orbital masses. They typically grow rapidly after birth, causing destructive proptosis and exposure keratopathy; however, they may take a slowly progressive course, expanding slightly over several years. We studied two cases of histopathologically proven orbital teratomas. In one patient, a 2-month-old girl, the tumor was solid and enlarged rapidly after birth. I

Probabilities are given for three modes of origins of teratomas and for five possible modes of origins of twins. Besides testing for monoluteal dispermic twins, these probabilities enable centromere mapping. Trisomy and triploidy arising through nondisjunction give the same information.

Thoracic teratomas are rare in children. They present a heterogeneous and problematic group of tumours. Extramediastinal lesions are unusual. Tomography is of particular value in cases of mediastinal teratomata, as this allows differentiation between the tumour and the heart. Of 31 cases of intrapulmonary teratoma that have been described, only 3 were in children. The authors report a unique case of combined mediastinal and intrapulmonary teratoma.
