Results of a double-blind, randomized, placebo-controlled, parallel study in 37 patients indicate that terfenadine, 60 mg bid, is significantly more effective than placebo and as effective as hydroxyzine, 25 mg qid, in the treatment of chronic idiopathic urticaria without causing the somnolence that was associated with the use of hydroxyzine.

A multicentre, group comparative open study was carried out on 68 patients to compare the effects of 2% sodium cromoglycate eyedrops and an oral antihistamine, terfenadine, on acute symptoms of seasonal allergic conjunctivitis. Terfenadine (5 mg/kg body weight, q12h) and placebo (0.5 grain/dog q12h) were both administered orally as individual agents to 18 dogs with atopy in a double-blinded study. No dog improved. Hyperactivity, polyphagia, lethargy, anorexia, increased pruritus, or ocular discharge were seen in three dogs treated with terfenadine. Forty patients with chronic urticaria were treated with terfenadine or astemizole in a randomized double-blind study. The intensity of the symptoms was quantified and documented daily by the patients. Both antihistamines had a clear effect on the intensity of the pruritus and the severity of the wheals.
