Test accuracy of the Overall Anxiety Severity and Impairment Scale (OASIS) for screening anxiety in adults - systematic review and multiple thresholds meta-analysis.

BACKGROUND: Given the high prevalence of anxiety disorders and their frequent under-recognition, the use of questionnaires for screening anxiety is under debate. OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the test accuracy across cut-offs of the Overall Anxiety Severity and Impairment Scale (OASIS) against (semi-)structured interviews for screening any anxiety disorder (AAD) and generalised anxiety disorder (GAD) in adults. METHODS: We searched Embase, MEDLINE, PubMed-not-MEDLINE subset and PsycINFO up to 15 July 2025. We assessed the internal and external validity using the QUADAS-2-tool. We used the multiple

Anxiety process "theta" biomarker in the stop signal task eliminated by a preceding relaxation test.

Anxiety disorders are currently the most prevalent psychiatric diseases in Europe and the United States, the 6th highest cause of years of life lived with disability, and so a grave and ever-increasing burden on health care resources. Categorization of specific anxiety disorders is constantly evolving, but even the new Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (5th ed.; DSM-5) manual uses symptom lists, not objective biomarkers. The DSM-5 and International Classification of Diseases (10th ed.) also aim for single diagnoses, but patients present with mixed symptoms that fit multiple

Histaminergic H1 receptors mediate L-histidine-induced anxiety in elevated plus-maze test in mice.

The central histaminergic system is reported to mediate behavioural, hormonal and physiological homeostasis of living organisms. Recent reports indicate its prominent role in various neurobehavioural disorders such as depression and psychosis. This study evaluated the effect of activation of the central histaminergic system in anxiety-like conditions, using the elevated plus-maze test in mice, and elucidated the role of different histaminergic receptors mediating such effects. Peripheral administration of L-histidine (L-His), in a dose-dependent manner, significantly decreased the exploration

An initial test of a new self-guided internet-based intervention for social anxiety: iExposure.

Social anxiety is a prevalent mental health concern that impacts approximately 12% of the US population. There is a need for targeted mechanism-focused interventions for social anxiety that are also highly scalable. Using a recently developed naturalistic paradigm with simulated teleconferencing interactions as the central treatment element, we developed a new self-guided internet-based intervention for social anxiety called iExposure. This randomized clinical trial aimed at testing two mechanism-driven exposure augmentation strategies for social anxiety. Participants (N = 53) were randomized

Test-retest reliability of regional electroencephalogram (EEG) and cardiovascular measures in social anxiety disorder (SAD).

Although the search for psychophysiological manifestations of social anxiety has a rich history, there appear to be no published reports examining the reliability of continuous electrocortical measures that putatively index stress vulnerability and stress reactivity in socially anxious individuals. We examined the 1-week test-retest reliability of regional electroencephalogram (EEG) alpha asymmetry and power, respiratory sinus arrhythmia (RSA), heart period, and heart period variability measures at rest and during anticipation of an impromptu speech in 26 adults diagnosed with social anxiety d

The causal role of negative imagery in social anxiety: a test in confident public speakers.

This study tests the causal role of negative self-imagery in social anxiety. Low public-speaking anxious volunteers rehearsed a negative self-image, a positive self-image or a control image prior to giving a speech. As predicted, the negative image group felt more anxious, believed they performed less well and reported more negative thoughts than the positive image group. These findings do not appear to be due to changes in state anxiety, since they remained unchanged when anxiety was controlled in an analysis of covariance. The negative image group also reported more anxiety than the control

Altered local gyrification index and corresponding resting-state functional connectivity in individuals with high test anxiety.

Previous studies have reported that test anxiety is closely related to unreasonable cognitive patterns and maladaptive emotional responses. However, its underlying brain structural and functional basis has not been thoroughly studied. This study aimed to evaluate the potential difference in local gyration index (LGI) and corresponding resting-state functional connectivity (RSFC) in individuals with high test anxiety (HTA) compared with low test anxiety (LTA). Twenty-six individuals with HTA and 28 individuals with LTA underwent T1-weighted structural and resting-state functional magnetic reson

Measures of anxiety in zebrafish (Danio rerio): dissociation of black/white preference and novel tank test.

The effects of wall color stimuli on diving, and the effects of depth stimuli on scototaxis, were assessed in zebrafish. Three groups of fish were confined to a black, a white, or a transparent tank, and tested for depth preference. Two groups of fish were confined to a deep or a shallow tank, and tested for black-white preference. As predicted, fish preferred the deep half of a split-tank over the shallow half, and preferred the black half of a black/white tank over the white half. Results indicated that the tank wall color significantly affected depth preference, with the transparent tank pr

Genetic deletion and pharmacological blockade of CB1 receptors modulates anxiety in the shock-probe burying test.

Cannabinoids affect various behavioral processes, including emotion, learning and memory, which may be specifically regulated through the CB1 receptors. The exact role CB1 receptors play in anxiety remains unclear. Both genetic and pharmacological blockade of CB1 receptors have produced inconsistent effects on anxiety. However, these studies examined passive avoidance as an index of anxiety. In the present study, both active and passive avoidance were examined using the shock-probe burying test while CB1 receptors were blocked genetically or pharmacologically. In the shock-probe burying test,

The capacity of cognitive tests to detect generalized anxiety disorder (GAD): A pilot study.

Cognitive impairment remains understudied in generalized anxiety disorder (GAD), despite the high prevalence and substantial burden associated with this disorder. We aimed to assess cognitive impairment in patients with GAD and evaluate the ability of cognitive tests to detect this disorder. Because of its high rate of comorbidity, we also examined how other anxiety disorders and current major depressive episodes affected our results. We tested 263 consecutive general practice outpatients. We used the GAD-7 and the Mini International Neuropsychiatric Interview (MINI) to detect anxiety and mood

Testing anxiety and reward processing in anorexia nervosa as predictors of longitudinal clinical outcomes.

Anorexia nervosa (AN) is a psychiatric disorder with a tenuous longitudinal course marked by a high risk of relapse. Previous studies suggest that aberrant threat perception and reward processing operate in many with AN, and may produce obstacles to treatment engagement; therefore, these could potentially represent predictors for longitudinal clinical outcomes. In this study, anxiety and reward symptoms, behaviors, and neural circuit connectivity were measured in intensively treated AN-restrictive subtype patients (n = 33) and healthy controls (n = 31). Participants underwent an fMRI experimen

Sex differences in specific aspects of two animal tests of anxiety-like behavior.

RATIONALE: Anxiety, a negative state of high arousal and vigilance, is especially prevalent in women, making identification of underlying mechanisms critical for developing effective therapies. With the challenge of disentangling biological and social factors in humans, animal tests can provide valuable insights, although such tests, developed in males, have unclear validity for females. OBJECTIVE: To better understand patterns of sex differences across multiple measures within two classical rodent anxiety tests. METHODS: We examined female and male adult Wistar rats (n = 15-18/group) that w

Testing the Functional Profiles of School Refusal Behavior and Clarifying Their Relationship With School Anxiety.

Students with school attendance problems are a diverse and heterogeneous group whose patterns of symptomatology can change over time. This study aims to identify different school refusal behavior profiles and to determine whether these profiles differ from each other based on four situational factors and three response systems of school anxiety across gender. The participants were 1,685 Spanish students (49% female) aged 15-18 years (M = 16.28; SD =0.97). The School Refusal Assessment Scale-Revised (SRAS-R) and the School Anxiety Inventory (SAI) were administered. Latent profile analysis revea
