Herbivore-induced plant volatiles emitted by citrus in response to spider mite infestation can attract predatory mites.

Understanding the nutritional interplay among plants, pests, and natural enemies is essential for sustainable pest management. Enhancing the efficiency of natural enemies, such as Neoseiulus californicus (McGregor) (Acari: Phytoseiidae) is critical, and exploiting herbivore-induced plant volatiles (HIPVs) offers a promising approach. However, N. californicus has rarely been reported to utilize HIPVs to improve their biological control capabilities. Our research revealed a significant difference in the diversity of volatile compounds detected in clean Citrus reticulata Blanco leaves compared to

Antipredation escape behaviour differs between fighter and sneaker males in the two-spotted spider mite.

Predation risk can strongly influence the evolution of reproductive tactics because behaviours that enhance mating success often increase vulnerability to predators. Males of the two-spotted spider mite, Tetranychus urticae, exhibit distinct reproductive tactics, including fighting and sneaking, as a conditional strategy. We investigated whether escape behaviour in response to predation risk differs between fighter and sneaker males during precopulatory mate guarding. To examine responses to different predator-associated cues, we introduced different developmental stages (adult female, deutony

Automated detection and quantification of two-spotted spider mite life stages using computer vision for high-throughput in vitro assays.

The two-spotted spider mite (Tetranychus urticae Koch) is a globally significant agricultural pest with high reproductive capacity, rapid development, and frequent evolution of miticide resistance. Breeding and selection of resistant host cultivars represent a promising complement to chemical control, but widespread adoption is limited primarily due to the labor-intensive nature of conventional in vitro phenotyping methods. Here, we present a high-throughput, semi-automated image analysis pipeline integrating the Blackbird CNC Microscopy Imaging Robot with computer vision models for mite life

Influence of mowing on dynamics of native phytoseiid mites and Tetranychus urticae in apple orchards in northern Japan.

To support practical integrated pest management in commercial apple orchards, I investigated the influence of mowing on the occurrence of Tetranychus urticae and native phytoseiid mites in apple orchards sprayed with selective insecticides in Akita Prefecture, northern Japan, from 2013 to 2015. The orchards were not mown in 2013, and unmown and mown plots were compared in 2014 and 2015. There were significantly fewer Typhlodromus vulgaris on apple leaves and Amblyseius tsugawai in the undergrowth in mown plots than in unmown plots in both years. Conversely, there were significantly more T. urt

Complex odor from plants under attack: herbivore's enemies react to the whole, not its parts.

BACKGROUND: Insect herbivory induces plant odors that attract herbivores' natural enemies. Assuming this attraction emerges from individual compounds, genetic control over odor emission of crops may provide a rationale for manipulating the distribution of predators used for pest control. However, studies on odor perception in vertebrates and invertebrates suggest that olfactory information processing of mixtures results in odor percepts that are a synthetic whole and not a set of components that could function as recognizable individual attractants. Here, we ask if predators respond to herbivo

Response of predatory mites to a herbivore-induced plant volatile: genetic variation for context-dependent behaviour.

Plants infested with herbivores release specific volatile compounds that are known to recruit natural enemies. The response of natural enemies to these volatiles may be either learned or genetically determined. We asked whether there is genetic variation in the response of the predatory mite Phytoseiulus persimilis to methyl salicylate (MeSa). MeSa is a volatile compound consistently produced by plants being attacked by the two-spotted spider mite, the prey of P. persimilis. We predicted that predators express genetically determined responses during long-distance migration where previously lea

Herbivore-induced plant volatiles trigger sporulation in entomopathogenic fungi: the case of Neozygites tanajoae infecting the cassava green mite.

A large body of evidence shows that plants release volatile chemicals upon attack by herbivores. These volatiles influence the performance of natural enemies. Nearly all the evidence on the effect of plant volatiles on natural enemies of herbivores concerns predators, parasitoids, and entomophagous nematodes. However, other entomopathogens, such as fungi, have not been studied yet for the way they exploit the chemical information that the plant conveys on the presence of herbivores. We tested the hypothesis that volatiles emanating from cassava plants infested by green mites (Mononychellus tan

Interactions in an acarine predator guild: impact on Typhlodromalus aripo abundance and biological control of cassava green mite in Benin, West Africa.

To determine the impact of an acarine predator guild on the abundance of a shared herbivorous prey and its principal exotic predator, a series of surveys were conducted in ca. 200 cassava fields in swamp and non-swamp areas in southwestern Benin, West Africa. For each field, the surveys provided data on the density of a pest arthropod, the cassava green mite Mononychellus tanajoa (Bondar), of an introduced and successfully established natural enemy, the apex-inhabiting predatory mite Typhlodromalus aripo DeLeon, and on occurrence of other predator species that inhabit the leaves and share the

Detection of spider mite infestation via hyperspectral imaging and deep neural networks with spatial-spectral attention.

Early detection of spider mite emergence is highly challenging due to the lack of visible symptoms and subtle physiological changes. To address the rapid monitoring of pest mite damage, this study provided a method based on hyperspectral imaging combined with a joint spatial-spectral attention (SSA) mechanism in a deep convolutional neural network (DCNN) for automated detection of pest mite infections. Leaves infested with varying degrees of spider mites Tetranychus urticae Koch (Acari: Tetranychidae) were captured daily to obtain multi-band spectral information of hyperspectral images. After

Wolbachia affects oviposition and mating behaviour of its spider mite host.

Wolbachia bacteria are transmitted from mother to offspring via the cytoplasm of the egg. When mated to males infected with Wolbachia bacteria, uninfected females produce unviable offspring, a phenomenon called cytoplasmic incompatibility (CI). Current theory predicts that 'sterilization' of uninfected females by infected males confers a fitness advantage to Wolbachia in infected females. When the infection is above a threshold frequency in a panmictic population, CI reduces the fitness of uninfected females below that of infected females and, consequently, the proportion of infected hosts inc

Contrasting Effects of Methyl Jasmonate and Methyl Salicylate on Coffee Plant Defenses against the Southern Red Spider Mite.

Herbivory by mites often activates both jasmonate and salicylate signaling pathways in plants. While the role of jasmonic acid (JA) pathway in inducing plant defenses against mites is well established, the contribution of salicylic acid (SA) remains under debate. In previous studies, we found that herbivory by the mite Oligonychus ilicis (McGregor) (Acari: Tetranychidae) triggered the accumulation of both SA and JA, but increased plants susceptibility to subsequent herbivores. Here, we investigated the relative importance of SA and JA signaling pathways in coffee resistance to O. ilicis by app

Discovery of Novel 2,4,5-Trisubstituted Oxazoline Derivatives as Potent Acaricidal Agents.

To overcome the high toxicity of etoxazole to aquatic invertebrates and its limited structural diversity while preserving its potent acaricidal activity, we successfully designed and synthesized 27 novel 2,4,5-trisubstituted oxazoline derivatives and systematically assessed their acaricidal activity. Among these, compounds 12q (LC50 = 0.84 mg/L) and 12u (LC50 = 0.74 mg/L) exhibited moderate ovicidal activity. Notably, compound 12aa exhibited good ovicidal (LC50 = 0.14 mg/L) and larvicidal activities (LC50 = 0.09 mg/L), highlighting its potential as a lead compound. Potential surface calculatio

Comparative and evolutionary analysis of Arabidopsis RIN4-like/NOI proteins induced by herbivory.

The spider mite Tetranychus urticae is an economically important agricultural pest, which feeds on a broad spectrum of plant species. In an RNAseq experiment performed in our laboratory, 4 of the 15 members of the RIN4-like/NOI family of Arabidopsis thaliana were significantly overexpressed after T. urticae infestation. Two of them (NOI3 and NOI5) are shorter and harbour one NOI domain, which characterises this family, and the other two (NOI10 and NOI11) have two-NOI domains. The only member of this family characterized is RIN4, a two-NOI intrinsically disordered protein anchored to the plasma

Gene silencing by RNA interference in Sarcoptes scabiei: a molecular tool to identify novel therapeutic targets.

BACKGROUND: Scabies is one of the most common and widespread parasitic skin infections globally, affecting a large range of mammals including humans, yet the molecular biology of Sarcoptes scabiei is astonishingly understudied. Research has been hampered primarily due to the difficulty of sampling or culturing these obligatory parasitic mites. A further and major impediment to identify and functionally analyse potential therapeutic targets from the recently emerging molecular databases is the lack of appropriate molecular tools. METHODS: We performed standard BLAST based searches of the exist

Structural Optimization of Natural Plant Products: Construction, Pesticidal Activities, and Toxicology Study of New 2-Isopropanol-4-methoxy-7-alkyl/aryloxycarbonyl-(E)-vinyl-2,3-dihydrobenzofurans.

Recently, the structural optimization of natural bioactive products has been one of the important ways to discover new pesticide candidates. Based on osthole as a lead compound, herein, a series of new 2-isopropanol-4-methoxy-7-alkyl/aryloxycarbonyl-(E)-vinyl-2,3-dihydrobenzofuran derivatives were synthesized. Steric configurations of compounds 3, 4, 6, 9, 11, 29, and 31 were confirmed by X-ray monocrystallography. Notably, an efficient method for preparation of 2-isopropanol-2,3-dihydrobenzofurans from osthole by the epoxidation and rearrangement reactions was developed. Against Plutella xylo

Design, synthesis, and biological activity of novel halogenated sulfite compounds.

The acaricide propargite has been widely used for over 50 years without significant resistance issues. Addressing to the propargite defects of poor crop safety, thirty-six novel halogenated propargite analogues were designed, synthesized, and characterized using 1H NMR, 13C NMR spectroscopy, and HRMS. All target compounds were screened for activity against adult Tetranychus cinnabarinus (spider mites) and Myzus persicae (aphids). Two compounds exhibiting higher insecticidal activity were further evaluated for crop safety on cowpea seedlings. Structural modifications, such as replacing the tert

Zoophytophagous mites can trigger plant-genotype specific defensive responses affecting potential prey beyond predation: the case of Euseius stipulatus and Tetranychus urticae in citrus.

BACKGROUND: Zoophytophagous predators can trigger plant defenses affecting prey populations beyond predation. Euseius stipulatus is a presumed zoophytophagous phytoseiid common in citrus. The response of citrus to one of its potential prey, Tetranychus urticae, is genotype dependent, with Citrus reshni and C. aurantium exhibiting extreme susceptibility and resistance, respectively. Volatile blends produced upon infestation affected the behavior of these two mites. We wondered whether E. stipulatus could trigger similar responses. RESULTS: Euseius stipulatus triggered genotype-dependent defens

An LED-based UV-B irradiation system for tiny organisms: System description and demonstration experiment to determine the hatchability of eggs from four Tetranychus spider mite species from Okinawa.

We developed a computer-based system for controlling the photoperiod and irradiance of UV-B and white light from a 5×5 light-emitting diode (LED) matrix (100×100mm). In this system, the LED matrix was installed in each of four irradiation boxes and controlled by pulse-width modulators so that each box can independently emit UV-B and white light at irradiances of up to 1.5 and 4.0Wm(-2), respectively, or a combination of both light types. We used this system to examine the hatchabilities of the eggs of four Tetranychus spider mite species (T. urticae, T. kanzawai, T. piercei and T. okinawanus)
