Isoprenoic compounds play a major part in the global carbon cycle. Biosynthesis and mineralization by aerobic bacteria have been intensively studied. This review describes our knowledge on the anaerobic metabolism of isoprenoids, mainly by denitrifying and fermentative bacteria. Nitrate-reducing beta-Proteobacteria were isolated on monoterpenes as sole carbon source and electron donor. Thauera spp. were obtained on the oxygen-containing monoterpenes linalool, menthol, and eucalyptol. Several strains of Alcaligenes defragrans were isolated on unsaturated monoterpenes as growth substrates. A nov

BACKGROUND: Microbial communities in aquatic ecosystems are integral to water quality and public health, yet their structure and underlying ecological processes in regions like Egypt remain underexplored. To address this gap, this research explores the structure and dynamics of prokaryotic communities in tap water and groundwater in Cairo, Egypt.
METHODS: Using environmental DNA metabarcoding, bioinformatics, and statistical modeling, we investigated microbial composition, pathogen identification, environmental factors, and ecological assembly processes.
RESULTS: The sequence analysis reveal

Bioretention facilities (BRF) are widely utilized in sponge cities for stormwater management, but they face challenges in effectively controlling nitrogen due to the instability of traditional fillers. Pyrite has been extensively employed as an electron donor to enhance nitrogen removal; however, it generates by-products such as H+, SO42-, and Fe2+/Fe3+ that can pose environmental issues. Construction waste residues (CWR), consisting of waste brick and concrete, have been explored as alternative fillers, but they suffer from alkaline leaching problems. To mitigate this limitation, this study i

It is essential to remediate the polluted urban river, which endangers the aquatic creatures and affected human body's senses. The treatment wetland combined with microbial electrochemical system (MES) used for the remediation is becoming a new research focus due to its ideal pollutants removal efficiency and small footprint. Here this paper provided a kind of novel shallow wetland bed coupling with close-circuit microbial electrochemical system (WB-CMES) to remove pollutants in surface water. In contrast to the shallow wetland bed coupling with open-circuit MES (WB-OMES) and the shallow wetla

The limited availability of biodegradable organic carbon in low C/N wastewater results in unsatisfactory denitrification efficiency and low operational stability. To address this, a novel three-dimensional biofilm electrode reactor (3D-BER) was constructed using Fe3O4 and MnO2 modified corncob as a slow-release carbon-based particle electrode for coupled denitrification and NH4+-N removal. A key feature of this design was that the modified corncob functioned simultaneouslyacted not only as a slow-release carbon source, a biofilm carrier, and a redox-active particle electrode, enabling coupled

Ferrous dosing is used to reduce phosphorus concentration and alleviate polymeric membrane fouling in membrane bioreactor (MBR). However, limited studies have been conducted to investigate the impacts of ferrous dosing on ceramic membrane fouling, nutrient removal efficiency and microbial community. Accordingly, the aim of this study was to investigate the effect of intermittent ferrous dosing with Fe/P molar ratios of 2 and 1 (with a dosing frequency of every two days) on the overall nutrient removal, functional microbial changes and membrane fouling in ceramic membrane bioreactors (CMBR) in

BACKGROUND: The global prevalence of vitamin D (VitD) deficiency associated with numerous acute and chronic diseases has led to strategies to improve the VitD status through dietary intake of VitD-fortified foods and VitD supplementation. In this context, the circulating form of VitD3 (cholecalciferol) in the human body, 25-hydroxy-VitD3 (calcifediol, 25OHVitD3), has a much higher efficacy in improving the VitD status, which has motivated researchers to develop methods for its effective and sustainable synthesis. Conventional monooxygenase-/peroxygenase-based biocatalytic platforms for the con

Achieving stable and efficient nitrite accumulation in integrated partial denitrification/anammox (PD/A) processes is typically constrained by substrate competition among microorganisms, posing a significant challenge for large-scale engineering applications. This study proposes a novel strategy for regulating nitrogen transformation pathways using chlorite (ClO2-) as a bioregulator, by inducing denitrification to remain at the nitrite stage and thereby providing a stable substrate supply for the anammox process. In the continuous-flow PD/A biofilter, the increase of ClO2- concentration from 0

BACKGROUND: Myocardial infarction (MI) represents a severe cardiovascular disease with limited therapeutic agents. This study was aimed to elucidate the role of the exosomes derived from human placental mesenchymal stem cells (PMSCs-Exos) in MI.
METHODS: PMSCs were isolated and cultured in vitro, with identification by both transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and nanoparticle tracking analysis (NTA). To further investigate the effects of PMSC-Exos on MI, C57BL/6 mice were randomly divided into Sham group, MI group, and PMSC-Exos group. After 4 weeks of the intervention, cardiac function wa

Effective and accurate primer design is an increasingly important skill as the use of PCR-based diagnostics in clinical and environmental settings is on the rise. While universal primer sets have been successfully designed for highly conserved core genes such as 16S rRNA and characteristic genes such as dsrAB and dnaJ, primer sets for mobile, accessory genes such as multidrug resistance efflux pumps (MDREP) have not been explored. Here, we describe an approach to create universal primer sets for select MDREP genes chosen from five superfamilies (SMR, MFS, MATE, ABC and RND) identified in a mod

The co-exposure of antibiotics has important effects on antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs) and microbial community aggregation in wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs). However, it is unclear whether differences in historical antibiotic exposure stress can determine responses of microbes and ARGs to combined antibiotics. By selecting a high concentration (30 mg·L-1) of sulfamethoxazole (SMX) and trimethoprim (TMP) as historical exposure stress conditions, the effects of SMX and TMP-combined pollution on ARGs, bacterial communities, and their interactions were explored in short-term experiments.

Under anoxic conditions most aromatic compounds are metabolized via benzoyl-CoA which becomes reduced by benzoyl-CoA reductase (dearomatizing); this enzyme was recently described in the bacterium Thauera aromatica [Boll, M. & Fuchs, G. (1995) Eur. J. Biochem. 234, 921-933]. It catalyzes the reaction benzoyl-CoA + 2 e- + 2 H+ + 2 MgATP + 2 H2O --> cyclohexa-1,5-diene-1-carboxyl-CoA + 2 MgADP + 2 Pi. The iron-sulfur protein has a native molecular mass of 160-170 kDa and consists of four different subunits. In addition a flavin may be present. The nature of the potential prosthetic group and the

The complex composition of coal chemical wastewater (CCW), marked by numerous highly toxic aromatic compounds, induces the destabilization of the biochemical treatment system, leading to suboptimal treatment efficacy. In this study, a biochemical treatment system was established to efficiently degrade aromatic compounds by quantitatively regulating the dosage of co-metabolized substrates (specifically, the chemical oxygen demand (COD) Glucose: COD Sodium acetate = 3:1, 1:3, and 1:1). The findings demonstrated that the system achieved optimal performance under the condition that the ratio of CO
