The manic phase of Bipolar disorder significantly impairs theory of mind decoding.

Bipolar disorder is associated with significant deficits in the decoding of others' mental states in comparison to healthy participants. However, differences in theory of mind decoding ability among patients in manic, depressed, and euthymic phases of bipolar disorder is currently unknown. Fifty-nine patients with bipolar I or II disorder (13 manic, 25 depressed, 20 euthymic) completed the "Reading the Mind in the Eyes" Task (Eyes task) and the Animals Task developed to control for non-mentalistic response demands of the Eyes Task. Patients also completed self-report and clinician-rated measur

Mindblind eyes: an absence of spontaneous theory of mind in Asperger syndrome.

Adults with Asperger syndrome can understand mental states such as desires and beliefs (mentalizing) when explicitly prompted to do so, despite having impairments in social communication. We directly tested the hypothesis that such individuals nevertheless fail to mentalize spontaneously. To this end, we used an eye-tracking task that has revealed the spontaneous ability to mentalize in typically developing infants. We showed that, like infants, neurotypical adults' (n = 17 participants) eye movements anticipated an actor's behavior on the basis of her false belief. This was not the case for i

[Specificity hypothesis of a theory of mind deficit in early childhood autism].

OBJECTIVES: In order to test the hypothesis that a theory of mind deficit is specific for autism, the present study presents the first replication of the Sally-Anne test (Baron-Cohen, Leslie & Frith, 1985) in the German-speaking countries. METHODS: The Sally-Anne test was administered to 16 autistic, 24 probands with Down's syndrome and 20 normal preschool prosands. The intelligence of the autistic group and that with Down's syndrome was measured by the CPM/SPM. In addition, the ADI-R was used with the principal caregivers of the autistic and Down's syndrome subjects. RESULTS: With regard to

Theory of mind and executive functions in sighted children of blind parents.

INTRODUCTION: Previous research indicates that during infancy, children of blind parents demonstrate greater communicative flexibility compared to peers raised by sighted parents. The present study aimed to examine whether such experience may influence executive functions and theory of mind at later stages of development. METHODS: Children raised by sighted parents as well as children whose parent(s) have a visual impairment participated in the study. They completed tasks related to belief attribution (custom computer task, Theory of Mind Task Battery) as well as a task measuring executive fu

Understanding Theory of Mind-pragmatics relationship through the spectrum of neurodegenerative diseases.

Our understanding of how pragmatic skills change in ageing is not systematic. Even less is known about the effects of pathological ageing-particularly in the context of neurodegenerative diseases-on pragmatic competence, changes in Theory of Mind and the potential inter-relationship between these domains. Given that pragmatic competence relies on a wide range of cognitive functions, examining pragmatic changes in speakers with neurodegenerative diseases may clarify whether these alterations are inherently pragmatic or arise from deficits in other cognitive domains, such as impairments in Theor

Systematic Review and Inventory of Theory of Mind Measures for Young Children.

Theory of mind (TOM), the ability to infer mental states to self and others, has been a pervasive research theme across many disciplines including developmental, educational, neuro-, and social psychology, social neuroscience and speech therapy. TOM abilities have been consistently linked to markers of social adaptation and have been shown to be affected in a broad range of clinical conditions. Despite the wealth and breadth of research dedicated to TOM, identifying appropriate assessment tools for young children remains challenging. This systematic review presents an inventory of TOM measures

Structural and functional brain correlates of theory of mind impairment post-stroke.

The ability to understand the mental states of others - also known as Theory of Mind (ToM) - is critical for normal social interactions. We combine behavioural probes with structural and functional brain imaging to provide the first comprehensive analysis of ToM deficits following stroke using the Reading the Mind in the Eyes Test (RMET). First, fMRI was used to identify the functional brain network involved in a non-clinical cohort. Results indicated that, relative to a control task, the RMET increased activity in a widespread functional bilateral network comprising frontal and temporo-pariet

Exploring the Components of Advanced Theory of Mind in Autism Spectrum Disorder.

Performance of a group of 35 youth and adults with High-Functioning Autism (HFA) was compared with a typical developing (TD) group on three Advanced Theory of Mind tests. The distinction between the social-cognitive and social-perceptual components of Theory of Mind was also explored. The HFA group had more difficulties in all tasks. Performance on the two social-cognitive tests was highly correlated in the HFA group, but these were not related with the social-perceptual component. These results suggest that the youth with HFA have difficulties on all the components of social knowledge but may

Common and unique neural correlates of autobiographical memory and theory of mind.

There is an inconsistency regarding the relationship between thinking about personal past experiences during autobiographical memory (AM) and thinking about other people's mental states during theory of mind (ToM). Neuroimaging studies of AM and ToM consistently report overlap in the brain regions recruited. Lesion data, however, show that amnesic people with AM impairment can have intact ToM, suggesting that distinct neural mechanisms support these abilities [Rosenbaum, R. S., Stuss, D. T., Levine, B., & Tulving, E. Theory of mind is independent of episodic memory. Science, 318, 1257, 2007].

Theory of mind predicts conversational success in early right hemisphere stroke recovery.

Those living with right hemisphere damage (RHD) often struggle with engaging in aspects of conversation that require understanding what a speaker means. There is growing evidence that conversation relies on deducing the speaker's perspective, an ability known as theory of mind (ToM). However, whether conversation deficits after RHD relate to ToM deficits is unknown. Here, we related individual differences in conversational success to ToM in 33 speakers during the early stages of RHD (median 5 days post-stroke) in comparison to 16 age- and education-matched controls. We measured conversational

Theory-of-Mind Development in Young Deaf Children With Early Hearing Provisions.

Deaf and hard-of-hearing (DHH) children born to hearing parents have profound theory-of-mind (ToM) delays, yet little is known about how providing hearing assistance early in life, through cochlear implants and hearing aids, influences their ToM development. We thus addressed (a) whether young DHH children with early hearing provision developed ToM differently than older children did in previous research and (b) what ToM understandings characterize this understudied population. Findings from 84 three- to six-year-old DHH children primarily acquiring spoken language demonstrated that accumulate

Social anxiety is negatively associated with theory of mind and empathic accuracy.

Social anxiety interferes with accurate perceptions of others' thoughts and intentions, yet studies examining the association between social anxiety and social cognition have resulted in mixed findings. We examined the association between dimensional levels of social anxiety and assessments of lower- and higher-level social cognition. In Study 1 (n = 1485), we found that social anxiety was negatively related to accuracy in an assessment of higher-level social cognition (i.e., theory of mind) across all stimuli. However, no consistent association was found between social anxiety and accuracy in

Empathic skills and theory of mind in female adolescents with conduct disorder.

OBJECTIVE: Most studies on conduct disorder (CD) have focused on male adolescents, disregarding analysis of this psychopathology in women. The purpose of this study was to identify differences in empathy and theory of mind (ToM) in a group of adolescent women with CD and a control group. METHOD: Thirty-six adolescent women were selected from an initial sample of 239 adolescents (CD group = 18, control group = 18). Empathy and ToM were evaluated through objective instruments. Mean comparisons and multivariate analysis were performed to ascertain differences between cases and controls and to pr

Theory of mind in spina bifida: Relationship with intellectual and executive functioning.

This article investigates emotion recognition ability, a central aspect of Theory of Mind (ToM), in a group of individuals with spina bifida myelomeningocele (SBM) experiencing executive function deficits, and examine associations between emotion recognition, and intellectual and executive functioning. A total of 38 adult subjects with SBM were included in this study, participating in a randomized controlled trial evaluating the effects of a cognitive rehabilitation intervention for executive dysfunction. Reading the Mind in the Eyes Test (RMET) was used as a measure of emotion recognition, an

Picture sequencing task performance indicates theory of mind deficit in bipolar disorder.

BACKGROUND: This paper reports the performance of DSM-IV-TR diagnosed bipolar disorder (BD) patients on a well-recognised measure of theory of mind (ToM) that commonly elicits group-related differences in schizophrenia research. METHODS: Forty-nine BD patients and 49 age and gender matched controls completed Langdon and Coltheart (1999)Picture Sequencing Task. RESULTS: Relative to controls, patients with BD performed significantly worse on the ToM relevant false-belief stories of the picture sequencing task, but not on the control stories requiring social script knowledge, executive control

Attributional style in healthy persons: its association with 'theory of mind' skills.

OBJECTIVE: Attributional style, especially external personal attribution bias, was found to play a pivotal role in clinical and non-clinical paranoia. The study of the relationship of the tendency to infer/perceive hostility and blame with theory of mind skills has significant theoretical importance as it may provide additional information on how persons process social situations. The aim of this study was whether hostility perception bias and blame bias might be associated with theory of mind skills, neurocognition and emotional factors in healthy persons. METHODS: Total 263 participants (13

Cognitive and affective Theory of Mind in mild to moderate Alzheimer's disease.

Theory of Mind (ToM) allows one's own and others' cognitive and emotional mental states to be inferred. Although many patients with Alzheimer's disease (AD) display impaired social functioning as their disease progresses, very few studies have investigated ToM in AD. Those that have done so suggest that patients' ToM deficits are the consequence of other cognitive impairments. The aim of this study was thus to investigate changes in both the cognitive and the affective dimensions of ToM in AD, using tasks designed to circumvent the patients' comprehension difficulties. Sixteen mild to moderate

Unique theory of mind differentiation in children with autism and asperger syndrome.

This study was designed to determine if ToM abilities of children with autism and Asperger syndrome differentiate into Intrapersonal ToM and Social ToM. A battery of Social and Intrapersonal ToM tasks was administered to 39 children with autism and 34 children with Asperger syndrome. For both groups of children, ToM differentiated and Intrapersonal ToM was stronger than Social ToM. This asymmetry was greater for children with autism, whose Social ToM was especially weak. These results support a differentiated, as opposed to integrated, ToM. Moreover, the findings provide a more thorough unders

Theory of Mind in Schizophrenia and Asperger's Syndrome: Relationship with Negative Symptoms.

OBJECTIVE: Although previous studies have shown that the theory of mind (ToM) ability is impaired in Asperger's Syndrome (AS) and in schizophrenia, few controlled studies compared the ToM performance between the two disorders. Besides, the relationship between the degree of ToM impairment and symptom dimensions is unclear, and presence of ToM impairment in remitted patients with schizophrenia is controversial. Here, we tested the hypothesis that schizophrenia patients with prominent negative symptoms were closer to AS patients and different than schizophrenia patients without prominent negativ
