PURPOSE: Perioperative hypothermia, a common complication of general anesthesia, is associated with adverse outcomes. While active warming methods are recommended, the effectiveness of circulating-water mattresses during ophthalmic surgeries remains understudied. This randomized controlled trial assessed whether a circulating-water mattress combined with a cotton quilt (Group W) was superior to a cotton quilt alone (Group C) in maintaining patient body temperature during ophthalmic day-case surgery.
PATIENTS AND METHODS: Group W patients (n=39) used a preheated circulating-water mattress (38°

PURPOSE: Keeping warm is important for patients undergoing an operation because intraoperative or postoperative hypothermia may result in complications and mortality. In addition, patients undergoing an operation could have higher levels of anxiety, and keeping them warm may be helpful for anxiety reduction. This study examined if using a forced-air warming blanket from the intraoperative to postoperative period could help reduce anxiety, improve thermal comfort, and maintain core body temperatures for patients undergoing an abdominal operation.
DESIGN: A quasi-experimental study.
METHODS: T

Open layout dental clinics represent a typical medical environment characterized by high bioaerosol exposure risk and stringent thermal comfort requirements. Optimization of conventional air-conditioning airflow patterns often fails to simultaneously control thermal comfort and infection risk. Moreover, existing studies have largely overlooked surface contact infection caused by bioaerosol deposition. This study proposes a decoupled synergistic optimization strategy for indoor thermal comfort and airborne infection risk, based on the integration of airflow pattern, physical barrier and air pur

Single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWCNTs) and phosphorylated nanocellulose fibrils (PCNFs) were used as functional screen-print coatings on flame-retardant (FR) fabric, to improve its thermal resistance and thermophysiological comfort (wetting, water vapour and heat transmission) properties, while inducing it with electrical conductivity and UV protection. The effect of PCNF printing, followed by applying a hydrophobic polyacrylate (AP), on the same (back/B, turned outwards) or other (front/F, turned towards skin) side of the fabric, with and without the addition of 0.1-0.4 wt% SWCNTs, was studi

The thermal performance of a building envelope is closely related to its energy consumption. Merging industrial by-products like fly ash (FA) and rice husk ash (RHA) with phase change material (PCM) concrete unlocks a pathway to significantly enhanced thermal insulation properties for envelopes. This study investigated the effects of two different proportions of industrial by-products (5%-15% RHA and 10%-30% FA) on PCM concrete. The test results show that, at the same dosage, RHA is superior to FA in reducing thermal conductivity, especially at an incorporation rate of 15% RHA. Adding 15% RHA

China has achieved remarkable outcomes in high-speed rail construction; however, certain problems remain. High-speed railway station waiting halls are characterized by their large spans and dense passenger flows, leading to significant variations in the thermal environment and inadequate fulfillment of passengers' diverse comfort requirements. To address these issues, a field investigation was conducted at a typical high‑speed railway station in China's cold region, and a total of 207 valid questionnaires were collected. The analysis revealed that various operation and maintenance modes influe

BACKGROUND: Intraoperative hypothermia can lead to adverse clinical outcomes and avoidable financial and environmental costs. Environmentally preferable warming practices have been identified, including using reusable resistive blankets, extending the life cycle of forced air warming (FAW) garments and minimising flannel blanket use. This study integrates existing environmental data with best practices and quality improvement methodology to develop an optimised patient warming pathway (OPWP). This pathway was adapted to our local context, implemented and evaluated.
METHODS: The OPWP was devel

Extreme heat is a significant and growing health hazard in urban locations around the world, particularly in the Southeastern United States (U.S.). While most extreme heat research and interventions are focused on ambient outdoor conditions and the neighborhood environment, the indoor residential environment is where the most severe heat-health consequences occur. The aim of this study was to characterize the indoor thermal environments and identify predictors of high indoor temperatures for residents of heat-vulnerable neighborhoods within New Orleans, Louisiana, within the context of current

Outdoor thermal comfort in tropical mountain countries is shaped by air temperature, humidity, wind, solar radiation and topography, with elevation strongly controlling thermal stress (TS). This study evaluates how elevation modulates outdoor TS in Colombia and proposes an elevation-based thermal stress level (TSL) classification. Typical Meteorological Year (TMY) datasets from the National Solar Radiation Database (NSRDB) were used to compute four thermal indices: Universal Thermal Climate Index (UTCI), Effective Temperature (ETv), Thermo-Hygrometric Index (THI) and the national heat index (I

Workers engaged in outdoor activities are more vulnerable to heat stress and climate change due to direct exposure to environmental conditions. This study aims to preliminary evaluate the applicability of the Discomfort Index (DI)—an empirical index based on dry-bulb and dew point temperatures—in assessing heat stress in open-air environments across various climatic regions of Iran. We employed the De Martonne climatic classification, encompassing six distinct climates, and selected one representative station for each. Meteorological parameters, including minimum and maximum temperatures (°C)

People spend the majority of their lives within environments shaped by multiple interacting exposures, including thermal conditions, acoustic noise, lighting, and air quality, yet remain largely unaware of how these settings affect their comfort. Existing comfort research treats domains in isolation under controlled laboratory conditions, leaving real-world multi-domain effects on personal comfort underexplored. This paper proposes a unified Comfort Framework that fuses three practical data layers: macro-environmental conditions retrieved via location-based APIs, kinematic and micro-environmen

To enhance thermal comfort in compact kitchens of multi-family residential units, This article proves that simple mechanical ventilation has limited effectiveness and proposes an optimization strategy that integrates mechanical air supply and natural ventilation. First, a high-accuracy (> 88%) kitchen simulation model is established by fitting the kitchen temperature variation function and eliminating non-essential factors, providing a reliable theoretical foundation for ventilation optimization. Based on this model, the range hood structure is further optimized to improve pollutant capture pe

In light of the accelerating global trend of population ageing and the pressing need to reduce energy loads within the building sector, the design of housing for older adults from a sustainability perspective has emerged as a significant interdisciplinary challenge. However, existing literature has not systematically integrated two critical domains: the physiological and psychological needs of older adults and the architectural approaches that can effectively reduce energy consumption. This study aims to identify conceptual gaps and map the intellectual structure of this field through a scient

Urban expansion and increasing aerosol concentrations significantly alter land surface properties, influencing local climate systems through variations in land surface temperature (LST); however, the combined long-term effect of atmospheric and surface drivers remains unaddressed in semiarid Indian cities. This study examines a long-term spatio-temporal relationship between land use and land cover (LULC) changes, aerosol loading through aerosol optical depth (AOD), and LST trends in Ahmedabad to analyze the influence of changing land cover and aerosol load on land surface temperature-related u

Global warming is expected to alter indoor thermal environments and indoor air composition, yet the specific effects of these changes on learning and cognition remain insufficiently understood. In this climate chamber study, we examined the combined effects of experimentally elevated indoor CO₂ concentrations (500 and 5000 ppm, added from a gas cylinder under constant ventilation) and temperatures (22 °C and 28 °C) on cognitive-related outcomes. Twenty-four participants completed a within-subject protocol involving two neuropsychological tasks (Stroop and delayed-matching-to-sample), subjectiv

BACKGROUND: Newborn hypothermia is a condition that affects newborn survival if measures are not taken to prevent heat loss, especially in the first 28 days of life. Various studies have been conducted in this area, but there is a lack of information about how post-natal mothers specifically keep their newborns warm in a hospital setting. This study explored the preventive practices for newborn hypothermia among post-natal mothers in selected health facilities in the Kilimanjaro region.
METHOD: A qualitative descriptive study with a constructivist approach was conducted from April to June 202
