Electron beam dosimetry study of the digits in total body surface irradiation.

Total body surface electron beam therapy has been used for treatment of patients with mycosis fungoides. Using a 3 MeV electron beam, four fields and a moving couch technique, it was noted that patients developed marked erythema of the hands with bullous reaction along the lateral aspects of their fingers. Cylindrical phantoms were devised to study thermoluminescent dosimetry of the digits in electron beam therapy. At the lateral surface, dosage as high as 154% of the nominal dose was noted. However, dosage at 3 mm from the periphery was more homogeneous. To exploit the more even dosage at dep

The value of a tracer dose in predicting the kinetics of therapeutic doses of 131I in thyrotoxicosis.

The kinetics of tracer doses of 131I, assessed by measuring uptake and effective half-life, correlate well with the kinetics of therapy doses. The effective half-life was measured using thermoluminescent discs fixed to the patients' anterior neck surface. This method gives results comparable with those obtained using an uptake probe, and met with a good response by the patients. Using the kinetics of the tracer dose to assist prescription of radioiodine therapy would considerably reduce the spread of absorbed doses to the glands of a group of patients. The case for attempting more exact dosime

A thermoluminescent method for the evaluation of the 131I effective half-life in the thyroid when treating Graves' disease.

When planning treatment for Graves' disease with 131I, the effective half-life (Teff) should be estimated individually as it depends on biological characteristics such as iodine uptake and excretion, which differ from an individual to another (Berg et al. 1996). All the methods to quantify Teff described in the literature are quite complex and are difficult to be used in clinical routine. With the aim of optimizing this process, a simplified method is proposed here to evaluate Teff of 131I during treatment of Graves' disease. The present study suggests improving the method of determining Teff

Lighting up FLASH and beyond: TLD response across four orders of magnitude in proton dose rate.

BACKGROUND: Thermoluminescent dosimeters (TLDs) are widely used for proton therapy dosimetry and remote audits. Yet their response under pulsed delivery and the ultrahigh dose rates relevant to proton FLASH remains incompletely characterized. In proton beams, apparent dose-rate effects can be masked by changes in linear energy transfer (LET), so we designed measurements to separate true dose-rate dependence from LET-driven changes in TLD sensitivity. PURPOSE: To characterize TLD-100 (LiF:Mg,Ti) detector response to synchrotron-based proton beams across in-pulse dose rates spanning approximate

Influence of reference baselines on size-specific dose estimate (SSDE) in head CT examinations.

This study aimed to evaluate the influence of three reference baselines-specifically, supraorbitometal baseline (SOML), orbitometal baseline (OMBL), and Reid's baseline (RBL) on size-specific dose estimate (SSDE) in head computed tomography (CT), addressing limitations of conventional dose metrics that neglect baseline-dependent anatomical variations. Experiments were performed on a GE LightSpeed VCT scanner. The positioning of the head phantom corresponding to the SOML, OMBL, and RBL baselines was achieved by tilting the CT gantry and elevating the phantom. Using automatic tube current modula

A multicenter quantitative evaluation of Organ-specific radiation doses in head and neck CT: A dosimetric assessment using the Alderson Rando phantom.

This multicentre phantom-based study aimed to quantitatively assess organ-specific radiation doses during head and neck CT imaging using four CT scanner models: Siemens Somatom Definition AS+, Philips Ingenuity, and two Philips Incisive CT units. Thermoluminescence dosimeters (TLDs) were placed at 16 anatomically significant locations within an Alderson Rando® phantom to simulate realistic patient exposures. The highest absorbed dose was consistently measured in the superficial thyroid gland, reaching up to 30.41 ± 2.7 mSv, followed by the parotid glands, corneas, and spinal cord (C1-C2). Nota

Graphite foils as potential skin and epithelium dosimeters at therapeutic photon energies.

This work builds upon a prior study, examining the dosimetric utility of pencil lead and thin graphitic sheets, focusing upon the measurement of skin doses within the mammographic regime. In recognizing the near soft-tissue equivalence of graphite and the earlier-observed favourable thermoluminescence yield of thin sheets of graphite, this has led to present study of 50 μm thick graphite for parameters typical of external beam fractionated radiotherapy and skin dose evaluations. The graphite layers were annealed and then stacked to form an assembly of 0.5 mm nominal thickness. Using a 6 MV pho

AN IMPROVED METHOD FOR THE COMPUTERISED ANALYSIS OF GR-200A LiF:Mg,Cu,P TL SIGNALS.

The profile of the residual signals of LiF:Mg,Cu,P within the region of dosimetric interest was approximated by a cubic curve. The conventional analysis, the GCA developed in CIEMAT and the GCA developed in this laboratory were compared. For GCA developed in this laboratory, the 5 μGy test dose could be well measured even after measurement at 10 mGy and obviously at lower doses. The 20 μGy test dose could be well measured even after measurement at 50 mGy. The residual signals caused by previous irradiations in the case of using only reader anneal can be more effectively eliminated by GCA devel

Dosimetry studies on prototype 241Am sources for brachytherapy.

Sealed sources of 241Am emit primarily 60 keV photons which, because of multiple Compton scattering, produce dose distributions in water that are comparable to those from 226Ra or 137Cs. However, americium gamma rays can be shielded by thin layers of high atomic number materials since the half value layer thickness is only 1/8th of a mm of lead for americium gamma rays as compared to a value of 12 mm for 226Ra gamma rays. This may allow effective in vivo shielding of critical organs, for example; the bladder can be partially shielded by hypaque solution, and the rectum and sigmoid colon by bar

The applicability of the PTTL dose re-analysis method to the Harshaw LiF:Mg,Cu,P material.

The phototransferred thermoluminescence (PTTL) technique is applied to the Harshaw LiF:Mg,Cu,P material. It is demonstrated that using 254-nm UV light, dose levels as low as 0.2 mGy can be re-estimated. The PTTL efficiency was found to be ∼ 6 % in the dose range of 0.2 mGy-1 Gy, and it appears to be dose-independent. This implies that a simple calibration factor could be applied to the PTTL data for the re-estimation of dose levels. It was demonstrated that with a proper choice of the TL readout parameters, and the UV-light irradiation conditions, dose levels that are relevant to personal or e

Impact of thyroid gland shielding on radiation doses in dental cone beam computed tomography with small and medium fields of view.

OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this study was to evaluate the impact of thyroid gland shielding on radiation doses in dental cone beam computed tomography (CBCT) with small and medium fields of view (FOVs). STUDY DESIGN: Six CBCT protocols were investigated by exposing an adult anthropomorphic male phantom head without and with thyroid shielding, using 4 small (4 × 5 cm) and 2 medium (10 × 6 cm) FOVs. Twenty metal oxide semiconductor field-effect transistor dosimeters were placed in the phantom head to measure absorbed doses and calculate equivalent doses at 11 sites. Effective doses were calculat

New modified expressions for isothermal decay of Teflon embedded LiF:Mg,Cu,P and BaSO4:Eu phosphors.

This paper gives a full mathematical description of the kinetics expressions used in thermoluminescent isothermal decay experiments. The corresponding equations have been slightly modified considering the peak intensity at the maximum (I(M)) instead of the peak area Φ as proportional to absorbed dose, given normally in isothermal decay equations. The isothermal decay method was applied to the principal glow peaks of two different phosphors: LiF:Mg,Cu,P+PTFE, using first- and second-order kinetics, and BaSO(4):Eu+PTFE, using second-order kinetics.

Occupational exposure to ionizing radiation in diagnostic radiology in Côte d'Ivoire: an analysis based on spatial, collective, and individual dosimetric indicators (2018-2024).

This study presents a comprehensive assessment of occupational exposure to ionizing radiation in diagnostic radiology in Côte d'Ivoire over the period 2018-2024. Based on spatial, collective, and individual dosimetric indicators, this analysis aims to quantify exposure levels and evaluate the effectiveness of radiological protection measures implemented nationally. A total of 78 facilities were monitored, over 90% of which were located in urban areas, particularly in Abidjan, the economic capital, which alone accounted for nearly 70% of the distributed thermoluminescent dosemeters (TLDs). This

Comparison of linear energy transfer measurement for therapeutic carbon beam using CR-39 and TLD.

The measurement of linear energy transfer (LET) is crucial for the evaluation of the radiation effect in heavy ion therapy. As two detectors which are convenient to implant into the phantom, the performance of CR-39 and thermoluminescence detector (TLD) for LET measurement was compared by experiment and simulation in this study. The results confirmed the applicability of both detectors for LET measurements, but also revealed that the CR-39 detector would lead to potential overestimation of dose-averaged LET compared with the simulation by PHITS, while the TLD would have a large uncertainty mea

Reduction of radiation exposure by lead curtain shielding in dedicated extremity cone beam CT.

OBJECTIVE: A dedicated extremity cone beam CT (CBCT) was introduced recently, and is rapidly becoming an attractive modality for extremity imaging. This study aimed to evaluate the effectiveness of a curtain-shaped lead shielding in reducing the exposure of patients to scattered radiation in dedicated extremity CBCT. METHODS: A dedicated extremity CBCT scanner was used. The lead shielding curtain was 42 × 60 cm with 0.5-mm lead equivalent. Scattered radiation dose from CBCT was measured using thermoluminescence dosimetry chips at 20 points, at different distances and directions from the CT ga

Performance of pellets and composites of natural colourless topaz as radiation dosemeters.

The aim of the present work is to investigate the possibility of using the properties of the thermoluminescent emission (TL) of Brazilian natural topaz for dosimetric applications. Topaz is an aluminium fluorsilicate with general composition of Al2(SiO4)(F,OH)2 found with relative abundance in Brazil and in other parts of the world. Topaz from Santo Antonio do Jacinto, Minas Gerais. Brazil, was used in this work, in the form of pellets of topaz mixed with Teflon and composites made with topaz embedded in a glass matrix. The TL sensitivity was tested between 10(-4) and 10(4) Gy. The TL peak int

Photosensitization of malignant tumors.

Photodynamic therapy is a new, experimental method of treating malignant tumors by utilizing the relatively selective retention of the photosensitizer (hematoporphyrin derivative or dihematoporphyrin ether) and its ability to elicit an efficient photodynamic reaction upon activation with penetrating viable light. Application of this therapy to tumors in the bronchus, bladder, skin, and several other sites has demonstrated both safety and efficacy, even in advanced cases. Eradication of early stage tumors in the bronchus and bladder has been demonstrated. Selective retention of the photosensiti
