Oscillations in the dentate gyrus as a tool for the performance of the hippocampal functions: Healthy and epileptic brain.

The dentate gyrus (DG) is part of the hippocampal formation and is essential for important cognitive processes such as navigation and memory. The oscillatory activity of the DG network is believed to play a critical role in cognition. DG circuits generate theta, beta, and gamma rhythms, which participate in the specific information processing performed by DG neurons. In the temporal lobe epilepsy (TLE), cognitive abilities are impaired, which may be due to drastic alterations in the DG structure and network activity during epileptogenesis. The theta rhythm and theta coherence are especially vu

Elevating cerebellar theta oscillations boosts noninvasively induced motor plasticity.

Matching brain stimulation to the brain's natural rhythms can drive plasticity, yet this principle has rarely been tested in humans. We targeted the cerebellum, a key hub for motor coordination and learning, using a rhythm-tuned protocol that pairs theta-frequency transcranial alternating current stimulation with intermittent theta-burst stimulation to engage plasticity of cerebello-cortical circuits. In young healthy adults, this pairing enhanced fine motor control and hand dexterity, with gains closely tracking physiological markers of cerebellar-driven plasticity. Applying the same approach

Behavioral preference in sequential decision-making and its association with anxiety.

In daily life, people often make consecutive decisions before the ultimate goal is reached (i.e., sequential decision-making). However, this kind of decision-making has been largely overlooked in the literature. The current study investigated whether behavioral preference would change during sequential decisions, and the neural processes underlying the potential changes. For this purpose, we revised the classic balloon analogue risk task and recorded the electroencephalograph (EEG) signals associated with each step of decision-making. Independent component analysis performed on EEG data reveal

Evoked mid-frontal activity predicts cognitive dysfunction in Parkinson's disease.

BACKGROUND: Cognitive dysfunction is a major feature of Parkinson's disease (PD), but the pathophysiology remains unknown. One potential mechanism is abnormal low-frequency cortical rhythms which engage cognitive functions and are deficient in PD. We tested the hypothesis that mid-frontal delta/theta rhythms predict cognitive dysfunction in PD. METHOD: We recruited 100 patients with PD and 49 demographically similar control participants who completed a series of cognitive control tasks, including the Simon, oddball and interval-timing tasks. We focused on cue-evoked delta (1-4 Hz) and theta (

Activation of immobility-related hippocampal theta by cholinergic septohippocampal neurons during vestibular stimulation.

The vestibular system has been suggested to participate in spatial navigation, a function ascribed to the hippocampus. Vestibular stimulation during spatial navigation activates a hippocampal theta rhythm (4-10 Hz), which may enhance spatial processing and motor response. We hypothesize that a cholinergic, atropine-sensitive theta is generated during passive whole-body rotation in freely behaving rats. Hippocampal EEGs were recorded by implanted electrodes in CA1 while rats were rotated on a vertical axis, for a minute or longer, at different angular velocities. Rotation induced a continuous h

A systems model of alternating theta sweeps via firing rate adaptation.

Place and grid cells provide a neural system for self-location and tend to fire in sequences within each cycle of the hippocampal theta rhythm when rodents run on a linear track. These sequences correspond to the decoded location of the animal sweeping forward from its current location ("theta sweeps"). However, recent findings in open-field environments show alternating left-right theta sweeps and propose a circuit for their generation. Here, we present a computational model of this circuit, comprising theta-modulated head-direction cells, conjunctive grid × direction cells, and pure grid cel

Effects of early undernutrition on hippocampal development and function.

The possibility of a "hippocampal syndrome' was investigated in mature animals whose mothers had received a period of undernutrition during pregnancy and throughout lactation. Spontaneous alternation behaviour was abolished, and performance was found to be at chance level. Significant depletions in cell numbers were found throughout the hippocampal region; however, hippocampal theta rhythm remained and threshold levels for theta driving appeared normal. It was concluded that the behavioural differences observed did no arise from some simple deficit in the circuitry controlling hippocampal thet

Deep brain stimulation in the subthalamic nucleus for Parkinson's disease can restore dynamics of striatal networks.

Deep brain stimulation (DBS) of the subthalamic nucleus (STN) is highly effective in alleviating movement disability in patients with Parkinson’s disease (PD). However, its therapeutic mechanism of action is unknown. The healthy striatum exhibits rich dynamics resulting from an interaction of beta, gamma, and theta oscillations. These rhythms are essential to selection and execution of motor programs, and their loss or exaggeration due to dopamine (DA) depletion in PD is a major source of behavioral deficits. Restoring the natural rhythms may then be instrumental in the therapeutic action of D

Hippocampal electrical activity in the diabetes insipidus (Brattleboro) rat.

Theta rhythm was recorded from the hippocampus in normal male and female rats, and from female rats with homozygous alleles (HODI) and heterozygous alleles of diabetes insipidus (HEDI). Second-by-second spectral analysis of the complete period of rapid eye-movement sleep indicated that HODI and HEDI rats had the same theta frequency range as normals, but the mean theta frequency (6.4 cycles c/s) was lower than normal (6.8 c/s), mainly in having a smaller proportion of frequencies greater than or equal to 7.8 c/s. Pharmacological studies in the waking rat demonstrated a theta rhythm in the HODI

[Neurophysiological changes in hypertension detectable in an EEG analysis by the BERG-Fourier method].

Studies of the neurophysiological (bioelectrical) characteristics of the brain by Berg--Fourier method of analysis of EEG in 120 patients have established that by the quantitative parameters (magnitude of the total spectrum capacity) the majority of patients with the hypertensive disease differ from the control group and from patients with other forms of arterial hypertension. By the same criterion the patients with hypertensive disease running a crisis course significantly differed from those with hypertensive disease without crises. By visual characteristics of frequency spectra the patients

Organization of prefrontal network activity by respiration-related oscillations.

The medial prefrontal cortex (mPFC) integrates information from cortical and sub-cortical areas and contributes to the planning and initiation of behaviour. A potential mechanism for signal integration in the mPFC lies in the synchronization of neuronal discharges by theta (6-12 Hz) activity patterns. Here we show, using in vivo local field potential (LFP) and single-unit recordings from awake mice, that prominent oscillations in the sub-theta frequency band (1-5 Hz) emerge during awake immobility in the mPFC. These oscillation patterns are distinct from but phase-locked to hippocampal theta a

Septohippocampal GABAergic neurons mediate the altered behaviors induced by n-methyl-D-aspartate receptor antagonists.

We hypothesize that selective lesion of the septohippocampal GABAergic neurons suppresses the altered behaviors induced by an N-methyl-D-aspartate (NMDA) receptor antagonist, ketamine or MK-801. In addition, we hypothesize that septohippocampal GABAergic neurons generate an atropine-resistant theta rhythm that coexists with an atropine-sensitive theta rhythm in the hippocampus. Infusion of orexin-saporin (ore-SAP) into the medial septal area decreased parvalbumin-immunoreactive (GABAergic) neurons by ~80%, without significantly affecting choline-acetyltransferase-immunoreactive (cholinergic) n

Modulation of human frontal midline theta by neurofeedback: A systematic review and quantitative meta-analysis.

Human brain activity consists of different frequency bands associated with varying functions. Oscillatory activity of frontal brain regions in the theta range (4-8 Hz) is linked to cognitive processing and can be modulated by neurofeedback - a technique where participants receive real-time feedback about their brain activity and learn to modulate it. However, criticism of this technique evolved, and high heterogeneity of study designs complicates a valid evaluation of its effectiveness. This meta-analysis provides the first systematic overview over studies attempting to modulate frontal midlin

[Bioelectrical activity of the brain in paroxysmal and chronic forms of primary headache].

Eighty-three patients suffering from primary headache (HA) were studied. Migraine was diagnosed in 52 (migraine with aura--8, migraine without aura--30, transformed migraine--14) and headache of tension--in 31 patients. EEG was registered before treatment, using evaluation by methods of visual and spectral analyses. The EEGs of all the patients were characterized by diffuse bioelectrical activity changes. In patients with headache of tension (episodic and chronic), the reduction of alpha rhythm with simultaneous increase of other frequency bands were the main EEG features. In migraine with- an

Coherent theta activity in the medial and orbital frontal cortices encodes reward value.

This study examined how the medial frontal (MFC) and orbital frontal (OFC) cortices process reward information. We simultaneously recorded local field potentials in the two areas as rats consumed liquid sucrose rewards. Both areas exhibited a 4-8 Hz 'theta' rhythm that was phase-locked to the lick cycle. The rhythm tracked shifts in sucrose concentrations and fluid volumes, demonstrating that it is sensitive to differences in reward magnitude. The coupling between the rhythm and licking was stronger in MFC than OFC and varied with response vigor and absolute reward value in the MFC. Spectral a

Ischemic Stroke as a Complication of Varicella Zoster Encephalitis: A Case Report With Detailed EEG Discussion.

A 72-year-old man with varicella zoster virus (VZV) encephalitis complicated by an ischemic stroke in the right internal capsule, possibly due to secondary small-vessel vasculopathy, is described in this case report. The focus of this article is on the electroencephalogram (EEG) description of varicella zoster encephalitis and secondary vasculopathy because EEG descriptions are scarce in the literature and detailed descriptions are lacking. In this patient's EEG, right temporal theta waves were found in combination with a mild slowing of the background rhythm to 7.5 to 8 Hz in the acute stage

Resting state cortical electroencephalographic rhythms in covert hepatic encephalopathy and Alzheimer's disease.

Patients suffering from prodromal (i.e., amnestic mild cognitive impairment, aMCI) and overt Alzheimer's disease (AD) show abnormal cortical sources of resting state electroencephalographic (EEG) rhythms. Here we tested the hypothesis that these sources show extensive abnormalities in liver cirrhosis (LC) patients with a cognitive impairment due to covert and diffuse hepatic encephalopathy (CHE). EEG activity was recorded in 64 LC (including 21 CHE), 21 aMCI, 21 AD, and 21 cognitively intact (Nold) subjects. Transcranial alternating current stimulation in the theta band but not in the delta band modulates the comprehension of naturalistic speech in noise.

Auditory cortical activity entrains to speech rhythms and has been proposed as a mechanism for online speech processing. In particular, neural activity in the theta frequency band (4-8 Hz) tracks the onset of syllables which may aid the parsing of a speech stream. Similarly, cortical activity in the delta band (1-4 Hz) entrains to the onset of words in natural speech and has been found to encode both syntactic as well as semantic information. Such neural entrainment to speech rhythms is not merely an epiphenomenon of other neural processes, but plays a functional role in speech processing: m
