Enhanced deep nitrogen removal from low C/N wastewater via manganese-catalyzed iron-carbon micro-electrolysis coupled biological system: performance, mechanism, and microbial adaptability.

Efficient nitrate removal from low carbon-to-nitrogen (C/N) wastewater remains challenging due to the scarcity of electron donors in conventional biological denitrification. To address this limitation, a synergistic system coupling manganese-catalyzed iron-carbon micro-electrolysis (IMC-ME) with biological denitrification was developed. Under carbon-deficient conditions (C/N = 2), the coupled system achieved 90.1% nitrate removal and 77.2% total nitrogen (TN) removal, substantially outperforming the standalone biological process (49.4% TN removal). Mechanistically, manganese dioxide functioned

Simultaneous nitrogen and phosphorus removal from municipal wastewater by Fe(III)/Fe(II) cycling mediated partial-denitrification/anammox.

The efficient removal of nitrogen and phosphorus remains challenging for traditional wastewater treatment. In this study, the feasibility for enhancing the partial-denitrification and anammox process by Fe (III) reduction coupled to anammox and nitrate-dependent Fe (II) oxidation was explored using municipal wastewater. The nitrogen removal efficiency increased from 75.5 % to 83.0 % by adding Fe (III). Batch tests showed that NH4+-N was first oxidized to N2 or NO2--N by Fe (III), then NO3--N was reduced to NO2--N and N2 by Fe (II), and finally, NO2--N was utilized by anammox. Furthermore, the

Autotrophic denitrification supported by sphalerite and oyster shells: Chemical and microbiome analysis.

This research evaluated the metal-sulfide mineral, sphalerite, as an electron donor for autotrophic denitrification, with and without oyster shells (OS). Batch reactors containing sphalerite simultaneously removed NO3- and PO43- from groundwater. OS addition minimized NO2- accumulation and removed 100% PO43- in approximately half the time compared with sphalerite alone. Further investigation using domestic wastewater revealed that sphalerite and OS removed NO3- at a rate of 0.76 ± 0.36 mg NO3--N/(L · d), while maintaining consistent PO43- removal (∼97%) over 140 days. Increasing the sphalerite

Mechanistic insights into microbial and functional responses to norfloxacin in a thiosulfate-mediated denitrification granular sludge system.

Thiosulfate-driven denitrification granular sludge systems offer a promising strategy for treating wastewater with low carbon-to-nitrogen ratios. In this study, the system achieved 97.0 % nitrate removal and 50.2 % norfloxacin removal within a 1.5-hour hydraulic retention time, without nitrite accumulation. Norfloxacin was degraded via acetylation, defluorination, and quinoline ring cleavage, reducing the ecotoxicity of transformation products. Functional analysis revealed a 65.2 % increase in cytochrome P450 abundance, along with elevated expression of acetyltransferases, dehalogenases, and d

Calcium-modified siderite-driven optimization of sulfur autotrophic denitrification systems: Synergistic nitrogen/phosphorus removal and multidimensional mechanism insights.

Sulfur autotrophic denitrification (SAD) is a promising technology for secondary treatment. However, existing methods struggle with coordinating sulfur oxidation-acidification, limiting efficient nitrogen and phosphorus removal from medium to high- strength wastewater. This study proposes a calcium-modified siderite-sulfur autotrophic denitrification (SCAD) process. Through long-term (90 d) continuous-flow comparisons of SAD, sulfur-siderite denitrification, and SCAD, the study evaluates SCAD's advantages in N/P removal, sulfate suppression, and pH buffering. The Fe2+/Ca2+ slow-release propert

Advanced nitrate removal in sulfur autotrophic denitrification biofilter under dissolved oxygen shock and low temperature enhanced by boron oxide and magnesium oxide: Hydrogen sulfide accumulation and regulation.

Strengthening nitrate removal stability of sulfur autotrophic denitrification (SAD) under environmental stress is of great urgency. This study established a biofilter filled with S0-based filter material modified by boron oxide and magnesium oxide (FMSBMg). Hydrogen sulfide (H2S) accumulation reached 18.89 ± 4.51 mg/L and 7.28 ± 2.03 mg/L in summer and winter. Air and water backwash flow rates of 3 m3/h and 150 L/h could reduce H2S accumulation to below 0.16 mg/L under dissolved oxygen (DO) of 4.4 ± 0.1 mg/L 0.4 ± 0.1 mg/L B3+ and 15.9 ± 0.3 mg/L Mg2+ released from FMSBMg enhanced nitrate remo

Performance and functional flora of simultaneous nitrogen removal, desulfurization and electricity generation in sulfide autotrophic denitrification-anammox-MFC coupled system.

In this study, a novel SAD-anammox-MFC coupled system was constructed for simultaneous nitrogen removal, desulfurization, and electricity generation. The optimal total nitrogen (TN) removal efficiency of 82.1% was achieved under the following conditions: a sludge inoculation ratio (SADB:AnAOB) of 1:2, external resistance of 500 Ω, influent sulfide concentration of 300 mg S/L, and hydraulic retention time (HRT) of 60 h. The maximum power density (1406.25 mW/m3) occurred at 300 mg S/L and an HRT of 24 h. A longer HRT promoted complete sulfide oxidation and allowed anammox to become the dominant

Efficiently intensified nitrogen transformation in electrolysis-integrated constructed wetlands: Comparative performance and mechanism.

This study developed constructed wetlands (CWs) with direct current (DC) electrolysis and iron-carbon (IC) microelectrolysis. Ammonium removal was more significantly enhanced with IC by 12.7-27.3 %, while the promotion of DC only existed with lower voltage. DC electrolysis continuously promoted nitrate conversion by 5.7-13.3 % compared to the control. Total nitrogen removal was 75.0-92.7 % and 85.4-93.4 % with DC and IC electrolysis, respectively limited by ammonium and nitrite accumulation. Bioelectrolysis enriched nitrifying bacteria such as Ellin6067, Nitrospira, and Nitrosomonas. Moreover,

A biological strategy for sulfide control in sewers: Removing sulfide by sulfur-oxidizing bacteria.

Sulfide produced from sewers is considered one of the dominant threats to public health and sewer lifespan due to its toxicity and corrosiveness. In this study, we developed an environmentally friendly strategy for gaseous sulfide control by enriching indigenous sulfur-oxidizing bacteria (SOB) from sewer sediment. Ceramics acted as bio-carriers for immobilizing SOB for practical use in a lab-scale sewer reactor. 16 S rRNA gene sequences revealed that the SOB consortium was successfully enriched, with Thiobacillus, Pseudomonas, and Alcaligenes occupying a dominant abundance of 64.7% in the micr

Microbial community structure and function in response to the shift of sulfide/nitrate loading ratio during the denitrifying sulfide removal process.

Influence of acetate-C/NO3(-)-N/S(2-) ratio to the functional microbial community during the denitrifying sulfide removal process is poorly understood. Here, phylogenetic and functional bacterial community for elemental sulfur (S(0)) recovery and nitrate (NO3(-)) removal were investigated with the switched S(2-)/NO3(-) molar ratio ranged from 5/2 to 5/9. Optimized S(2-)/NO3(-) ratio was evaluated as 5/6, with the bacterial genera predominated with Thauera, Enterobacter, Thiobacillus and Stappia, and the sqr gene highly expressed. However, insufficient or high loading of acetate and NO3(-) resu

Mixotrophic denitrification of waste activated sludge fermentation liquid as an alternative carbon source for nitrogen removal: Reducing N2O emissions and costs.

Heterotrophic-sulfur autotrophic denitrification (HAD) has been proposed to be a prospective nitrogen removal process. In this work, the potential of fermentation liquid (FL) from waste-activated sludge (WAS) as the electron donor for denitrification in the HAD system was explored and compared with other conventional carbon sources. Results showed that when FL was used as a carbon source, over 99% of NO3--N was removed and its removal rate exceeded 14.00 mg N/g MLSS/h, which was significantly higher than that of methanol and propionic acid. The produced sulfate was below the limit value and th

Mixed sulfur-iron particles packed reactor for simultaneous advanced removal of nitrogen and phosphorus from secondary effluent.

A mixed sulfur-iron particles packed reactor (SFe reactor) was developed to simultaneously remove total nitrogen (TN) and total phosphorus (TP) of the secondary effluent from municipal wastewater treatment plants. Low effluent TN (<1.5 mg/L) and TP (<0.3 mg/L) concentrations were simultaneously obtained, and high TN removal rate [1.03 g N/(L·d)] and TP removal rate [0.29 g P/(L·d)] were achieved at the hydraulic retention time (HRT) of 0.13 h. Kinetic models describing denitrification were experimentally obtained, which predicted a higher denitrification rate [1.98 g N/(L·d)] of SFe reactor th

Simultaneous nitrate and phosphate removal based on thiosulfate-driven autotrophic denitrification biofilter filled with volcanic rock and sponge iron.

This study constructed two thiosulfate-driven autotrophic denitrification biofilters filled with volcanic rock (VR-BF), sponge iron and volcanic rock (SIVR-BF), respectively. The nitrate removal load (3200 g/m3/d) and efficiency (98 %) of SIVR-BF were higher than those of VR-BF. The removal of phosphate in SIVR-BF was mainly through forming FePO4 and Fe3(PO4)2(OH)2. Sulfur and iron cycles in SIVR-BF contributed to Fe (II)/Fe (III) electron shuttle, as well as S2-, S0, Sn2- electron buffer and energy storage, which improved nitrate removal and electron utilization.
