Conservative treatment of injuries of the thoracic and lumbar spine is indicated in stable fractures without or with an axis angle up to 25 degrees and in children fractures. Stable injuries are compression-wedge-fractures and burst fractures. Severe compression fractures with dorsal ligamentous injuries are regarded being conditional stable. Conservative treatment can be divided into 3 periods: lying period, rising period and stand-walk-sit period. Physiotherapy together with proper nursing is to avoid pulmonary and circulatory complications as well as to support motility of the intestinal tr

BACKGROUND: Percutaneous vertebroplasty (PVP) is a common treatment for osteoporotic vertebral compression fracture (OVCF). Perioperative bleeding is usually rare, so there are few reports of shock. However, we developed shock after treating a case of OVCF of the 5th thoracic vertebra with PVP.
CASE PRESENTATION: An 80 years old female patient received PVP due to OVCF of the 5th thoracic vertebra. The operation was successfully completed and the patient returned to the ward safely after the operation. At 90 min after operation, she developed shock, which was induced by subcutaneous hemorrhage

Sparganosis is a rare parasitic infection caused by plerocercoid tapeworm larvae. We described a case of a 27-year-old man presenting with numbness in both legs and masses in the right lung and spine, initially thought to have spinal metastasis from lung cancer. However, after pathological and parasitological examinations, the patient was found to have spinal sparganosis, likely due to a history of consuming raw frogs. The patient was successfully treated with praziquantel, resulting in the recovery of muscle strength in his legs. This case highlights the importance of considering spinal sparg

INTRODUCTION: One of the major disabling health conditions among elderly is back pain due to degenerative diseases. Less than 1% of spine disorders are caused by malignancies. Among the rare primary vertebral neoplasms the multiple myeloma and the plasmacytoma account for 26% of these cases.
PRESENTATION OF CASE: We are reporting a case of 64 year-old woman, who suffered from progressive upper back pain and intermittent neurological symptoms including lower limb weakness and voiding disorder under axial loading. Her medical history includes a Lynch syndrome (LS). Computed tomography (CT) and

Pigmented villonodular synovitis (PVNS) is a proliferative benign lesion originating from the synovium and commonly affects large joints of the extremities. PVNS can arise from any synovium in the whole body and rarely affects the zygapophyseal joints of the spine. Spinal PVNS is diagnosed mostly after resection of the mass. In our case we present a 22-year-old male patient showing progressive spastic paraparesis with insidious onset of back pain and difficulty of walking in a relatively short period of 1 month. After gross excision of the mass, diagnosis was established through histopathology

Schwannomas are common tumors of the nerve sheath cells. They present as well-circumscribed masses attached to the peripheral nerves, cranial nerves, or spinal nerve roots. Intraosseous localization of these tumors is rare. The presented case is a 55-year-old female patient, the very first case of intraosseous schwannoma of Th12 vertebra without spinal canal involvement. She was admitted with a progressive back pain and seldom pain and numbness in the right leg for 1 year. Preoperative findings on computed tomography and magnetic resonance images of the lesion resembled that of any primary tum

Plasma cell granulomas (inflammatory pseudotumors) frequently appear as localized benign tumors of the lung in patients under 30 years of age. We describe the case of a 54-year-old woman with a plasma cell granuloma originating in the left lower lobe of lung and extending into the posterior mediastinum with destruction of the T8 vertebral body and pedicle. Distinctive histologic features included granulomatous aggregation of mature plasma cells around small blood vessels and direct invasion of the posterior mediastinum with subsequent dense fibrosis and bony destruction. Immunohistochemical st

Pott's disease is a health problem in developing countries and its diagnosis in children is a challenge. Here we present the case of a two-year-old boy with Pott's disease involving T1 to T3 thoracic vertebrae. The clinical presentation was characterized by difficulty walking, fever, cough, and dyspnea. At physical examination, kyphosis and bony prominence were observed in the cervicodorsal area. A positive tuberculin test was obtained, and Mycobacterium tuberculosis was isolated via culture of the gastric aspiration sample. The spine MRI showed a chronic abscess, destruction of two vertebrae,

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the computed tomograph (CT) findings of IgG4-related disease (RD) involving soft tissue adjacent to thoracic vertebrae.
METHODS: The chest and abdomen CT findings of 22 cases of IgG4-RD proved by orbital pathology and/or laboratory examination were retrospectively reviewed. The CT findings of paravertebral soft tissue in posterior mediastinum and the corresponding follow-up after therapy were primarily observed.
RESULTS: Among them, there were 8 males and 2 females with an average age of 57.6 (42-70) years. CT showed diffuse thickening of soft tissue in thoracic parave

HYPOTHESIS: Fusing shorter than the last touched vertebra (LTV) is a safe approach in flexible main thoracic (MT) adolescent idiopathic scoliosis (AIS) curves.
METHODS: This was a prospective study on consecutive AIS patients surgically treated with selective fusion of the MT curve. Fusion-level selection was based on the fulcrum-bending radiograph method. Patients were grouped based on the position of the lowest instrumented vertebra as proximal to the LTV (proxLTV, n = 43), at the LTV (atLTV, n = 45), and distal to the LTV (distLTV, n = 21).
RESULTS: A total of 109 patients were included i

PURPOSE: Operative treatment of adult spinal deformity (ASD) has been shown to improve patient health-related quality of life (HRQOL). Selection of the uppermost instrumented vertebra (UIV) in either the upper thoracic (UT) or lower thoracic (LT) spine is a pivotal decision with effects on operative and postoperative outcomes. This review overviews the multifaceted decision-making process for UIV selection in ASD correction.
METHODS: PubMed was queried for articles using the keywords "uppermost instrumented vertebra", "upper thoracic", "lower thoracic", and "adult spinal deformity".
RESULTS:

OBJECTIVE: Surgical stabilization to treat fractures, luxations, and congenital malformations in the thoracic spine can be difficult due to its unique anatomy and surrounding structures. Our objective was to document the morphometrics of the thoracic vertebrae relating to an ideal trajectory for dorsolateral implant placement in a variety of dog sizes and to assess proximity to important adjacent critical anatomical structures using computed tomography (CT) studies.
STUDY DESIGN: Medical records for 30 dogs with thoracic CT were evaluated. Implantation corridor parameters for thoracic vertebr

PURPOSE: To investigate the relationship between abdominal chemoradiation (CRT) for locally advanced cancers and bone mineral density (BMD) reduction in the vertebral spine.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Data from 272 patients who underwent abdominal radiation therapy from January 1997 to May 2015 were retrospectively reviewed. Forty-two patients received computed tomography (CT) scans of the abdomen prior to initiation and at least twice after radiation therapy. Bone attenuation (in Hounsfield unit) (HU) measurements were collected for each vertebral level from T7 to L5 using sagittal CT images. Ra

BACKGROUND: The Wiltse approach has been extensively employed in thoracolumbar surgeries due to its minimal muscle damage. However, in the middle and lower thoracic spine, the conventional Wiltse approach necessitates the severance of the latissimus dorsi and trapezius muscles, potentially leading to muscular injury. Consequently, we propose a modified Wiltse approach for the middle and lower thoracic vertebrae, which may further mitigate muscular damage.
METHODS: From May 2018 to April 2022, 60 patients with spinal fractures in the middle and lower thoracic vertebrae (T5-12) were enrolled in

Recent technical and methodological advances have provided new insights into Neandertal thorax morphology, revealing significant differences compared to modern humans, both in terms of the individual elements (vertebrae, ribs, and sternum), and in the thorax as a whole. However, the thorax morphology of immature Neandertals remains poorly understood, due to the limited and fragmentary fossil record. The Roc de Marsal (RdM) infant is one of the few cases in which the vertebrae and ribs are both relatively well preserved. Previous research has characterised the ribs of the RdM individual as havi
