The Notch gene family encodes transmembrane proteins that have been implicated in control of diverse cellular differentiation events in the fly, frog, and mouse. Mammalian Notch1 is expressed at high levels in thymus and is mutated in a subset of human T-cell acute lymphoblastic neoplasms, suggesting a role in T-cell differentiation. To investigate the patterns of expression of NOTCH1 protein in thymocytes of the developing and mature thymus, antibodies raised against NOTCH1 were used to perform immunohistochemical and flow cytometric analyses. Strong staining for NOTCH1 within the fetal murin

Pleomorphic undifferentiated sarcoma (PUS) of the mediastinal thymus is a rare type of cancer. In the present case report, a 67-year-old female patient presenting a mediastinal mass for >1 year was assessed for clinical characteristics, histopathological, immunohistochemical expression and gene mutation using fluorescence in situ hybridization (FISH), and relevant literature was reviewed. Histological analysis revealed nodular changes of different sizes in the thymus, which consisted of a mixture of pleomorphic and spindle cells. The pleomorphic cells with distinct atypia were giant cells and

Myoid cells have been described in the thymus in association with a variety of benign and malignant conditions. The presence of a benign rhabdomyomatous component in a malignant primary thymic epithelial neoplasm, however, is extremely rare. A case of poorly differentiated carcinoma of the thymus arising in the posterior mediastinum containing a prominent rhabdomyomatous component is described. The patient, a 70-year-old woman, was seen for a large posterior mediastinal mass. An open chest biopsy revealed an extensively necrotic tumor composed of islands of atypical cells with vesicular nuclei

BACKGROUND: Neuroendocrine tumors of the thymus are rare neoplasms. Four patients with this tumor who underwent multimodality treatment are presented and the literature is briefly reviewed.
METHODS: The medical records of all patients treated for neuroendocrine tumors of the thymus from 1979 to 2002 were reviewed. Tumors were classified using a slight modification of the World Health Organization criteria.
RESULTS: The patients' median age was 38 years. All patients underwent extensive excision of the tumor. Histological diagnosis was atypical carcinoid (2), typical carcinoid (1), and small

Thymuses, spleens, lymph nodes, tonsils and appendices from 621 autopsy cases were reviewed. The degree of atrophy of these organs might be classified into 3 grades. The main diagnoses of these cases involved more than 130 different diseases, which could be divided into 9 groups: infection, benign tumor, malignant tumor, deformity, amniotic fluid aspiration, fungal infection, autoimmune disease and hemorrhage, etc. Cases of infection with a course less than 5 days showed mild atrophy of the thymus and those cases with a longer course might show moderate or severe degree of atrophy. Cases of be

We provide a case report of two thyroid nodules in an 8-year-old girl, which revealed malignant ultrasonographic findings and which were confirmed as ectopic thymic tissue by total thyroidectomy. The ultrasound presentations of intrathyroidal thymus glands were similar to those of the malignant thyroid nodules. In addition, in this case, there were two ectopic thymus lesions in the thyroid gland, which undoubtedly increased the difficulty of diagnosis. The occurrence of multiple ectopic thymic lesions in the thyroid gland was different from previous reports. Therefore, clinicians should take i

A juvenile female loggerhead sea turtle (Caretta caretta) stranded in Gran Canaria was submitted for necropsy. The turtle had exhibited anorexia and lethargy for 2 weeks prior to its death. At necropsy, the thymus was enlarged by two white and firm nodules. White nodules similar to those in thymus were observed in the plastron, thyroid gland, heart, aorta, left lung, spleen, liver, kidneys, stomach, and small intestine. Histopathology revealed a neoplastic proliferation of round cells identified as lymphoid cells. Ultrastructurally, the neoplastic cells were consistent with lymphoblastic cells

Thymic carcinoma is a relatively rare neoplasm. Current incidence is difficult to assess. There is some controversy regarding its definition and its diagnostic criteria. We report a case of epidermoid carcinoma in a 48-year-old man located in the thymus area of the anterior mediastinum. Clinicopathological features and prognosis are reviewed.

Carcinoma showing thymus-like differentiation (CASTLE) is a rare intrathyroidal neoplasm, probably arising from ectopic thymus or branchial pouch remnants. The tumor was first reported by Miyauchi et al. [1].The clinical and pathological features of this tumor were classified by Chan et al. [2] into 4 groups: ectopic hamartomatous thymoma, ectopic cervical thymoma, spindle ephithelial tumor with thymic-like differentiation (SETTLE), and carcinoma showing thymus-like differentiation (CASTLE). Recently, CASTLE has been designated as an independent clinicopathologic entity of thyroid tumors in th

Primary carcinoid tumor of the thymus is a rare, slow-growing neoplasm occurring most commonly in middle-aged men. The usual clinical manifestations are those of a mediastinal mass, although in asymptomatic patients, the diagnosis may be suggested by a routine chest roentgenogram. Excision is the most common treatment. Because the disease may recur up to ten years after surgery, follow-up is important. The case reported here is of a 49-year-old man who was hospitalized for evaluation of a mediastinal mass first detected six years previously. When laboratory and other tests proved nondiagnostic

Three patients with carcinoid tumors of the anterior mediastinum are described. Study of these patients and an analysis of previously reported cases indicates that the thymus is the primary site of these tumors, which are probably related to the presence of Kulchitsky cells in normal thymus. These neoplasms differ clinically and anatomically from conventional thymomas. They occur predominantly in men, are not associated with myasthenia gravis or red-cell hypoplasia, and are more aggressive tumors than thymomas. Histologically, they are similar to carcinoid tumors of other organs and differ fro

The mediastinum is an anatomically defined space in which organs and major blood vessels reside with surrounding soft tissue elements. The thymus is an important organ in the mediastinum, and many of the masses encountered in the mediastinum are related to this organ. Most neoplasms diagnosed in the mediastinum are epithelial tumours (thymomas and thymic carcinomas), lymphomas or germ cell tumours. In contrast, soft tissue tumours of the mediastinum are rare. In 1963, Pachter and Lattes systematically reviewed soft tissue pathology of the mediastinum, covering the hitherto described [2, 226, 2

The objective of study was to investigate the origin and to classify the subtype of N-methyl-N-nitrosourea (MNU)-induced thymic lymphomas in mice. Histopathologic, immunohistochemical and ultrastructural studies were performed to analyze the pathological features of the neoplasms. The results showed that the thymus in all cases became totally replaced by sheets of cells of the lymphoid series. All the tumors coexpressed CD3 and TdT. Transmission electron microscopic study showed the plasma membranes of malignant lymphoma cells were smooth. The nuclear profiles were usually regular, with varyin

INTRODUCTION: There are few case reports of thymoma with a thymic cyst. Such an association renders it difficult for any pathologist to differentiate from other neoplasms, such as a cystic thymoma.
CASE PRESENTATION: A 50-year-old Berber woman from Morocco was admitted with a chronic cough of more than 10 years duration. Her medical history and physical examination were normal. Anterior chest radiography demonstrated a calcified opacity in her right anterior mediastinum. A chest-computed tomogram revealed a round cystic tumor, with significant calcification in her right anterior mediastinum.

Thyroid carcinoma showing thymus-like differentiation (CASTLE) is thought to originate from ectopic thymic tissue or remnants of the developing thymus within or adjacent to the thyroid. This case report describes a mass located on the left thyroid of a 28-year-old man. Fine-needle aspiration cytology revealed a number of lymphoid cells without atypia that were similar to those seen in a malignant lymphoma of the thyroid, and surgery was performed. Based on additional histopathological findings, the tumor was finally diagnosed as a CASTLE. It is difficult to diagnose this neoplasm using fine-ne

The thymus is a bilobed lymphoid organ the morphology of which varies considerably with age as a result of a process of fatty infiltration occurring after puberty. Although several diseases can arise in the thymic parenchyma, including germ cell and neuroendocrine tumours, primitive epithelial neoplasms (thymomas) are the most common neoplasms and account for almost 10% of mediastinal masses. Thymomas are usually benign but can be locally invasive. Up to 30% of patients with a thymoma have myasthenia gravis, which is more commonly associated with thymic hyperplasia. The latter results in a sym

Carcinoid of the thymus is a rare neoplasm. Differentiation from thymoma is important because they have entirely different prognosis. A patient in whom a 19 x 18 x 12 cm carcinoid tumor of the thymus was surgically removed is presented. The tumor metastasized to peritracheal and internal mammary nodes, and invaded the SVC, pleura, lung, and pericardium. This is apparently the largest reported tumor of its kind. Prior to induction of anesthesia cardiopulmonary bypass and rigid bronchoscopy were readily available. Awake intubation was utilized. Even though long-term prognosis is poor, an aggress

Carcinoma showing thymus-like differentiation (CASTLE), which emerges within the thyroid gland or the adjacent soft tissues of the neck, is a rare malignant neoplasm found globally. The occurrence of CASTLE in conjunction with papillary thyroid carcinoma is an even more infrequent phenomenon. The ensuing sections elaborate upon the clinical attributes characteristic of CASTLE.

Thymic carcinoma is a rare malignant neoplasm. We present a Japanese case of papillary carcinoma of thymus in a 64-year-old man that invaded into subcutaneous tissue penetrating the sternum. We describe the clinical and pathologic features of this extremely rare thymic epithelial tumor, with disease-free survival at three years of follow-up.
