The Technique of Thyroid Cartilage Scaffold Support Formation for Extrusion-Based Bioprinting.

During biofabrication, a tissue scaffold may require temporary support. The aim of this study was to develop an approach of human thyroid cartilage scaffold temporal support formation. The scaffold 3D-model was based on DICOM images. XY plane projections were used to form scaffold supporting part. To verify the technique, collagen hydrogel was chosen as the main scaffold component. Gelatin was applied for the supporting part. To test the applicability of the approach, a model of thyroid cartilage scaffold with the support was printed. The scaffold corresponded to a given model, although some d

Atypical Pharyngeal Pouch Arising Bilaterally between the Hyoid Bone and Thyroid Cartilage.

Introduction. Pharyngoesophageal diverticuli are a common cause of dysphagia; they are associated with various morbidities and a decreased quality of life. There are several different types of the diverticuli, and they are divided based on the anatomical location of origin relative to the cricopharyngeal muscle; these include Zenker's, Killian-Jamieson's, and Laimer's diverticula. The authors present a unique case of pharyngoesophageal diverticulum that has not been previously described. Case Presentation. A 65-year-old male presented with a 12-month history of dysphagia and odynophagia for so

Osteoblastoma of the thyroid cartilage treated with voice preserving laryngeal framework resection.

Osteoblastoma is a slow-growing, locally destructive benign bone neoplasm, rarely occurring in the laryngeal cartilage. We present the case of a professional voice user diagnosed with laryngeal osteoblastoma after microdirect laryngoscopy and endoscopic biopsy. Her treatment required a unique operation, with elements of partial laryngectomy and maintenance of vital endolaryngeal soft tissues, in order to optimize vocal outcome.

Bilateral dystrophic ossification of the thyroid cartilage appearing as symmetrical laryngeal masses.

Primary cartilaginous lesions of the larynx are relatively uncommon. We present a case of bilaterally pseudocystic lesion of the thyroid cartilage that demonstrated progressive calcification. Pathologic analysis showed features suggesting a dystrophic lesion with no evidence of malignancy. We hypothesize that repetitive microtrauma related to muscular overuse probably led to inflammatory changes at tendinous insertions on the laryngeal cartilage and resulted in dystrophic ossification of the laryngeal cartilage.

Tendinous insertions in the human thyroid cartilage plate: macroscopic and histologic studies.

The zones of tendinuous insertion and origin of the sternothyroid muscle, the thyrohyoid muscle, the inferior constrictor muscle of the pharynx and the external part of the cricothyroid muscle were studied in adult larynges by macroscopy and light microscopy. The sternothyroid muscle is inserted in the superior and inferior thyroid tubercula and also in a tendinous arch, which extends between the two tubercula. In contrast to the descriptions found in most textbooks, the sternothyroid muscle has no attachment to the oblique line. The thyrohyoid muscle and the thyropharyngeal part of the inferi

3D-printed EXOs/BMSCs composite hydrogel scaffolds for thyroid cartilage defect repair.

In cartilage tissue, the exchange of nutrients and metabolic waste products occur solely through diffusion within the extracellular matrix. Due to the avascular nature of cartilage, once it is damaged, its inherent regenerative capacity is limited. Laryngeal cartilage defects often result from surgical interventions, such as those performed for laryngeal tumors, traumatic injuries to the larynx, and congenital laryngeal deformities. Clinically, autologous cartilage or synthetic substitutes are commonly used for repairing and reconstructing laryngeal cartilage. However, these conventional appro

Unexpected metastasis of thyroid cartilage involvement from lung adenocarcinoma: A case report.

BACKGROUND: Thyroid cartilage noncontiguous metastatic involvement is an extremely rare entity due to the absence of vessels within the cartilaginous tissue. A literature review revealed that metastasis from lung cancer is even rarer. CASE SUMMARY: A 51-year-old male smoker presented with progressive, painful left upper neck lumps for 8 months, accompanied by 10 kg weight loss, poor appetite, and mentation. He had a 30-year history of chronic alcohol use. Following comprehensive imaging studies and pathological examinations, we have identified metastatic lung adenocarcinoma with widespread di

Asymptomatic Gouty Tophi in Thyroid Cartilage: A Case Report and Literature Review.

Gouty tophi is a disease characterized by the long-term deposition of monosodium urate crystals in joints or cartilages. The most commonly affected site is the first metatarsophalangeal joint, and gouty tophi in the head and neck region are relatively rare. This article reports a case involving an elderly male with asymptomatic gouty tophi in the thyroid cartilage. The patient had a history of gout for over 10 years and presented with a painless thyroid mass that had been present for at least 3 years. He had not received systemic treatment. Preoperative contrast-enhanced cervical CT results in

Thyroid cartilage infiltration in advanced laryngeal cancer: prognostic implications and predictive modelling.

OBJECTIVE: Detection of laryngeal cartilage invasion is of great importance in staging of laryngeal squamous cell carcinoma (LSCC). The role of prognosticators in locally advanced laryngeal cancer are still widely debated. This study aimed to assess the impact of volume of thyroid cartilage infiltration, as well as other histopathologic variables, on patient survival. MATERIALS AND METHODS: We retrospectively analysed 74 patients affected by pT4 LSCC and treated with total laryngectomy between 2005 and 2021 at the Department of Otorhinolaryngology - Head and Neck Surgery of the University of

An indolent course of multiple myeloma mimicking a solitary thyroid cartilage plasmacytoma.

Multiple myeloma, solitary plasmacytoma, and extramedullary plasmacytoma constitute a continuum of a disease spectrum, which is called plasma cell neoplasms. These three entities can not be differentiated from each other on a histological basis and, for this reason, clinical evaluation is important in their differential diagnoses. Differential diagnosis guides the proper planning of treatment and helps in estimation of survival. Multiple myeloma located within the larynx is very rare. Because of its rarity, any established diagnostic and treatment criteria do not exist. In this report, a case

Investigation of the Position and Angle of the Vocal Fold Projected onto the Thyroid Cartilage.

OBJECTIVE: To perform laryngeal framework surgery for unilateral vocal fold paralysis and obtain favorable voice improvement, it is necessary to accurately determine the vocal fold and arytenoid cartilage positions. Thus, the position and angle of the paralyzed vocal folds and arytenoid cartilage projected onto the affected thyroid plate were measured using computed tomography (CT) before and after surgery. METHODS: Forty-six male patients with thyroid cartilage ossification observed on preoperative CT and vocal fold paralysis were included. Using Adobe Illustrator®, the thyroid plate on the

Impingement of the Thyroid Cartilage on the Carotid Causing Clicking Larynx Syndrome and Stroke.

We present the case of a patient with a recent history of ischemic stroke who presented with clicking larynx syndrome, a condition in which clicking noises in the larynx can be provoked by movement of the head and neck. Diagnostic imaging revealed unusual development and posterior angulation of the superior horn of the thyroid cartilage that potentially was causing trauma to the left common carotid artery. We deduced that symptomatic impingement of the carotid artery by the thyroid cartilage was not only the cause of the patient's clicking larynx syndrome, but also suspected to be the cause of

The use of the inferior cornu of the thyroid cartilage in identifying the recurrent laryngeal nerve.

The inferior thyroid artery, traditionally used as a guide in identifying the recurrent laryngeal nerve, is not wholly reliable because of two factors which affect the constancy of the relation between nerve and artery. One is the variability of the anatomic pattern of tbe inferior thyroid artery, and the other is the occasional incidence of a nonrecurrent inferior laryngeal nerve. In a study of 500 recurrent laryngeal nerves, the inferior cornu of the thyroid cartilage was more reliable than the inferior thyroid artery in identifying the recurrent laryngeal nerve. The anatomic relation betwee

Postoperative Purulent Chondritis of Thyroid Cartilage in a Diabetic Patient: A Case Report.

Purulent chondritis of the thyroid cartilage is a rare affliction that is not frequently observed in patients undergoing laryngeal surgery. The formation of abscesses between the inner and outer perichondria can cause constriction of the laryngeal lumen, leading to hoarseness and difficulty breathing. This report details the case of a middle-aged diabetic woman who experienced swelling in the tissue of her laryngeal cavity and destruction of her thyroid cartilage plate after undergoing laryngectomy. The pathological examination revealed evidence of inflammation, and the patient was ultimately

[Impression of the thyroid cartilage lamina--differential diagnosis in hyperplasia of the ventricular fold].

Impression of the thyroid lamina is presented by means of CT examinations of the larynx and in correlation with the clinical features and with serial sections of the larynx in the horizontal plane. This anomaly of the thyroid lamina produces the laryngoscopic aspect of a hyperplastic false vocal cord. Measurements proved that the horizontal extension of the convex thyroid lamina is always longer than the lamina of the other side. The pathogenetic mechanism in the development of this anomaly lies--in our opinion--in the irregular increase in size that probably begins at the onset of puberty. Th
