Thyroid hormone metabolism and thyroid diseases in chronic renal failure.

Patients with ESRD have multiple alterations of thyroid hormone metabolism in the absence of concurrent thyroid disease. These may include elevated basal TSH values, which may transiently increase to greater than 10 mU/liter, blunted TSH response to TRH, diminished or absent TSH diurnal rhythm, altered TSH glycosylation, and impaired TSH and TRH clearance rates. In addition, serum total and free T3 and T4 values may be reduced, free rT3 levels are elevated while total values are normal, serum binding protein concentrations may be altered, and disease-specific inhibitors reduce serum T4 binding

Preliminary observation of thyroid function changes in subclinical thyroid diseases.

BACKGROUND: It is estimated that 1.95% and 5.55% of adults in China suffer from subclinical thyroid diseases, which is difficult to diagnose and treat. OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to explore the development and prognosis of subclinical thyroid diseases to provide a reference from our single center experience. METHODS: A total of 240 cases from April 2019 to August 2021 in the laboratory information system database of Huanghua Development Boai Hospital were retrospectively analyzed. Binary logistic regression was conducted to analyze odds ratio (OR) of subclinical thyroid disease types return

Thyroid morphology and function after surgical treatment of thyroid diseases.

In 1992 we performed a prospective study with 300 patients after thyroid resection. Indication for the operation was a benign nodular goiter in 280 cases, Graves' disease in 11 cases and a differentiated thyroid carcinoma in 9 cases. 269 patients (89.6%) returned for a follow-up visit which contained an ultrasound of the thyroid region and a determination of the serum thyrotropin concentration. Patients with less than 10 ml had a thyroxine replacement of 100 yg daily for six months. This therapy was discontinued for the next three months and they received their follow-up nine months after the

COVID-19 pandemic and thyroid diseases.

BACKGROUND: The COVID-19 pandemic has been associated with various autoimmune manifestations. Several studies have suggested a potential association between COVID-19 and thyroid diseases (TDs); however, findings remain inconclusive and are primarily based on relatively small studies. Population-level data examining the differential impact of the pandemic on specific thyroid conditions are scarce. OBJECTIVE: To examine the incidence patterns of Hashimoto's Thyroiditis (HT), Graves' Disease (GD), and Subacute Thyroiditis (SAT) during the COVID-19 pandemic compared to the pre-pandemic period. M

Thyroid diseases and female sexual dysfunctions.

INTRODUCTION: Female sexual dysfunctions (FSDs) have received little attention in the context of thyroid diseases, despite the high prevalence of both conditions. OBJECTIVES: This review aims to update and summarize the state of knowledge on the association between thyroid diseases and FSDs and to investigate the complex mechanisms through which thyroid hormone imbalance can impact female sexual health in the context of the biopsychosocial model. METHODS: A comprehensive literature search was performed through the PubMed, MEDLINE, and Scopus databases, using the following keywords: "female s

Natural Killer Cells and Thyroid Diseases.

Abnormal production of thyroid hormone is one of the common endocrine disorders, and thyroid hormone production declines with age. The aging process also negatively affects the immune system. An interaction between endocrine system and the immune system has been proposed to be bidirectional. Emerging evidence suggests an interaction between a lymphocyte population, called natural killer (NK) cells and thyroid gland function. Here, we review the relationship between NK cells and thyroid function and disease.

[Impact of thyroid diseases on bone].

Thyroid hormones are key regulators of skeletal development in childhood and bone homeostasis in adulthood, and thyroid diseases have been associated with increased osteoporotic fractures. Hypothyroidism in children leads to an impaired skeletal maturation and mineralization, but an adequate and timely substitution with thyroid hormones stimulates bone growth. Conversely, hyperthyroidism at a young age accelerates skeletal development, but may also cause short stature because of a premature fusion of the growth plates. Hypothyroidism in adults causes an increase in the duration of the remodeli

Autoimmune Abnormalities of Postpartum Thyroid Diseases.

The year following parturition is a critical time for the de novo appearance or exacerbation of autoimmune diseases, including autoimmune thyroid disease. The vast majority of postpartum thyroid disease consists of postpartum thyroiditis (PPT) and the minority by Graves' disease and non-autoimmune thyroiditis. PPT has a worldwide prevalence ranging from 1 to 22% and averaging 5% based on a review published in 2012. Several factors confer risk for the development of PPT. Typically, the clinical course of PPT is characterized by three phases: thyrotoxic, hypothyroid, and euthyroid phase. Approxi

Recent Advances in Autoimmune Thyroid Diseases.

Autoimmune thyroid disease (AITD) includes hyperthyroid Graves disease, hypothyroid autoimmune thyroiditis, and subtle subclinical thyroid dysfunctions. AITD is caused by interactions between genetic and environmental predisposing factors and results in autoimmune deterioration. Data on polymorphisms in the AITD susceptibility genes, related environmental factors, and dysregulation of autoimmune processes have accumulated over time. Over the last decade, there has been progress in the clinical field of AITD with respect to the available diagnostic and therapeutic methods as well as clinical co

[Management of thyroid diseases during pregnancy].

The management of thyroid disorders during pregnancy is one of the most frequently disputed problems in modern endocrinology. It is widely known that thyroid dysfunction may result in subfertility, and, if inadequately treated during pregnancy, may cause obstetrical complications and influence fetal development. The 2007 Endocrine Society Practice Guideline endorsed with the participation of the Latino America Thyroid Association, the American Thyroid Association, the Asia and Oceania Thyroid Association and the European Thyroid Association, greatly contributed towards uniformity of the manage

Thyroid diseases in children and adolescents.

BACKGROUND: Thyroid nodules are relatively rare in children and adolescents and have a prevalence between 0.2%-1.8%. They are more often malignant in children than in adults and thus an early diagnosis is extremely important. OBJECTIVE: The aim of the study was to analyze the group of pediatric patients with nodular thyroid diseases. METHODS: The authors processed the documentation of 66 pediatric patients with nodular thyroid disease who have been surgically treated at the Clinic of Otorhinolaryngology and Head and Neck Surgery, JFM CU and MFH in Martin during 2003-2007. RESULTS: Family hi

[Thyroid diseases in sub-Saharan Africa].

Thyroid gland diseases vary according to the environment. In sub-Saharan Africa, they are also influenced by population isolation and the absence of food self-sufficiency, both factors affecting the onset and persistence of iodine-deficiency goiters. More cosmopolitan diseases are now added to these thyroid disorders. Women are mainly affected (94.2%), most often with euthyroid goiters (54.7%), followed by Graves disease (13.1%), hypothyroidism (8.8%), thyroiditis (6.6%), toxic multinodular goiters (6.6 %) and unclassified goiters (10%) [Gabon]. [Surgical treatment of thyroid gland diseases].

Thyroid gland surgery is a treatment of choice for morphological changes of the gland, although patients with some functional problems, indicated from endocrynologist, underwent surgery. The goal is to analyze retrospectively patients with thyroid gland diseases according to incidence and surgery. We analyzed surgically treated patients with thyroid gland disease at ENT clinic in Sarajevo in last 5 years. There were 339 patients, 312 (92%) were patients with benign diseases, and 17 (8%) patients with malignant disease. Malignant diseases of thyroid gland were treated in two acts and benign for

[Autoimmune thyroid disease and associated diseases].

Autoimmune thyroid disease (ATD) is a multifactorial, genetic disease. It is the sequelae of the impaired immunoregulation, tolerance and poor recognition of one's own proteins, oligopolysaccharides and polypeptides, due to development of somatic lymphocyte mutations. It is manifested by different clinical and morphological entities, inter-related by etiopathogenetic association, i.e., all of them are caused by disorder of immune system regulation. Chronic autoimmune thyroidism (Thyreoiditis lymphocytaria Hashimoto, HT), as well as immunogenic hyperthyroidism (Morbus Graves Basedow, MGB) are f

Costimulatory molecules and autoimmune thyroid diseases.

At least two signals for proliferation and cytokine secretion by T-cells are required. The first signal is delivered through the interaction of the T-cell receptor with major histocompatibility complex (MHC) molecules expressed on the surface of antigen-presenting cells (APC). The second or costimulatory signal is delivered by cell surface molecules expressed by APC. The interaction of B7.1/B7.2 with CD28 provide the most potent costimulatory signal for T-cell activation. CD40 antigen and its ligand (CD40L) have been shown to play a major role in regulating both humoral and cellular immune res

[Upper airway obstruction in thyroid diseases].

INTRODUCTION: Respiratory symptoms (stridor) in thyroid diseases are rather common, but often overlooked, especially in older people in whom they may be misinterpreted as asthma or chronic bronchitis. MATERIAL AND METHODS: To assess the value of lung function tests for differential diagnosis we used these tests in 33 patients with upper airway obstruction caused by an enlargement of the thyroid gland. The clinical examination consisted of an evaluation of the respiration, examination of the movement of the vocal chords, thyroid parameters, Tc scintigraphy, ultrasound examination, and X-ray ex
