The feasibility of ultrasonographic measurement of thyroid gland area to common carotid artery (TG:CCA) was investigated. Twenty-one healthy, 12 hypothyroid and 18 non-thyroid illness (NTI) dogs were evaluated. The area of thyroid lobe and common carotid artery in right and left sides were measured using the same ultrasonographic images in transverse plane. The average of the right and left ratio was calculated as TG:CCA. The median TG:CCA of 21 healthy dogs was 1.53, and it did not correlate either body weight or age. The median TG:CCA of 12 hypothyroid dogs was 0.81, which was significantly

Outpatient or short-stay thyroid and parathyroid surgery is still uncommon in Germany. Although a substantial number of these operations are performed with low morbidity, nearly zero mortality, and short operation time, some potentially lethal complications, especially postoperative hemorrhage, are strong arguments against liberal shortening of hospital stay. Symptomatic hematomas after thyroid and parathyroid surgery are observed in about 1-2% of cases. They frequently occur during the first 8 h after operation (40%). However, two thirds of these major complications occur later, about 20% of

OBJECTIVE: To describe the phenomenon of parathyroid gland involvement by thyroid carcinoma and to explore its clinicopathologic significance.
DESIGN: We reviewed the clinicopathologic features and described the histopathologic characteristics of 20 cases of parathyroid involvement found in a series of 911 papillary thyroid carcinomas.
RESULTS: Parathyroid involvement occurred in 3 patterns: (1) direct invasion from the main tumor with an infiltrative growth, (2) invasion of the parathyroid gland with an expansive growth and formation of a pseudocapsule between the carcinoma and the parathyr

Autoimmune thyroiditis was induced in CBA/J mice by a newly developed method consisting of a combination of implantation of one whole syngeneic thyroid gland under the capsule of the kidney and subsequent injection of lipopolysaccharide (LPS) intravenously 6 hr after implantation. This procedure was repeated once, a week later. With this method the implanted thyroid gland, after becoming necrotic due to circulatory disturbance and regenerating, also developed definite thyroiditis, quite similar to that of the intact thyroid gland on Day 49. With respect to the H-2 haplotype of the mice, both i

Ectopic thyroid tissue (ETT) is a rare entity and a challenging differential diagnosis. This is a report of a case of a mediastinal mass that was found to be an ectopic mediastinal thyroid tissue, in a 77-year-old woman who was admitted to our hospital for breast cancer management. The mediastinal mass was identified in the postsurgical computed tomography (CT) scan of the chest and was suspected as mediastinal lymph node metastasis. A CT-guided percutaneous transthoracic punch biopsy (CT-TPB) proved to be an adequate diagnostic tool to exclude malignancy and provide a definite diagnosis of th

A rare case of a patients with sarcoidosis of the thyroid gland, who was preoperatively diagnosed as having thyroid carcinoma and who had no other clinical features of sarcoidosis, is reported. Thyroidectomy specimen revealed numerous noncaseating, epithelioid granulomas in the thyroid tissue. Mycobacteria, fungi and foreign body material were not identified. Similar granulomas were also found in the lymph nodes and muscular tissue adjacent to the thyroid gland and parathyroid gland After the diagnosis of sarcoidosis of the thyroid, systemic examination failed to reveal any involvement in othe

Encapsulated thyroid gland lesions, defined by complete or partial confinement within a fibrous capsule, are common findings in endocrine pathology but frequently pose diagnostic challenges. The primary difficulty lies in distinguishing benign, low-risk, and malignant neoplasms, particularly within the spectrum of follicular-patterned tumors. Accurate classification can be hindered by pitfalls such as differentiating true tumor capsule from peritumoral fibrosis, identifying capsular or vascular invasion versus reactive changes from preoperative fine-needle aspiration, and accounting for histol

Thyroid function undergoes significant alterations during pregnancy due to changes in hormone levels and higher metabolic demands. The thyroid gland in pregnancy enlarges by 10%; however, in iodine-deficient areas, this growth might reach 40%. Elevated levels of human chorionic gonadotropin (hCG) in early pregnancy leads to increased thyroid hormone production. While triiodothyronine (T3) and thyroid-stimulating hormone (TSH) do not cross the placenta, thyroxine (T4) does. Thyroid hormone demands peaks between weeks 16 and 20 of pregnancy and remains high until delivery. There is a rise in the

A rare case of thyroid foreign body is presented. The swallowed fish bone perforated the pharyngeal wall and migrated to the thyroid gland. The rarity of pathology caused diagnostic difficulties. Despite the correct diagnosis, wait-and-see tactics was initially chosen that delayed surgery and contributed to tissue inflammation. The stages of therapeutic and diagnostic process are analyzed. Endoscopy is not always effective, especially when foreign body migrates from pharyngeal lumen into soft tissues. Ultrasound and CT are necessary for topical diagnosis of migrated foreign body. These methods

A woman in her 70s with a history of chronic minocycline use presented with complaints of a non-tender posterior neck mass. A thyroid gland ultrasound showed a highly suspicious right thyroid nodule. A total thyroidectomy revealed darkened discolouration of the thyroid gland and tracheal cartilage. The pathology report showed dark brown granules representing melanin. Chronic minocycline usage is known to cause pigmentation of nails, teeth, bones and the thyroid gland. Our case highlights the importance of recognising that long-term use of minocycline can cause discolouration of the thyroid and

Autoimmune diseases of the thyroid gland are considered to be the most frequent cause of thyroid gland disorders. Autoimmune thyroid diseases consist of two subgroups: autoimmune thyroiditis (AIT) and Graves' disease. The AIT is the most common human autoimmune disease. Infiltration of the thyroid gland with cytotoxic T‑cells can lead to an initial thyrotoxicosis und during the course to hypothyroidism due to destruction of the thyroid gland. Substitution with Levothyroxine is indicated for manifest hypothyroidism and subclinical hypothyroidism with increased thyroid antibodies with the intent

This review article deals with the classification, clinical features and morphology of thyroiditis. These inflammatory diseases account for approximately 20 % of all thyroid diseases. The vast majority of cases of thyroiditis are of immunogenic origin while non-immunogenic thyroiditis (caused by pathogens or iatrogenic) is a rarity.

This review briefly summarizes the published data on relationships observed between melatonin - the main pineal hormone, and the thyroid gland. The prevailing part of the survey is devoted to thyroid growth processes and function. A large experimental evidence exists suggesting the inhibitory action of melatonin on thyroid growth and function; this effect has been revealed by using different experimental models: by chronic and short-term melatonin administration in vivo, by light restriction, which is known to increase the activity of the pineal gland, by pinealectomy, etc., as well as by empl

Malignant primary lymphoma of the thyroid gland is a rare disease generally occurring women in the 6(th) or 7(th) decade of life. The principal clinical sign is giant goiter rapidly leading to sings of compression, raising the question of differential diagnosis with anaplastic cancer. The radiological findings in our patient were suggestive of malignancy due to the locoregional invasion. Immunohistochemistry study of the surgical specimen was required to reach the definitive diagnosis of thyroid gland primary lymphoma. Diagnosis of malignant primary lymphoma of the thyroid gland made at the st

A five year old girl presented with a mid-line neck swelling. At operation, a multiloculated cyst was excised with a portion of hyoid bone and a suprahyoid gelatinous tract extending into the base of the tongue. Histology revealed a benign colloid cyst with associated thyroid tissue. Post-operative investigations indicated severe hypothyroidism. The cystic nature of the lesion was misleading at operation and pre-operative thyroid ultrasonography (US) is recommended for all patients with suspected thyroglossal tract cysts (TGC).

Thyroid hormones exercise a direct influence on the lung and myocardium. It has been found that at the heart of patients suffering from hyperthyroidism there is an increased production of contractile proteins and a redistribution of myosin Isoenzymes. Reduced efficiency results from the increased oxygen consumption and insufficient adaptation of the heartbeat to stress. Thyroid hormones are responsible for reducing arterial resistance; a higher incidence of supraventricular arrhythmias has been observed. In contrast, the cardiac changes in hypothyroidism are associated with an enhanced deposit

There are two basic mechanisms whereby chemicals produce thyroid gland neoplasia in rodents. The first involves chemicals that exert a direct carcinogenic effect in the thyroid gland and the other involves chemicals which, through a variety of mechanisms, disrupt thyroid function and produce thyroid gland neoplasia secondary to hormone imbalance. There are important species differences in thyroid gland physiology between rodents and humans which may account for a marked species difference in the inherent susceptibility for neoplasia secondary to hormone imbalance. Thus, it is important to cons
