Compression neuropathy of the common peroneal nerve (CPN) at the fibula head is a common condition, but it has not attracted attention in working environments. Here, we report a 38-year-old sewer pipe worker who presented with bilateral CPN palsy following 6h working with a squatting posture in a narrow sewer pipe. During the work, he could not stretch his legs sufficiently because of the confined space. His symptoms deteriorated with repetition of the same work for 1 week. Motor nerve conduction study showed conduction block at the fibula head of bilateral CPNs, compatible with compression ne

BACKGROUND: Many patients from Toroku, Japan, who have chronic arsenic exposure demonstrate whole-body sensory disturbance that is slightly more pronounced in the extremities. Although previous research in this population showed a mild peripheral neuropathy, it is unknown whether these patients have central nervous system impairment. To investigate the lesion sites underlying sensory disturbance related to chronic arsenic poisoning, we analyzed somatosensory evoked potentials (SEP).
METHODS: Clinical features, nerve conduction study results, and median and/or tibial SEP were analyzed in patie

BACKGROUND Kaposiform hemangioendothelioma is a rare locally aggressive vascular endothelial-derived spindle cells neoplasm. Herein, we report a rare case of bifocal tibial kaposiform hemangioendothelioma. CASE REPORT A 9-year-old female presented with a 2-year history of pain and swelling in the left leg. The patient had a high plasma level of the D-dimer and fibrinogen. Radiography revealed a centric lytic lesion on the left proximal tibial metaphysis and an eccentric lateral distal tibial metaphyseal. Histopathologic examination of the sample taken from the distal tibia revealed a dense spi

OBJECTIVE: To observe the feasibility of shear wave elastography (SWE) in the diagnosis of peripheral neuropathy in patients undergoing hemodialysis [chronic kidney disease stage 5 dialysis (CKD5D)].
METHODS: Forty patients with CKD5D were divided into a uremic peripheral neuropathy (UPN) group (n = 25) and a non-UPN group (n = 15) according to the results of a neuro-electrophysiological examination. Sixteen healthy control subjects were also enrolled in this study. Two-dimensional ultrasound examination was conducted, and SWE was then performed to measure Young's modulus of the tibial nerve.

We present an unusual case of tibial nerve compression caused by a true tibial posterior artery aneurysm. A 61-year-old man was admitted to the emergency department due to suspected muscle rupture. He had experienced a sudden, intense right calf pain and swelling that had begun during walking. He had a 6-month-long history of symptoms suggestive to the tibial nerve dysfunction and a month-long history of neurologic finding consistent with the right tibial nerve paresis. An examination of the legs revealed a painful mass in the posterior-medial compartment of the right calf. Emergency ultrasoun

Tarsal tunnel syndrome (TTS) is a relatively uncommon compression neuropathy caused by impingement of the tibial nerve or one of the terminal branches. The presence of accessory musculature at the posteromedial aspect of the ankle has been identified as a rare cause of this condition. Despite the rarity of this condition, it must be considered in patients with refractory symptoms consistent with tibial nerve dysfunction. The accurate diagnosis of this condition relies heavily on a detailed history and physical examination, adequate imaging read by both surgeon and trained musculoskeletal radio

Chronic administration of guanethidine to adult rats induces a selective autoimmune adrenergic neuropathy. Physiological and biochemical features of this disorder in the peripheral nervous system were explored in young adult Sprague-Dawley rats given daily intraperitoneal guanethidine monosulfate for 5 weeks. Control rats received daily saline injections. The guanethidine-treated animals gained less weight, had ptosis, and had a lower mean arterial blood pressure in the supine and upright tilted positions. Norepinephrine was depleted in the peroneal, sural, tibial, and vagal nerves, the nutrie

Diabetic neuropathy is a debilitating complication of type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM), largely driven by systemic inflammation and metabolic disturbances. This cross-sectional study assessed the relationship between interleukin-6 (IL-6), vitamin B12, lipid profile, and nerve conduction parameters in T2DM patients with and without neuropathy. Sixty participants were divided evenly into two groups: T2DM without neuropathy (control) and T2DM with confirmed neuropathy (case). Biochemical parameters measured included fasting and postprandial glucose, glycated hemoglobin (HbA1c), vitamin B12, IL-6,

A-waves are generally considered a nonspecific finding of unclear electrodiagnostic and clinical significance. We systematically identified A-waves during routine F-wave studies and defined them as supramaximally elicited reproducible intermediate to late responses that are clearly separate from the M-responses. In patients with A-waves, we noted electrophysiologic diagnoses, the nerve in which the A-wave was identified, the presence of A-waves in multiple nerves, and A-wave morphology. In 54 of 1,258 studies performed, A-waves were present in one or more nerves. Electrophysiologic diagnoses i

The morphology of carbon disulfide induced peripheral neuropathy was studied in rats exposed to three concentrations of carbon disulfide by inhalation for 90 days. Rats exposed to 800 ppm developed neurofilamentous axonal swellings in the distal portions of long fibers, including the dorsal ascending sensory and corticospinal tracts of the spinal cord. In peripheral nerve the predominant effect was seen at the level of the posterior tibial nerve. Teased fiber preparations of the muscular branch of the posterior tibial nerve showed numerous paranodal and internodal swellings as well as Walleria

This prospective study was undertaken to characterize better electrophysiologically the newly described clinical entity of "Early onset cerebellar ataxia with retained tendon reflexes (EOCA)" and compare it with Olivopontocerebellar atrophy (OPCA) and Friedreich's ataxia (FA). Concentric needle electromyography and motor (median, common peroneal and posterior tibial) and sensory (median, sural and posterior tibial) nerve conduction studies were carried out in 14 patients of EOCA. The results were compared with those of 10 and 16 patients of FA and OPCA respectively. All patients of EOCA had ei

Nerve sheath ganglion is a relatively rare clinical entity commonly found in the peroneal nerve in the lower limb or the ulnar nerve in the upper extremity. It is rarely found in the tibial nerve. The occurrence of a nerve sheath ganglion in a patient's tibial nerve has been identified. The initial presentation of the tumor mass has been very similar to that of a Baker's cyst, namely a soft undulating popliteal mass. Yet, the case also presented symptoms and signs of tibial nerve compressive neuropathy. We present here a rare case of nerve sheath ganglion of the tibial nerve. Clinical courses

This article provides an overview of the most common mononeuropathies. It includes a description of the neuroanatomy and function of each nerve which allows clinical localization of the lesion. It also describes the clinical presentation, findings in electrodiagnostic studies, updates in imaging including neuromuscular ultrasound and magnetic resonance neurography, and recommended treatment. While mononeuropathies may be part of polyneuropathy, this scenario is beyond the scope of this article. The most common mononeuropathy is carpal tunnel syndrome. Its prevalence in the United States is est

OBJECTIVES: MR neurography (MRN) is a modern technique for visualizing peripheral nerves and quantifying microstructural pathology, yet its use in pediatric populations remains largely unexplored. This study evaluates the applicability and diagnostic performance of MRN in children and adolescents with genetically confirmed long-chain 3-hydroxyacyl-CoA dehydrogenase deficiency (LCHADD) and mitochondrial trifunctional protein deficiency (MTPD), in which peripheral neuropathy is a known long-term complication.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: In a prospective cross-sectional study, 15 patients (LCHADD n =

PURPOSE: Chemotherapy-induced peripheral neuropathy (CIPN) is one of the major side effects and main reasons for affecting quality of life and dose reduction or even discontinuation of treatment in breast cancer patients. One of the most widely prescribed chemotherapies is the "taxanes." Considering that duloxetine has been used in treating neuropathies in recent years, this study aimed to investigate its effectiveness in preventing taxane-related neuropathy.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: This is a randomized controlled trial on 47 patients: 24 received a placebo and 23 received duloxetine at 30 mg d

The accessory soleus muscle is a rare anatomic variant, which presents as a mass in the posteromedial aspect of the ankle. This anomaly has been linked with compression neuropathy of the posterior tibial nerve. The authors present a case of tarsal tunnel syndrome in which the presence of an accessory soleus was unrecognized at the time of the original procedure, but was utilized during the revisional operation to provide safe coverage of the posterior tibial nerve.

Peripheral neuropathies are a frequent, but often underdiagnosed, cause of pain and functional impairment. The clinical symptoms can be subtle, and other neurologic or non neurologic clinical entities are often evoked. MRI and ultrasonography are the imaging modalities of choice for depicting nerves and assessing neuropathies. Common neuropathies in the knee area involve the saphenous, the tibial, the common peroneal and the sural nerves. The most frequent mechanisms of nerve injury in this area are nerve entrapment and nerve stretching. A perfect knowledge of the normal imaging anatomy is ess
