Methods currently used for the control of one-host ticks: their validity and proposals for future control strategies.

Available methods for the control of one-host ticks as well as their possible applications in control programmes are reviewed. The advantages and disadvantages of current methods (dipping vats, spray races, hand sprays) are compared to other chemical control methods (ear-tags, pour-ons, systemics, slow-release devices). Their integrated application with other technologies based on immunological, genetic or biological approaches is discussed. Because of the great diversity of geographic, climatic, infrastructural and scientific-technological developments in vast areas of the world, the author c

Methods currently used for the control of multi-host ticks: their validity and proposals for future control strategies.

Ticks have a world distribution and pest status reputation of hampering livestock production through transmission of fatal disease such as theileriosis, anaplasmosis, babesiosis, etc. and bites which cause blood loss, pain and other debilitating effects. Control of ticks is largely more effective on the host. The multi-host ticks spend most of the time off the host with short feeding periods of between four and ten days. Chemical control using dips or sprays has been the traditional method of attempting to kill these ticks during the infestation period. In many situations control, using acaric

Seasonal and circadian dynamics of Ageratum conyzoides essential oil and its application in tick control.

The aim of this study was to investigate the seasonal and circadian dynamics of the essential oil (EO) of Ageratum conyzoides (purple-inflorescence chemotype) and its relationship with acaricidal activity against Rhipicephalus microplus. Seasonal collections were performed monthly at 6 a.m. throughout 2023, while circadian profiles were obtained at 6, 9, and 12 a.m., and 3 and 6 p.m. in April (rainy season) and October (dry season). The EO was extracted by hydrodistillation, characterized by GC-MS, and evaluated using the larval immersion test. Yields ranged from 0.03% to 0.24% (v/w), with low

Tick-Borne Encephalitis sequelae at long-term follow-up: a self-reported case-control study.

BACKGROUND: Tick-borne encephalitis (TBE), caused by the TBE virus (TBEV), is a major neurotropic infection throughout Europe and Asia, with a considerable risk of neurological sequelae. Our aim was to study the symptoms in patients with TBE in Western Gotaland between 1997 and 2012 in the acute phase and at follow-up after 2-15 years (median: 5.5 years). METHODS: The medical records of 96 patients with TBE were studied. Phone-based interviews were held with 92 patients and 58 controls, matched by age, gender and residential area. The Encephalitis Support Group Questionnaire (ESGQ) 2000 was u

Tick-borne diseases of bovines in Pakistan: major scope for future research and improved control.

Ticks and tick-borne diseases (TBDs) affect the productivity of bovines in tropical and subtropical regions of the world, leading to a significant adverse impact on the livelihoods of resource-poor farming communities. Globally, four main TBDs, namely anaplasmosis, babesiosis, theileriosis, and cowdriosis (heartwater) affect bovines, and the former three are of major economic importance in bovines in Pakistan. Given that the livestock sector has become an integral part of Pakistan's economy and a large number of dairy cattle are being imported into the country, in order to meet an increasing d

The history of the cattle tick Boophilus microplus in Australia and achievements in its control.

For more than 100 years, tick fever and the cattle tick have caused tremendous financial loss to cattle producers around the world. Since Australia became infected with the disease and infested with its tick vector in the mid-19th century, a great deal of research effort has been directed towards their effective control by Australian farmers, administrators and scientists. Such research has yielded information which has facilitated the development of various control strategies that have equal application in other countries afflicted with the same problem. It has been demonstrated that integrat

A survey of cattle tick control practices in the eastern Cape Province of South Africa.

Current cattle tick control practices and producer attitudes towards tick control in the eastern Cape Province of South Africa are discussed. These were ascertained from answers to a questionnaire survey to which 31.2% of farmers responded. In general, producers favoured intensive tick control. Beef and dairy farmers had a definite preference for synthetic pyrethroid acaricides, the majority followed a 25 times p.a. treatment frequency and most changed acaricides because of price. Beef producers favoured pour-on application of acaricides while the majority of dairy producers utilized plunge di

Entomopathogenic Fungi as Alternatives to Chemical Acaricides: Challenges, Opportunities and Prospects for Sustainable Tick Control.

Entomopathogenic fungi (EPFs) can infect and kill a diverse range of arthropods, including ticks (Acari: Ixodidae) that can transmit various diseases to animals and humans. Consequently, the use of EPFs as a biocontrol method for managing tick populations has been explored as an alternative to chemical acaricides, which may have harmful effects on the environment and non-target species. This review summarizes studies conducted on EPFs for tick control between 1998 and 2024, identifying 9 different EPF species that have been used against 15 different species of ticks. One of the most well-known

Modeling platform to assess the effectiveness of single and integrated Ixodes scapularis tick control methods.

BACKGROUND: Lyme disease continues to expand in Canada and the USA and no single intervention is likely to curb the epidemic. METHODS: We propose a platform to quantitatively assess the effectiveness of a subset of Ixodes scapularis tick management approaches. The platform allows us to assess the impact of different control treatments, conducted either individually (single interventions) or in combination (combined efforts), with varying timings and durations. Interventions include three low environmental toxicity measures in differing combinations, namely reductions in white-tailed deer (Odo

Trial of a minimal-risk botanical compound to control the vector tick of Lyme disease.

We compared the application of IC2, a minimal-risk (25B) botanical compound containing 10% rosemary oil, with bifenthrin, a commonly used synthetic compound, and with water for the control of Ixodes scapularis Say (= Ixodes dammini Spielman, Clifford, Piesman & Corwin), on tick-infested grids in Maine, in an area where Lyme disease is established and other tick-borne diseases are emerging. High-pressure sprays of IC2, bifenthrin, and water were applied during the peak nymphal (July) and adult (October) seasons of the vector tick. No ticks could be dragged on the IC2 grids within 2 wk of the Ju

A ten-year review of commercial vaccine performance for control of tick infestations on cattle.

Ticks are important ectoparasites of domestic and wild animals, and tick infestations economically impact cattle production worldwide. Control of cattle tick infestations has been primarily by application of acaricides which has resulted in selection of resistant ticks and environmental pollution. Herein we discuss data from tick vaccine application in Australia, Cuba, Mexico and other Latin American countries. Commercial tick vaccines for cattle based on the Boophilus microplus Bm86 gut antigen have proven to be a feasible tick control method that offers a cost-effective, environmentally frie

Entomopathogenic nematodes as control agents of developmental stages of the black-legged tick, Ixodes scapularis.

Thirteen species or strains of entomopathogenic nematodes of the genera Steinernema and Heterorhabditis were tested in vitro against unfed and engorged larvae, nymphs, and adults of the black-legged tick, Ixodes scapularis. Nematodes were pathogenic to engorged female ticks, but not to unfed or engorged larvae, nymphs, males, and unfed females. Steinernema riobravis (355) and Heterorhabditis megidis (M145) killed ticks most rapidly, with mean day of death postinfection of 2.5 and 3.5 days, respectively. However, all nematode strains and species were lethal to engorged female ticks within 7.5 d

Questing for sustainable control of cattle ticks: bottlenecks in developing efficacious vaccines.

Naturally acquired immunity against cattle ticks, observed in certain breeds of cattle, indicates that development of vaccines to prevent infestations is feasible. This opinion article focuses on the knowledge needed to guide their development, formulation, and testing. It discusses the limitations of current experimental vaccines and tests used to evaluate them and points to the research needed to achieve a truly efficacious vaccine. It includes using better strategies to select antigens, not relying solely on indirect readouts of efficacy but rather elucidating the immune mechanisms responsi

Metarhizium anisopliae: current status and future in hard ticks control in Asia.

Ticks exert a significant economic impact on the livestock industry, particularly in Asian regions. Presently, chemical acaricides constitute the primary method employed to combat tick infestations in livestock, but their use carries adverse environmental consequences. Overreliance on acaricides has contaminated milk and meat products with chemical residues while fostering tick resistance to these agents due to improper and intensive application. Various alternative methods have been explored, including using vaccines to manage tick populations. However, the efficacy of these treatments varies

Molecular Basis of the pH-Controlled Maturation of the Tick-Borne Encephalitis Flavivirus.

Flaviviruses are enveloped viruses causing high public concerns. Their maturation spans several cellular compartments having different pH. Thus, complex control mechanisms are in place to avoid premature maturation. Here we report the dynamical behavior at neutral and acidic pH of the precursor of the membrane fusion protein E of tick-borne encephalitis, showing the different stabilizations of the E dimer and the role played by the small fusion-assisting protomer (pr). The comprehension, at atomic resolution, of the fine regulation of viral maturation will be fundamental to the development of

Immunological control of ticks through vaccination with Boophilus microplus gut antigens.

The control of tick infestations and the transmission of tick-borne diseases remain a challenge for the scientific community. Traditional control methods have been only partially successful. Recently, vaccination with recombinant Boophilus microplus gut antigens has been shown to control tick infestations. Our Bm86-containing vaccine formulation (Gavac) has been effective for the control of artificial infestations of B. annulatus, B. decoloratus, and chemically sensitive and resistant B. microplus strains from Australia, Africa, America, and Iran. Preliminary results with Hyalomma spp. and Rhi

Adaptation of Anaplasma phagocytophilum to the tick vector is controlled by the transcriptional regulator Tr1.

Rickettsial pathogens are strictly dependent on the cellular biology of their hosts for survival and replication. Predominantly transmitted by blood-feeding arthropods, these vector-borne pathogens are forced to adapt between the disparate environments of their mammalian host and arthropod vector. To achieve this, the Rickettsial bacteria Anaplasma phagocytophilum undergo extensive transcriptional reprogramming, with over 41% of its genes differentially transcribed between mammals and Ixodes scapularis ticks. How the bacterium orchestrates this dramatic transcriptional reprogramming is not und

TickBot: a novel robotic device for controlling tick populations in the natural environment.

A semi-autonomous 4-wheeled robot (TickBot) was fitted with a denim cloth treated with an acaricide (permethrin™) and tested for its ability to control ticks in a tick-infested natural environment in Portsmouth, Virginia. The robot's sensors detect a magnetic field signal from a guide wire encased in 80m polyethylene tubing, enabling the robot to follow the trails, open areas and other terrain where the tubing was located. To attract ticks to the treated area, CO2 was distributed through the same tubing, fitted with evenly spaced pores and flow control valves, which permitted uniform CO2 distr
